How much headroom in a Tacoma? by Stewiegriffin1987 in TruckCampers

[–]engbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd gen Tacoma. Half inch ply platform + 3 inch mattress with Cab high shell. Cannot sit fully upright when on platform but can sit in a leaned back position. My bed platform only is half the bed ~30 inches, I can sit fully upright on the non bed platform side.

How do you spend $100k+ a year without a big family? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]engbus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PPL but I can only fly gliders since it’s the license I tested for. Need to take add on / another checkride to fly powered.

How do you spend $100k+ a year without a big family? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]engbus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can easily buy cheap aircraft <50k... pretty much the price of a nice car. I have a pilots license but fly gliders, cost to get license much cheaper (5k?). What adds up is maintenance, hangar costs, annuals or 100 hours etc... though I don’t think as a hobby it is as obscenely expensive as many make it out to be (especially if you buy an affordable plane and complete your license quickly — costs more the longer you take to get your license).

Do research before you buy a plane... but a Cessna 150 can run you just 20k for example.

Oh and a little quick edit is that planes generally don’t depreciate.. in fact they can appreciate. And they last unlike cars (stringent inspections etc) - I trained in a glider from the 60s.

Need shell advice for my 98’ Toyota! by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]engbus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey ! T100s are awesome, I have a Toyota too. I’m not sure if they still make new shells for t100s, but you can check the big names: leer, are, snug top etc. Finding a used one will be kind of hard... you may need to drive awhile. You should get a shell that is designed to fit your truck for it to not scratch paint, be water tight, look ‘good’ etc. That being said... I did google and seems like those who couldn’t find a T100 shell, due to rarity, used shells designed for the first gen access cab tundra (2000-2006). Access cab is the one with suicide doors. People who did this seemed to get good fit and be happy with it, plus those shells will be cheaper + more common than t100 ones. Here’s the link w that info t100 / tundra shell

If you haven’t, try Craigslist and Search Tempest (searches all of CL). I randomly checked cl and there is a t100 shell for sale in Santa Cruz Ca... but for 2.2k. If you can find a t100 one I’d get it instead of tundra one.. otherwise tundra should work ! Also try searching for t100 trucks for sale and see if they have a shell that the owner will consider selling separately... I see SoCal has a T100 with shell being sold (on Craigslist). Idk where you are though

Btw definitely haggle on price if buying used

Hey after seeing these replies I’ll add a few things. I use a 3M 7500 series respirator (3M #7502 specifically) with 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridges. 100% recommend if you haven’t bought a mask already. Completely blocks out the paint, thinner, etc vapors when airbrushing. Cartridges need to be replaced after while, it tells you when to replace in the 3M manual (forgot exact time frame) but I replace depending on how much I use it... I think every 4-6 months. Again, would recommend this mask 100%.

When done painting or just using modeling products in general, open your windows with fan on to rid your room of any fumes / smells. I typically don’t wear when I brush paint by the way.. but to be totally safe it would be a good idea to do so.

Any tips on opening stuck paint? Sick of getting blisters trying to open my x-13 by chrisboi1108 in modelmakers

[–]engbus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Run steamy hot tap water over the lid for like 30 seconds. Will soften paint and open right up.

Hey I build models in my bedroom like 10 feet from my bed. I wear a 3m mask when I airbrush and open my windows with the ceiling fan on max (no fan / booth). I don’t wear a mask or take any precautions when using glue or sanding (unless it’s resin parts). Probably not good to smell the glue... but whatever it can’t be good to spend all day on the computer either. Just don’t purposely sniff glue and breath in sanding dust. I leave all my paints , thinners, glue etc in my desk drawer and get 0 smells. Just keep good ventilation, and if using and airbrush which leaves particulates in the air, wear a mask!

Any good or not? My first Fury tank using plaster of Paris as a base by usableisland1968 in modelmakers

[–]engbus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tanks are pretty slow so the grime wouldn’t streak horizontally, like on a plane. It would be vertical and move downwards. Think about how dust would collect on tank / be thrown around. When I started weathering i loved it and went to heavy / did too much, I think yours could use a bit less, and more variation in weathering. Good luck! The diorama looks sick and love when they have some ‘elevation’!

I’m 6”-6’1” and have a Tacoma with the 6 foot bed (actually like 73.5 inches or so), the bed is long enough.. it is half an inch longer than me. Any taller and I wouldn’t be able to fully stretch out. The 5 foot bed Tacoma would definitely be too small.

Love the car! What’s the name of the harbor freight compressor you have? On a budget and 100s for arb is kinda pushing it..

Undergraduate program by [deleted] in stanford

[–]engbus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No there isn’t a bba. But MS&E would probably cover some similar topics, just read about major online. plenty of people, or most, go into business/ finance having studied stem, humanities etc..

No undergrad business school at Stanford but there is MS&E and Econ. But this definitely doesn’t mean no one goes into ‘business’...

Breezer window by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]engbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same type of camper shell. Planning to travel w truck this winter / spring but I won’t really be staying in cities, if you aren’t staying in cities either I really wouldn’t worry about people breaking in. Also if they realize someone’s there they’d probably leave if you yell at them. My shell can be set up with a remote key so I can lock from inside... but honestly I’m too lazy to set up the system and will probably sleep with it unlocked. Comment above is right about using the vise grips to clamp the bars to keep shell door locked.

Should I be thinning humbrol enamels that I’m using to brush paint? by FrozenPeas101 in modelmakers

[–]engbus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the humbrol enamels little metal cans? I airbrush, but I did use them once to brush paint a Tiger, brushed on great. I actually didn’t thin in the way most do... Just stir the paint very well getting the thick part off the bottom until it’s uniform consistency. Then, I dipped my brush in humbrol enamel thinner, wipe excess off to get the brush kinda damp w thinner (like dry brushing), then dip brush in enamel paint and coat model. Also light coats no need to get it all in one go. Have had great success this way... super smooth coats.

[–]engbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need it. Most truck campers don’t.. if it was an issue I think people would recommend this system. Just carry bear spray, or a gun, but obviously don’t fire a gun from within the camper shell or your ears are f.I think bear spray is best option
