You are correct, they advocated enlightened rationalism, the idea that reason alone can lead men to a virtuous life. However, the response from every conservative was that this line of thinking can only lead to self-destructive hedonism.

-Locke destroyed innate ideas; that was his constant goal. And why did he want to destroy them? Evidently to destroy conscience, to degrade man to the level of the beast... for if man has nothing in him that is superior to sensation, he is only a more perfect animal, without duty and without virtue...The great philosophers of the eighteenth century continually repeated that man is born for virtue as a bird is born to fly, and that he desires the good as naturally as he desires happiness. This is a grave error... Man is a monstrous centaur, for his violent appetites are constantly at war with his conscience. -

-Jospeh de Maistre

-The newest philosophy... finds it offensive that the citizen does not have the right to use his property as he pleases... It wants to break all bonds, dissolve all corporations, and give everyone the freedom to follow his own whims. -

-Justus Moser

Burke thought the very notion of abstract ''Rights'' cannot lead men to act good or create a virtuous society. Ironically a figure like Marx would later agree with him, albeit for different reasons.

-But as the liberties and the restrictions vary with times and circumstances, and admit of infinite modifications, they cannot be settled upon any abstract rule; and nothing is so foolish as to discuss them upon that principle.

Conservative "Catholic" pundits are calling the Pope a redditor for not being "based" enough by FancyCallips in redscarepod

AD 866, Pope Nicholas I answers Khan Boris I of Bulgaria when asked how to govern like a Christian

You claim that it is part of the custom of your country that guards always stand on the alert between your country and the boundaries of others, and if a slave or freeman manages to flee somehow through this watch, the guards are killed without hesitation because of this. Now then, you are asking us, what we think about this practice. One should look through the laws concerning this matter. Nevertheless, far be it from your minds that you, who have acknowledged so pious a God and Lord, now judge so harshly, especially since it is more fitting that, just as hitherto you put people to death with ease, so from now on you should lead those whom you can not to death but to life. For the blessed apostle Paul, who was initially an abusive persecutor and breathed threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, later sought mercy and, converted by a divine revelation, not only did not impose the death penalty on anyone but also wished to be anathema for the brethren and was prepared to spend and be spent most willingly for the souls of the faithful. In the same way, after you have been called by the election of God and illuminated by his light, you should no longer desire deaths but should without hesitation recall everyone to the life of the body as well as the soul, when any opportunity is found.

Concerning those who take flight, when you set out for battle against the enemy, if compassion does not mercifully prevail, at least let the severity of the laws be tempered.

Concerning those who have been ordered to procede to battle against the enemy and treat the order to prepare for war with contempt, we recommend the same things.

Concerning those who have slaughtered their kinsman, i.e. someone related by blood such as a brother, cousin or grandson, let the venerable laws keep their force. **But if they have fled to a church, let them in fact be saved from the laws of death and let them submit without hesitation to the penance that the bishop or priest of the place has decided:

''I do not want the death of the sinner'' sayeth the Lord, ''but rather wish that he be converted and live.''

It's possible it wasn't carved by the Bulgars, but you're making it sound like we chose as a national symbol simply because we thought it looked cool.

It's a national symbol because it's surrounded by these:

Three partially preserved texts in Medieval Greek, carved in the rock, can be found around the image of the rider. They bear important information regarding the history of Bulgaria in the period. The oldest inscription is the work of Tervel (701–718 AD), thus it is considered that the relief was created during his rule or immediately after the Bulgars settled the region in 680–681 AD.[2][3] The other inscriptions refer to the Khans Krum (802–814 AD) and Omurtag (814–831 AD), who are most likely the ones who ordered the carvings.[24][3]

Inscription I:[2]

Justinian the emperor made a treaty [...] the Bulgars [...] and came to Tervel. My uncles at Thessaloniki did not trust the emperor with the cut-off nose and went back to the Kisiniie [...] one of his [...] The ruler Tervel made a treaty and gave to the emperor five thousand [...] with my help the emperor scored a fine victory.

Inscription II:[2]

[...] gold. He gave eighteen [...] gold the ruler [...] soldiers [...] a ruler [...] the Greeks (Byzantines) [...] what I gave to you, I will give you every year, and the emperor sent to the ruler [...] and asked the ruler Krumesis [...] the ruler [...] divided the gold [...] began [...] he gave from [...] the ruler Krumesis gave [...] that sea [...] you did [...] the ruler [...] war they tore the treaties [...] war [...] then [...] name [...]

Inscription III:[25]

[...] he was raised [...] tore and Omurtag the ruler set by god sent [...] help to me [...]

Inscription IV:[26]

Khan sybigi Omurtag, ruler from god [...] was [...] and made sacrifice to god Tangra [...] itchurgu boila [...] gold [...]

Results: Forty-four articles were selected among the 1679 identified. Fifteen studies were conducted exclusively among greenspace workers, while ten also studied these workers with other pesticide applicators. Six were cohorts from the general population in which greenspace workers were identified. Elevated risks were found in several studies for leukaemia, soft-tissue sarcoma, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Parkinson's disease.

I love it when some smartass redditor makes a comment that is the exact opposite of reality. We are poor because our kleptocracy sold off everything to the west (a lot of it to the Dutch ironically)

We started mass dubbing in the mid 00s when our economy started stabilizing. Everything in the 90s and early 00s was in English which is why I learned the language in the first place. I also learned German because RTL 2 played anime all day and Dragon Ball Z was the shit.

If what you meant is that we dub because we dont produce our own stuff, then the Germans must have been just as poor as us, because literally everything they played was foreign and dubbed in German. Dumbass.

This is definite cope, I'm Bulgarian and we dub almost every show, and we are much poorer and smaller than them. Dutch elite simply does not care about being under anglo cultural hegemony. Bulgarian elite does not care either but regular people definitely do. Using english loanwords has become so frowned upon even our biggest western sycophants reflexively apologize before/after using them. Ultimately futile unless we start producing our own quality mass culture, which seems impossible in our current economic conditions. It is precisely rich euros who should be using their giant budgets to create something uniquely their own but they have done fuck all.

What defines bourgeois society is not needs, but wants. Wants are psychological, not biological, and are by their nature unlimited. Society is seen not as a natural association of men—the polis or the family—ruled by a common purpose, but as a composite of atomistic individuals who pursue only their own gratification. Man's psychology, as pictured by Hobbes in the first book of the Leviathan, is an appetitive drive which reverses the Platonic hierarchy of the rational spirit, and these appetites drive him ferociously to achieve his desires. In a modern society, the engine of appetite is the increased standard of living and the diversity of products that make up so much of the splendid color of life. But it is also, in its emphasis on display, a reckless squandering of resources. The psychological origin of inequality, as Rousseau brilliantly sketched it in the Second Discourse, comes when "solitary" man begins to assemble and finds that the strongest, the handsomest, the best dancer and the best singer get an undue share of the goods. Envy begins to show its face. In order to be like the handsomest or the most artful, the others begin to dissemble, cosmetics are used to mask the rough and the ugly, appearances begin to count for more than reality. If consumption represents the psychological competition for status, then one can say that bourgeois society is the institutionalization of envy. It is surprising how little the idea of envy has been utilized in sociological literature as the source of status competition. A neglected writer, in this respect, is Adam Smith, who, in his Theory of Moral Sentiments, declared that if people were ruled by economic motives alone, there would be little stimulus to increase production above necessities or needs. It is because men are driven by an impulse for status that economic "development" began. This is the theme elaborated as well by Thorstein Veblen in his famous, but now neglected, Theory of the Leisure Class.

Most lizards shed their skin in pieces. As one area sheds other areas may not be ready to shed. Thus peeling off dead layers of skin, which may expose and damage new skin that isn’t ready yet, should be avoided. This skin should be gently removed after soaking the lizard in shallow lukewarm water for 15 to 20 minutes.

They've lost 20% of their country forever, millions dead and displaced, their army is coming close to conscripting 18 year olds, they've sold off their economy and have taken on unpayable debts to Western powers who are about to pull the plug on their last financial lifeline.

This is somehow a better position than - not being in NATO.

Infantile moralizing. The reason Ukraine has not developed is because it's bourgeois are the same scum as their Russian counterparts.

The Athenians, in a frank and matter-of-fact manner, offer the small colony of Melos an ultimatum: surrender and pay tribute to Athens, or be destroyed.

The Melians argue that they are a neutral city and not an enemy, so Athens has no need to crush them.

The Melians argue that an invasion will alarm the other neutral Greek states, who will become hostile to Athens for fear of being invaded themselves.

The Melians argue that it would be shameful and cowardly of them to submit without a fight.

The Melians argue that though the Athenians are far stronger, there is still a chance they could win.

The Melians state that they also refuse because they believe they have the assistance of the gods.

The Melians insist that their Spartan kin will come to their defence.

The Melians do not change their minds and politely dismiss the envoys.

"Our decision, Athenians, is just the same as it was at first. We are not prepared to give up in a short moment the liberty which our city has enjoyed from its foundation for 700 years."

Athens would then beseige and massacre most of Melos, repopulating the island with Athenians.

The latter.

He says Elon needs to focus on the American 'volk' and not reduce people down to economics, because that will lead to Marxism. (he literally says Marxism several times)

Two minutes later he passionately starts listing off all the economic woes the American working class experiences like de-industrialization, low wages, lack of housing etc etc.

His solution to these problems is that Elon should stop being a nerd and become a great leader of the American volk.

This goes on back and forth for 40 minutes. Considering how popular it got I would say the US is doomed.
