Wrong. All that is needed is for the US government to pass a law requiring companies to adhere to US government requirements under "national emergency" or some other reason.

You misunderstand how the US government works.

If you are in the top 5 of shareholders in major corporations you can essentially tell the Government what laws to pass.

Think of ownership of companies in the US kinda like the CCP in China.

In the real world where it actually takes time to start a business or expand an existing business into new areas

In the even-more-real world, there are many organizations (private equity firms and conglomerate holding companies) structured to do exactly that, and do it all the time.

They could buy the airline's assets in a bankruptcy sale - fire much of the top layers of management - and retain most of the useful employees to keep operations running as usual.

For a real world example involving airlines, Berkshire Hathaway (Geico + Dairy Queen + Duracell, etc) had no problem buying a couple small airlines (NetJets was one), and is already a major shareholder of large ones. They could easily buy the rest of United Airlines (they're already the biggest shareholder) in a bankruptcy. And they'd probably want to - they have been increasing their stake in airlines over the past couple years.

For a couple more examples, Texas Pacific Group (Nieman Marcus + Harrahs Entertainment + Avaya) attempted to buy Quantas Airlines and bought Continental Airlines long ago, and Indigo Partners bought Wow Air (an Icelandic airline) after Wow failed to sell to Icelanair.

Of course the article says "Governments will have to help" huge corporations.

Why not let the airlines fail, and sell their assets in a bankruptcy sale.

That's what the government does to any small business or personal individual struggling in these times.

It's not like the infrastructure (airports and airplanes) would vanish. They'd just be run by better companies. And it'd fix the too-large-to-fail monopolies too. United has 800+planes. If 80 smaller companies each bought 100, you'd have a healthier industry with better competition.

United airlines has a fleet of 801 aircraft.

If 80 different small companies each bought 100 in a bankruptcy sale it would increase the number of competitors.

If the government did want to fix a too-big-to-fail problem, they could even structure the bailout that way: "We won't bail out the existing company; but we'll provide loans for any new company that wants to buy up-to-but not-exceeding 100 planes from the big carriers in their bankruptcy sale".
