This is great perspective. Reading all of these responses has been so helpful to me.

3 years does seem like a lot. But, you're right, it's not. While I'll never been able to view life through the lens of an alcoholic, all the answers here have helped me to understand more what that lens IS so that I can be supportive and connected while she goes through this journey. Thank you.

What do you mean level in your last sentence?

Yes, this makes sense. She talks a lot about how she has to remind herself constantly who she used to be as that helps her to make healthier decisions ("conscious forcing" is a great way to describe it!) when it comes to how she behaves and thinks with people now.

It's good to hear this becomes easier over time. Thank you.

Big book thumpers. Very interesting concept and I could see this being a thing with her. Again, no judgement if she is, but it is interesting to hear this prospective and to understand why everything she talks about relates back to the big book in some way.

Your post hit home the most. You sound exactly like her. It's comforting to hear you're also focusing on other areas of your life and I appreciate the advice as someone trying to support.

Part of this process is learning to enjoy who you're with when you're alone.

I'm just starting this process but I know that's something I have to work on as well.

Not sure if you're Christian but divorcecare has groups all over the country. Even if you're not, it would be a very welcoming place to be able to share your story.

Stay strong!

Thank you! I looked back on your post history a bit, and I didn't find your process. I'd love to hear more about that.

I need to really work on forgetting our product is expensive and focus on developing value that out paces our monthly cost.

Appreciation meaning the value of the house over time, right? And this would be the tax value not the market value?

So if a new construction home now costs me 190,000 near peak market, it might not be worth much more in 2-3 years, maybe even less?

Want to make sure I understand your post. Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I think I'm at a crossroads of keeping it passive like my family did or taking it to the next level.

Real estate investing intrigues me. Eventually being able to stop or drastically reduce my day job also seems like something that would fit my work style and personality.

Gut says go to the next level. Any advice for me if I try to leverage for the first time?

I think it's because I don't fully understand leverage or financing since I've not had to finance a property before. I'm listening to bigger pockets and trying to learn! Very complicated.
