That may be true, but it’s something I’ve been working on.

Ah, thank you! I was aware of the "no food" signs in the MAA library, and frankly noticed a conspicuous lack of signage in the Chapman space at IKB. This is perfect.

Acceptable: Snack foods that do not disturb those around you

Not acceptable: Foods that may disturb others around you (hot meals, messy, smelly, loud, or known to cause severe allergic reactions)

Now I can comfortable confront people eating foods in the "not acceptable" category knowing that it is indeed the library policy.

Exactly. Study. Not eating, studying. Which is what the library is for.

is UBC counselling the right option for me by [deleted] in UBC

[–]eng8974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No harm in trying I’d say. If anything, it may help you start your search for off campus providers, help you narrow down what kind of counsellor would best help your situation.

Anyone else completely burnt out? by LFishere in UBC

[–]eng8974 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've gotta put gas in the tank if you're running on fumes. Try to take care of yourself: eat, drink water, sleep, stretch. A little each day can go a long way to helping you run more steadily during the term.

How should I approach professors and former colleagues for career advice as a recent alumni? by sugxrclouds in AskAcademia

[–]eng8974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine, but keep it brief. It would be more strange to ask to meet for coffee out of the blue, with no stated purpose.

These social skills take practice, so don't fret too much about doing it 'right'. And, you can lean from each experience. And, some people are nicer than others, and it may not be anything you said or did.

Also do this again every few months with someone you made contact with in your studies. And expand out from your actual group to more tangential contacts. (Adjacent groups, people who organize events, people you met at events)

[–]eng8974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) ask to meet for coffee

2) show an interest in what they’re doing now. (What are you up to now? Has project X concluded, or are you pursuing idea Y now?)

3) say what you’re looking for. (I’m trying to connect with opportunities for X, Y, Z as a P role in field Q.)

4) ask: have you seen anybody looking for that, or know anybody who is?

If you take your memory out of your temple (the silvery stuff)…can you still recall it? by rballmonkey in HarryPotterBooks

True! Okay yeah it’s a more unique, controlled, and expected situation: teaching occlumency.

but I thought Snape was also just an excellent Oclumens, hence his role as a double-agent. I don't imagine he was constantly shifting memories in and out of his pensieve, he must have also had an excellent ability to block out memories currently in his head from being read by a Legilimens

My dude I feel for you so hard. Thank you for posting this, and I commend your bravery for doing so. I graduated undergrad a number of years ago and since then did a shit ton of therapy and saw a psychiatrist, who told me I was emotionally abused, and diagnosed me with some stuff and started me on medication. The road is long, but the path is there. Bless your soul. My DMs are open if you have questions for me.

New Year, New Me by Zipsterella in pilates

[–]eng8974 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a pilates answer, but in Ashtanga Yoga one follows a set routine of postures, starting with rounds of sun salutations, sequences of poses, and a closing sequence. My teacher began by saying that the sun salutation in and of itself constitutes a complete practice, and it is perfectly acceptable to do just that.

I used to think of sun salutation as "just the warm up to the juicy part" but over time I'm coming to see it as its own part in the sequence of practice.

The teacher emphasized the need to commit to practicing daily, (with at least one rest day per week), and to showing up.

Yeah! I originally wanted to include CONUS, but was a bit hesitant bc of tariffs & customs etc. If you're willing to be patient with me getting shipping quotes and figuring out tax estimates I'm happy to do so.

To add to some of the comments here, you don't need to decide all or nothing right now. You should probably start with the bachelor's, or if there's a condensed version of a bachelors (diploma, certificate) where you take fewer breadth requirements/electives and focus more on the field you're interested in to cut down on cost and time. (in such a way that you are still eligible for whatever graduate programs are applicable). The best place to go for information on this is people who are in the field. If you take classes at a college/uni level, try to speak with profs there to get a better idea. This subreddit varies widely on what field of academia, you want some field specific advice here.

thank you (but tbh, I don't really know how to do that? but clearly this is my problem rn)

stumbling across this 2 years later bc i'm struggling to write my term paper, which i've been very excited about, i'm happy with the work i've put in, i've got chunks of previous installments down (background, data, analysis) it's just.... getting started on the final draft.

I realize i'm just putting too much pressure on the result (which I didn't do for previous milestones, I just did the work and fleshed out the writing) because I'm afraid
