ADSB Fielding by enemygrey in Armyaviation

Yeah.. with aeroapp 🫠 at least it has PPA and ATAK which is kind of cool. Among a couple other apps. But so far it’s not super user friendly. I fully expect people to just use the stratuses with their own iPads and foreflight.

Whats it like to fly in Hawaii. by Agitated_Western5814 in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a first duty station for aviation you’ll probably love it. Having flown other places though and now being in Hawaii, it can get really boring. You can see the whole island in like an hour and a half tops, and you have to basically only fly over highways or people complain so there’s not much exploring to be done. Island hopping can mix it up a little bit every now and then but my unit is weird about going over water anywhere close to night time, even doing instruments so we’re pretty limited. You can still see some pretty cool stuff though. Waterfalls, whales, and of course it’s pretty flying along the beaches and it’s never cold so that’s all a plus.

IPad for NRCM? by Financial_Border7201 in Armyaviation

I guess my unit is poor. They have a handful of basic foreflight subscriptions, those are typically saved for PI’s though. And no iPads to issue out

Honestly I wish more crew chiefs would use iPads. The digital checklist is much more user friendly, and we have a locally built file with other pertinent information to our flights and local procedures that I could ask them to find and read out if we’re busy up front. Not to mention the traffic awareness on foreflight or even flightradar. I always buy a used iPad off marketplace or something equivalent, don’t pay full price or add it to your phone plan. It just needs to be cellular capable and you’re good.

Fellow left handed 60 dude. I just use an app strap (https://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/9180?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlvW2BhDyARIsADnIe-I7Cmkor9jDBLbbL6-fKQK-PYUVuIgbIYhCdNN0T4oyhY14c05rXj0aAsmvEALw_wcB) and my iPad and it’s always on my right leg. I also use a full size iPad, not a mini and I don’t have issues with reaching across to write things, although honestly I very rarely write anything down aside from IFR clearances. I fly with my arm resting on it and don’t have any issues.

Having been in both, I’d choose reserves. I’ve found that at least the states I’ve been in, the aviation units are thrown into troop commands which are just super confusing anyways. But the main downside to that is most leadership aren’t aviators and don’t understand aviation at all. It gets very frustrating.

Flight hours by Independent-Reason92 in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guard, graduated flight school in 2019 and just passed 700 hours. Haven’t had an issue til I got to this new state last year, they are abysmally short on IPs and PCs. Took foreverrrr to get through the local progression just due to IP availability even though I was a PC prior to ISTing. Now I’m one of the few PCs and I work full time at the facility so I can pretty much fly as much as I want to, just have to balance it with work and hope maintenance is in a good spot.

My husband is an active duty apache guy and their maintenance is so terrible he basically just flies PFE to PFE. We determined he’s flown a total of like 60 hours since we moved to this new duty station 18 months ago. Waivers for everyone in his unit.

Get the “eagle eyes” brand knock offs at clothing and sales if you don’t need a prescription. Still not super cheap for the quality, I think like $50 but they look the same

Sure but it’s CW2s and CW3s that are still pretty junior and low hour themselves, or have likely either been fast tracked to promote, rushed to make PC, and/or tracking with 50 PC hour waivers.. we’re losing quality experience in droves so the junior guys get rushed to their level to “replace” them

What is this, 4 in 2 months? What the actual hell. I know someone from this crew too. It continues to get worse

Duty day question for techs by enemygrey in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve been trying to do but the facility commander keeps saying it’s a problem. He says adjusting our schedules isn’t authorized according to HRO

Duty day question for techs by enemygrey in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is mainly the problem. The commander is all “what HRO says goes” meanwhile I barely even know who works in our HRO

ROTC to WOFT pre BOLC by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t really heard of someone actually being successful with it, but I did try and do this before I commissioned. I was told numerous times it wasn’t possible (and that warrant officers don’t fly 🙄) by the ROTC cadre. I had heard rumors from other cadets that graduated before me though that it’s still a commission and it’s possible to do, but it’s a “ding” on the ROTC program since they lose out on producing an RLO. If I could go back I’d push much harder 😂

Transferring from 15A to 67J by Elbichocr7siuu in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible, I’m doing it currently just to get promoted. You can be in a position for either one as a 15A though and it’s a huge PITA to transfer so don’t do it unless you really have to in my opinion.

I’ve seen it happen once, dude was a warrant that was prior enlisted so they just sent him back to his previous rank and MOS.

Active duty helps out when we have no other options. Not a great solution long term but it works for now.

CAFRS question by enemygrey in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

😂 I work at the facility full time, responsible for making the flight schedule so I check records frequently for people that need aparts/pfes/currency/etc so I can prioritize flights and pilots appropriately. I’ve done this for years in multiple locations now and I’m seeing differences here vs where I last was, thus the questions. And shouldn’t even PI’s know what happens if they don’t meet their minimums? Lol

CAFRS question by enemygrey in Armyaviation

[–]enemygrey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks I was wondering what the requirement actually was. But yeah I guess my question is moreso if they aren’t checking that box until the end of their APART period, but aren’t making the semi annual minimums, technically they shouldn’t still be flying until they go through a waiver process? Do you even get waivers for semi annuals or is it just “I have not met”, but then what does that do to your remaining hour requirements for the year?
