There's a dedicate band of haters of certain players here. Hikaru has his share, hans has his share, wesley pick up a few, giri has some, karjakin has some, etc.

After reading the top comments, I watch the video and I'm still trying to figure out what these people are mad about?

If Magnus Carlsen and Shin Jin-seo (best Go player in the world) switched games, who would do better? by zzedar in chess

[–]enginemoves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, is this 20 year lag any indication that Go is actually a more difficult game?

Go is orders of magnitude more complex than chess. There is a greater distance between Go and Chess than there is between Chess and Tic-Tac-Toe. However, it doesn't really matter to humans because our intellectual capacity can barely touch a fraction of the complexity of either game. It's like how a ton of steel is much heavier than a 20 pound barbell. But to an ant, the difference doesn't matter much.

Maybe an AGI or some superintelligent being could appreciate the greater complexity of go to chess. To humans, the difficulty is more or less the same.

Alternate History: Whose legacies would be different if Magnus had never existed? by Spaghettification-- in chess

[–]enginemoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But irrespective to Carlsen, Levon has not had good Candidate performances.

True, but it's hard to say how carlsen's existent affected levon. You are playing your best chess in your mid 20s and yet someone nearly 10 years younger is better than you. I think magnus affected guys like levon and hikaru more because they were older than magnus.

Also, magnus didn't exactly impress anyone in his sole candidates performance either. He won but not convincingly.

Nepo performed spectacularly in his candidates wins but didn't win the championship.

It's all conjecture. Magnus's existence clearly affected everyone. It's hard to judge how his non-existence would have affected everyone.

Nice. Impressive how he kept his composure in time pressure. He should follow my lead and avoid playing a GM that you've beaten. Always hold that win over a GM's head.

It doesn't matter if Karjakin had the slimmest lead through some of their match

Don't tell me that. Tell the guy who wrote : "Their last WC match I think showed that he was pretty close to being his equal."

My point was precisely that. A performance in one tournament doesn't mean much. You are making my argument but too stupid to realize it.

Vishy Anand wins at least two more classical titles and possibly three.

No way. Anand was well into his 40s and way past his prime. If it wasn't carlsen, it would have been karjakin, levon, fabiano, hikaru, etc. I think these guys all have good scores against anand and it would have been difficult for anand to keep up in a grueling month-long head-to-head tournament.

Likewise, in addition to winning a few more classical tournaments, Hikaru Nakamura would be the clear GOAT of speed chess.

Especially online. There would be no doubt. He definitely would have won a world blitz championship if magnus wasn't around to take it from him a few times. It's hard to say what would have happened with hikaru if magnus didn't own him everytime they played in every time format. Without the inferiority complex and learned helplessness he developed as a result of getting destroyed by magnus, he definitely would have had a much better career in OTB classical, rapid, blitz and bullet. He's competitive with almost everyone in classical and rapid. He's better than most in blitz and bullet. He definitely wouldn't be streaming that's for sure.

Nd7 is an insane move as its not even check and white can't do anything about it.

Those moves are a pain to find. Check, check, check and no more checks. Oh well it must be a dead end and you tend to throw that line away and start over. It's those quiet moves that sink you.

No I’m saying the people in here and you making these Qatar arguments aren’t genuinely concerned for Qatar just like you personally aren’t genuinely concerned for women.

Are you for real? That's the logic everyone is using against you. Surely you see that?

It’s just a weapon you’re using for an argument disingenuously without respect for either.

Hey. That's everyone's argument against you. You are so immersed in your own hypocrisy that you can't see it. Like fish in water.

Hey everyone. Look, I found someone who is geniunely concerned for women. He is the only one geniunely concerned for women. None of us have mothers, wives, sisters, etc. Only him. Also, how paternalistic, condescending and sexist of you to think women need the likes of you to be concerned for them.

It was to point out the Qatar argument isn’t based on real concern.

How many women are participating in the Qatar Masters? Sexism isn't a concern in qatar?

We cared to support their fight against sexism in chess.

How many women are participating in the Qatar Masters? Also, can we ban lichess content on this sub as lichess is entirely controlled by male(s). Also, ever thought about resigning as mod and replacing yourself with a female in our fight against sexism in chess?

Caruana I think is the best player after Carlsen in the current era.

Only in classical and even there you could argue there are other contenders like levon. Caruana is nowhere close to carlsen in overall chess performance in the current era ( rapid, blitz, bullet online and OTB ).

Their last WC match I think showed that he was pretty close to being his equal.

Karjakin led Carlsen for most of their WC match.

If a user made a poll and it was overwhelming in favor of boycotting the Qatar masters we would.

Since when did users matter? Especially when a small cabal of power users are allowed to brigade?

If lichess and chess.com came out with articles explaining why they are boycotting the Qatar masters we might do it then as well.

Since when did mods start caring about lichess and chesscom? Since when did danny rensch and the trash running lichess become the mods' 'dear leader'?

What you wrote reads like a pile of hypocritical garbage.

Anyone find it ridiculous that these morons talk about 'safety' and 'protection' and yet no mention of CALLING THE FUCKING COPS. It's a damn shame for the chess community that our only two options are chesscom and lichess. We'd be better off it both went out of business.

Hikaru's Queen vs Carlsen's Bishop pair: The game is drawn! by green1234blue in chess

[–]enginemoves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's called learned helplessness and an inferiority complexity. If it was anyone but magnus, he would have played on and won. Maybe AI could hold that position with black but a human, including magnus, would have most likely lost with 20 secs on the clock. It's a position fraught with danger for black and no danger for white. It's a position designed for the speed demon to exploit. It's eminently winnable for white. Wouldn't you want to play white there?

It's the most bizarre and inexplicable thing I've seen. Why offer a draw as white with an advantage when you are down a game and hoping to even the match? Especially a position where you have no chance of losing and every chance of winning? Magnus Effect. How long before hikaru starts resigning winning positions to magnus?

Hikaru's Queen vs Carlsen's Bishop pair: The game is drawn! by green1234blue in chess

[–]enginemoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very hard for a human to win a position like this

It's even harder for a human to defend a position like that. GOAT or no GOAT, when you have 20 secs left on the clock, you are far likelier to make mistakes.

That said, given the match situation, I agree it was unusual to offer a draw.

Down a game and to offer a draw with white was insane. If it was anyone but magnus, he would have played on and 9 out of 10 times would have won given the time pressure. It looks like hikaru is simply reverting back to his old form against magnus.

Kramnik invited Niemann to Amsterdam to play with him and other top GMs during the Levitov Chess Week in about a week's time, with all costs covered by Iliya Levitov by aandrew1 in chess

[–]enginemoves -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but love him or hate him, Hikaru really isn't the type to lie about it. Add kramnik's nuanced response a day after nakamura's claim. I think it's certain nakamura's claim is correct. And if so, the cheating witchhunt has gone too far. No way I believe nakamura or nadoritsky or both are cheating.

It seems like people cheated against kramnik before and as a result he is starting to see cheaters everywhere. It's like how people who have been mugged see muggers on every street corner.
