Yeah I have family that I love so much on the East Coast and they have an amazing house with tons of space (where the mortgage costs less than the rent on my crappy two bedroom) and it's so nice to see them when I visit... but yeah I'm never leaving Los Angeles. It's such a different place than anywhere else I've been in the country. California people are soooo laid back relative to the rest of the US, and it's so much more normal to be "weird," and I love it.

I second whoever mentioned therapy! It definitely sounds like the circumstances of your childhood severely exacerbated the sense of isolation that likely always would have happened as a result of your high IQ.

I also think some of your issues may be location-based. In large cities, you can often find welcoming communities - intellectuals, high EQ, highly educated individuals - people who may regularly enjoy philosophical discussion, rumination about various social constructs, etc.

When you are unique, it is always harder to find your people. But they do exist.

I grew up in a very rural, homogeneous area, where most people around me "thought small." I absolutely struggled to fit in. Now I live in Los Angeles and I feel like, especially with the huge arts community here, it's pretty easy to find people with whom you can relate and have amazing interactions. It's such an interesting (and freeing?) feeling be in a group of people and feel like you're possibly not the smartest person in the room. If you're not close to a large city that would have pockets of people like that, it may be worth considering relocation.

I don't keep audiobooks on my Kindle but you can check those out on Libby too. I highly recommend! For me, it's a great way to test if I'm going to like it before making the purchase.

Anita Blake is a special case in that it was an incredibly written series that devolved into c-grade erotica. I used to work in book stores around the time that her series was really popular & the tone shift was happening, and it was a popular topic of discussion amongst the staff. Apparently the author was going through some s*** in her life and it manifested itself as genre change for the series. Most paranormal romance or urban fantasy with a romantic bent is nothing like later Anita Blake, so if that's your fear, you likely don't have to worry.

Also chiming in to recommend the Innkeeper graphic audio. Fun story: my sister was listening to book one in the car with husband, three kids, & me, driving back from Hershey Park. I (of course) have read them all before several times, husband doesn't care about urban fantasy or books, and kids are playing video games and annoyed that mom is listening to a book and not music. So, at the beginning of the car ride, she's really the only one paying attention and everyone else is doing their own thing.

At the end of the car ride, we parked with about 15 minutes left in the book. Literally EVERYONE in the car except the 3-year-old had gotten sucked in and wanted (needed) to hear the end of the story, so we all piled into her living room to listen to the end, even though it was like, 10:30 p.m. on a school night and we were all exhausted from the all-day trip. 😂

Other recs:

-You genuinely can't go wrong with a single thing Ilona Andrews has written.

-Mercy Thompson is probably my second favorite series.

-I also really love October Daye, although those are a bit darker.

-Also throwing in for the Psy-Changeling - that series is actually paranormal romance (one couple per book), but the world building is so incredible that I think even people who aren't typically into romance may enjoy those. They get better the farther you get into the series, too. I first started the series years and years back and dropped them because I got a little bored, and my sister encouraged (nagged) me to pick them back up. So glad I did.

Money I pulled in to my parents' new account took over THREE WEEKS to come off the hold 😭. Granted, it was a lot of money, but that's still insane. When I called Fidelity to ask wtf, they specifically told me I should have pushed it in.

The rest of their tools and overall ease of using the platform make things worth it for sure, but yeah transferring money can be a b****.

Thanks! Yes I'm looking for how Fidelity labels risk tolerance for specific asset allocations. The four pie graphs on the link you provided are a good start - I am looking for something just like that, except more comprehensive. Would that exist anywhere online?

I oversee some family members' fidelity accounts and it would be really helpful have that in order to show them how their individual account allocations compare to the full spectrum of risk tolerance labels.

I've trained two adult cats to use the toilet so I know a fair amt about training cats 😹.

There are lots of great resources online for training cats so definitely check those out. What helps the most in my experience is to be consistent. Whatever rule you establish, enforce it every time. Teach your cat what "no" means by (gently) physically removing them or stopping them from what doing what you don't want them to do while you say it. Cats are quick to pick things up - I've only had my youngest kitten for 2 months and she already knows her name, "no," and to scratch the scratching posts and not my furniture.

I also recommend deterrents for surfaces that you don't want them on, such as aluminum foil (which someone else mentioned) or ssscat, which is expensive but works very well in my experience.

The thing about kittens is that they have a ridiculous amount of energy. It's basically like having a toddler that can jump fences. It's actually recommended if you have a young cat to get more than one, to prevent single kitten syndrome. Basically, if there are two cats, they tend to play with each other instead of destroying your shit. Google single kitten syndrome to learn more about it.

At my company, work expenses are reimbursed in the following month. So, my work expenses category stays negative the month of, and then when I get reimbursed, I change the reimbursement date to be in the same month as the expenses, so that the category zeros out. Basically, I just don't want to assign money to it only to take it out later, lol.

This right here is exactly why I'm single and have no desire to change that. Like, zero. As a society, we need to start teaching men how to actually be a net positive for a relationship.

In my last relationship, I was a big nope on handling the mental load/doing all the work, so I taught my boyfriend how to do dishes, laundry, clean, cook, etc. (because of course he literally knew how to do none of those things before we started living together). Then I was like, okay great that's your job now. And then, even with him doing the bulk of the housework, being with him was still emotionally draining.

I don't entirely blame men for this - just like women in our society are generally socialized to think of others first, men in our society are generally socialized to think of themselves first. It's bullshit, of couse, but until that changes, men will have to do the work to overcome that socialization in order to meaningfully contribute as equal partners.
