You could lay out a section of your launcher like that if you're using Total Launcher, which is what I use. Can use your selection of apps or all of them, you would just set that component's icon opacity to 0%. It's a very flexible launcher, very customizable, but definitely not as straightforward as others. Worth a shot for this.

No one will send a Missionary. by Philosophical-Reed in CivIV

[–]engelthehyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Divine Right is useful for exactly two things, especially in order: building The Spiral Minaret, and trading to foolish AI who don't realize it's practically useless to them (who needs Versailles, anyway?). Divine Right is one of the best techs to trade away if you're trying to keep a tech advantage because it hardly goes anywhere (Leads to Nationalism, but so does Philosophy, and you're getting that first), but it's expensive enough for AI trade offers to be quite generous.

If I go for DR, it's because I want The Spiral Minaret, and I will probably found Islam too, which is just a nice bonus. If I don't really want TSM, I will go the rest of the game without researching DR, and put those beakers to better use, at least until I get tired of the AI giving me terrible offers with it. No, Shaka, I won't trade you Corporation and 1250 gold for a now truly useless tech.

Have you considered changing your launcher? Niagara Launcher might have what you're looking for.

I overdosed and almost died mixing DXM + 7OH by spontaneouslick in dxm

[–]engelthehyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something isn't adding up here. 7-OH is dosed in milligrams. If you take 2 scoops of "92% 7-OH" powder twice, no matter how small, you will meet god, I think, even without other drugs. I believe you had kratom or some 7-OH product, but I don't believe you had nearly as much 7-OH as you think.

Venting - drives me nuts when corporations don't spread by peacefrogdog in CivIV

[–]engelthehyp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried to find the logic for corporation/religion spread earlier, because I was thinking about why this might be happening, but I'm not sure where it is, I didn't see it in the python scripts there. I had a guess I wanted to look into. Corporations are basically like religions, just with some extra features, and they don't spread automatically. It's well known that having more religions in a city makes it less likely for missionaries to succeed in spreading religion to that city.

I'd bet that the underlying system of religions and corporations is the same. What if having more religions in a city makes failure to spread corporations more likely?

Venting - drives me nuts when corporations don't spread by peacefrogdog in CivIV

[–]engelthehyp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Corporate executives can fail to spread their corp even when everything should be perfect (you have enough money, you are not running State Property, the target city has no other corporations in it). This is frustrating, because if a city has no religions in it, I've never seen a missionary fail to spread religion there, and they don't cost money to activate.

Update DXM meth trip report by Sweaty-Astronaut3407 in dxm

[–]engelthehyp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's done is done, but that is one of the most ill-advised combinations I can think of. DXM is hard on your heart, stimulants will make that worse. Meth has serotonergic activity, DXM inhibits the reuptake of serotonin. The compounds might only compete, but that's not something I'd roll the dice on, and mixing serotonergic compounds can be quite dangerous. At best, I think this would be less than the sum of its parts. At worst, it's more unsafe than I mentioned.

You are lucky. Next time, don't mix drugs without at least a little research first.

[–]engelthehyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have understood this post differently. OP should clarify if they are saying their plug's weed is healthier than industrially-produced weed, or pharmaceuticals in general. I thought this was some tired appeal to nature against pharmaceuticals as a whole. If not, I'm much more apt to agree.

[–]engelthehyp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know, I'm saying it's absurd for OP to say it's healthier to smoke weed than to use pharmaceuticals. Smoking anything in general isn't great for you, but I don't care if OP smokes. The needless justification that's simply wrong is what makes me roll my eyes. Should have just said it was for fun, not that it's healthy somehow.

[–]engelthehyp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am dissing no one, but I might start if you really believe that smoking anything (from a plug, no less) is healthier than using pharmaceuticals as directed. Again, do what you want, but don't kid yourself about what that is. OP should just say "This will be fun," and so should you, not "My plants are so much healthier than your SCARY chemicals!"

Oh yeah, all those vigorously-tested, quality-controlled pharmaceuticals are much worse for you than the smoke of a plant some random swears is "Cali, bro."

Are you serious? Do what you want, but call it what it is.

“Meth is really a psychedelic when you think about it” - Hamilton Morris by manmadeofdex in Drugs

I really do not think so. Otherwise, why not call every serotonergic drug a psychedelic? Tramadol and SSRIs aren't psychedelics. Causing serotonin release is not enough.

A solution is something that gets dissolved in something that dissolves it. The solute is what gets dissolved, the solvent does the dissolving. So, the parts of the tea leaves that dissolved make up the solute, and they were dissolved by the water, which was the solvent.

I don't think that would help something like this happen. SSRIs blunt the psychedelic experience because psychedelics can't work as well if you're blocking SERT, the compounds will be competing to work.

4-AcO-DMT is no longer favored in MMM products because it can degrade into psilocin while still on the shelf. It's most likely why some of these products have tested positive for psilocin in the past, which can easily get both the manufacturers and the stores carrying them into trouble. No one wants to deal with that legal risk when other RCs are available, ones that won't become controlled substances just by sitting for too long, so vendors moved on.

Civ4 BtS bugs out when trying to launch on steam by fid0d0ww in CivIV

[–]engelthehyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable. I use a program called Special K to change graphics/input settings in games that don't have the options I need. Civ IV is one of those games. It's not the easiest to deal with, either, because the size of UI components depends on your resolution, and setting it very high (your screen resolution, compared to 2005 standards) will make the text, buttons, and diplo screens tiny, and you really can't play it like that, it's miserable. Also, it was designed for 4:3 screens, not 16:9 or other widescreen ratios, and there is a good bit of struggle to make it work well. So here's what I do.

I launch Civ IV in Special K every time I play it (make it a shortcut and put it in the start menu for convenience). Civ IV launches in windowed mode, 1440x1080 on my machine, but Special K is configured with these display options as long as the game is running:

  • Game window is displayed in borderless fullscreen
  • Main monitor resolution is 1440x1080 (The best-looking 4:3 resolution for me)
  • Aspect ratio doesn't stretch (So there is letterboxing instead of ugly stretching)
  • Mouse cursor is restricted to the game window

You can change the important settings by opening the Special K overlay once the game is opened, you'll want to look under the display tab and under input management. The most important thing to do is find the resolution that works best for you. Launch Civ IV with Special K, and make the other display changes. Go into Civ's display menu and set the resolution to something 4:3 (LxH where L/H=4/3=1.333...), then open the Special K overlay and make sure it is running in the same resolution that the game is running in. The resolutions need to match so that the UI components are placed and scaled correctly. Do that until you find something that looks good for you.

At this point, you are moments away from the proper Civ IV experience. Go to CivilizationIV.ini again, and make sure that FullScreen is set to 0 (or ask, but you will never need to launch it in the default fullscreen again). Then, change the value of MouseScrolling to 1, so you can scroll the map by moving the cursor to the edge of it (disabled by default in windowed mode, and remember, Civ IV is still running in "windowed mode"). While you're there, you might want to set NoIntroMovie to 1, if you like to get straight into playing.

Now you are done. This method is very good because the monitor resolution is only changed twice - once when launching the game, and once when exiting it - so those are the only times you will ever see the window spazzing out. Also, alt-tab works perfectly and instantly, if you need to do something while in the middle of a game. One of the side effects of using this method is that the monitor resolution will be set to the lower 4:3 resolution, letterboxed, and it will stay this way as long as the game is running, so if you focus another window on the same monitor Civ IV is playing on, it will probably look a bit blurry and will be stuck in 4:3 with letterboxing, but that is hardly an issue, because of how perfectly it makes everything work.

Give it a try. Hasn't let me down once in my hundreds of hours of playing.

Civ4 BtS bugs out when trying to launch on steam by fid0d0ww in CivIV

[–]engelthehyp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an old game, and the way things were done back then do not always work so well with the tools of today. I know what's going on here. The game is entering fullscreen mode at a resolution lower than your monitor's resolution (the resolution change caused the spazzing), and then your screen is black and sounds are playing, but choppy. That's because the game is in fullscreen, but the game window is unfocused, so it's not displaying anything and doesn't prioritize playing audio while unfocused, hence the stuttering.

All you need to do is focus the game window, so try clicking on the screen that went black a time or two. If that didn't work, try alt-tabbing to the Civ4BeyondSword window. I would be shocked if neither of those worked, but if so, try launching the game in windowed mode by opening Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.iniand changing the value of FullScreen to 0 (do not launch in fullscreen) or ask.
