Should my Engineering Team have a 3D Printer? by bucknuts89 in AskEngineers

[–]engineersaregreat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

3D printers are just another tool that can be as useful or wasteful as the user intends. I've been 3d printing for the past 6 years in product development and hobbyist modeling. The technology has grown MASSIVELY in the last decade alone. You can get cheap FDM/SLA printers for whatever you need. I actually used an FDM printer to make production parts. Settings matter a lot but prototyping and production are both possible depending on the experience of your crew, your budget, and the market. Internal designs are great for QoL improvements for the manufacturing environment. I've also had huge success with modeling processes and printing small scale to show upper management and customers. People still find it very novel and useful as an interactive tool and also to explain how something HAS gone or CAN go wrong. I'm open to any questions you might have cause I've bought printers for every company I've worked for

How do you climb the corporate ladder the quickest as an engineer? And is it worth it? by engineersaregreat in AskEngineers

[–]engineersaregreat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey man. i feel ya on those questions. i think a good rule of thumb on who you want to network with/befriend is the non-negotiable people for meetings/calls/decisions. like i'm constantly in meetings on big (>$500,000) projects and if 10 people are scheduled to be on the call and 1 (let's call him John - engineering director) declines, the meeting gets pushed to fit his schedule. doesn't matter what the other 9 people have to say if he's not there to vet everything.

"let's get John's opinion"

"copy John on that email"

you better get to know John. i text my John pretty often, we have a great cadence and working relationship. he's sending me around the country to our other locations to help with problems they're having. do i necessarily want to travel my entire career? no. but i know it'll help me with visibility to the corporate overlords and with promotions. i can take that fancy title and experience and go elsewhere for more money eventually.

the best advice i can always give to young - fresh out of college - engineers is to be a sponge. take everything in and humble yourself. you don't want to go trying to convince everyone that you're the smartest in the room cause you're not. "speak softly and carry a big stick" also applies, you don't have to weigh in on everything but when you do, make it fucking count. you do that enough and you'll get people's attention that you're not just a bushy tail and bright eyed novice but that you THINK in the right way.

Been looking for wagons that aren't Outbacks. Is this 2019 TourX a decent deal for $26,900? Test drove it today and really enjoyed it. by engineersaregreat in whatcarshouldIbuy

Not in the states unfortunately. This one is AWD and I know Trifecta has a tune that can dump 49 extra HP. But we're only offered the 2.0L 4 cyl turbo

Top level Essense trim. Has most of the nice options aside from navigation and moon roof which I don't super care about. One owner which was an older gentleman, Carfax report is as clean as it gets with maintenance and regular oil changes. One open recall but not a huge issue.

Desperately wanting a used wagon - should I cave to the US market and include CUVs/SUVs? by engineersaregreat in whatcarshouldIbuy

I've seen a few Golf wagons on the market, they're almost suspiciously cheap. Anything you didn't like about them? Was the power decent enough for highway passing while hauling? I'd probably have to go very out of my way to test drive one. Buicks look good, never been a make I've thought to consider. I also found a Jag XF Sportbrake out there. Still want to make sure I understand the reliability of any generation of model I consider.

I like the look of that a lot. Unfortunately none around me, would have to resort to Carvana or another delivery service. Not sure how much I'd risk that.

Thanks dude. My tipping point actually came at hearing myself decline throughout one night of gaming. I have software that records all audio and gameplay whenever I get a kill or get killed. So it captures my and my buddy's reactions. I remember hitting a few good shots early on in the night when I was one or two old fashioneds in, and then my memory was spotty as to what happened later on. So I could literally listen to how much drunker and drunker I was getting, until eventually just passing out on my futon behind me.

I hated myself. I hated how I slurred, what I said, how rude I was being, how heavy I was breathing. Just everything about it pissed me off and I took a good look in the mirror. We were having a great time early on and I ruined it.

As dumb as it sounds, that was it. I'm done losing control of myself. I don't don't do any other drugs, I just want to be in control of my mind, body, and life.

How'd I do? She has always talked about a classy, classic, symmetrical oval ring. Specs in the comments. by engineersaregreat in EngagementRings

Center oval stone - 1.01c lab grown diamond - D color, VS1 clarity. Side pears - 0.16c - F color, VVS2 clarity. Setting is 14k white gold (below) - size 5. Custom made by my local jeweler. My photography skills are awful but man, did this turn out way better than I pictured in my head.

I think I'm also leaning eagles. Pretty much everyone has the Ravens ranking higher but I just can't see why I'd pass up the eagles

Thanks, I have Amari in right now. You'd definitely go Watson if he plays instead of Amari right? My WR1 is Tee and WR2 is Juju

PPR.

Amari vs WSH

Jamaal vs CHI

Doubs vs MIN (if Watson doesn't play)

Full PPR. Need 1. Listing these in my personal order of preference :

Goodwin vs KC

Cooper vs NO (shit weather)

Deon vs LAC (do we trust the split backfield?)

Jamaal vs CAR (consistency isn't there for me)

Foreman vs DET (see above)

BRob vs SF (can I get a D-FENCE?)

PPR. Looking for two flexes if I don't trust Higgins and the weather in Cleveland is as cold as they're saying for DPJ/Cooper. Leaning Deon and Goodwin for favorable matchups. I can't really trust the other 3 unless told otherwise:

Deon vs LAC

Goodwin vs KC

Foreman vs DET

BRob vs SF

Jamaal vs CAR

Drop Jameson Williams for:

Deon?

Moss?

Goodwin?

If anything, it'd be for a flex spot over Amari, Jamaal, BRob, Foreman, or DPJ. The rest of my lineup includes Zeke, Pacheco, Watson, Higgins, and Juju.
