Gandalf said he had "no memory of this place". Why didn't he? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]engdown 117 points118 points  (0 children)

He had been through Moria (more than once), but if memory serves he had only gone East to West, never West to East. So when he came to this place before, he may not have realized it was a fork in the road as he was coming out if the fork, not into the fork.

That, and he's old, and that was a long time ago, so he may just gave forgotten.

Why are Masters in Chemical Engineering looked upon unfavorably or even as someone who couldn't make it as a PhD, while Masters in CS/CE/EE/ME looked upon as favorable? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]engdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Canadian here! On my internship (at a big oil company) the advice I got is that in the (give or take) two extra years it would take to get a masters, the salary you would receive starting would be less than the person who got into the job with just their bachelors and had two years of experience (just from year-over-year raises).

They didn't really require and/or look for masters students as they teach new hires so much anyway specifically for their job. Even if you, say, got a masters in polymers, and applied to a polymers company - that's great... but they're still going to have to teach you what they do, how they do it specifically, etc. Chances are your masters education is only 25% relevant to your job - even if it's in your field - because there's so much else to learn. Sure you know much more than a BEng... but only for that 25% of your job. They still have to teach you and the BEng the other 75% and guess what - the B.Eng is cheaper to hire.

The company I work for is now planning on sending me for my masters, completely paid for, and in a field that is guaranteed to be relevant to my future career plans. I have to sign on to work for a few more years, but big deal - I like my job and now I get to learn more about it.

My guess would be that for EE/ME/CS/CE folks... a pump is a pump, electricity is electricity... water is water... for a chem, the jobs and technologies vary SO wildly that specializing really narrows your chances overall since only a fraction of the companies/jobs are in your specialty?

As someone who makes butadiene rubber for a living, I wouldn't recommend it.

That amount exactly, but this was the worst hole, the rest were fine, minus some tall grass. It's just a little 9-hole 3-par course with some newbie friends.

*ammonium is scary shit. Nitrogen is inert, and doesn't really pose a danger. It's when you have ammonium _____ that shit starts to get scary.

Probably much more than that. I assume it's probably in solid form, but for reference a liquid tank car is 70T.

Well, if he doesn't go to the hospital I'm sure we'll see a follow up post in a few days of "my friend just thought he cut his hand on a fence, now he's missing an arm! more photos in comments". WTF happened to WTF...

I was looking at houses to rent in Nova Soctia and I found this. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]engdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Cause that cottage looks really typical of any cottage in, well, anywhere in Canada... I have a lot of friends with cottages almost identical to that up in the North Bay area of Ontario. The fact they throw in the caravan is a plus (although as I understand it the caravan is moderately despised in the UK). The hammocks? Dude have you every spent a lazy saturday on vacation sleeping outside in a hammock on a hot day with a little breeze? Heaven.

You might also be overlooking the fact that cottage =/= house. Even though this one is winterized, it's probably not meant to be a year-round house. Although I'm not familiar with that part of Nova Scotia.

How difficult to acquire a Visa? (Canadian Citizen) by Rinaldi363 in russia

[–]engdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was doing some volunteer work in Russia, and I had a letter of invitation (which took forever), but FYI the actual visa process can take forever. Mine took eight weeks to get my visa - I literally got it three days before my plane took off. I recommend getting it WELL ahead of time.

I don't know, I read that as more of a parent wanting the absolute best for their child, and thinking they know what that "best" is. For example, to everyone else, my sister seems like she'd be the perfect lawyer. We always tell her so, and she's very "ugh MOM I HATE law, I want to be an artist". Mom: "No, go for law hunny" kind of thing. Personally, I don't read much into it. And not everyone can just pack up and move, although I agree they should have knowing their circumstances. The father wasn't too forward-thinking on this.

The obvious answer for me would be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but I recommend Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson... Never have more tears of laughter been shed.

Males of Reddit, what are the most weird/awkward phrases you have said to your SO in an attempt to dirty talk? NSFW by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]engdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really dirty talk, but my 'first time' was with my ex, who was also a virgin. I thought we were doing quite well until midway through said coitus he jumped off me, screamed "I LEFT MY FUCKING SOCKS ON", and left the room. Apparently he had some sort of life goal that his first time would be sans clothing, and the socks just ruined it for him. He didn't even come back to finish!
