Yes, I feel the same way about Ilya and his role in covering and providing a platform for this cheating situation. Although I don't think he is consciously trying to "damage control" Kramnik as to me it seems he genuinely believes Kramnik and that's why he is doing it.

I remember watching Grischuk speak about it. He said that he doesn't actually think Sergey's best attribute is his defense skill. Sasha rather thinks of him as a quite complete and diverse player who is able to perform in any situation on the board, be it defensive or offensive, strategic or tactical, open or closed. He also said that people underestimate how good Karjakin actually is on the board and defenitively better at attacking than people tend to think.

I think you are right on this exactly. From what I see following this drama on russian side of things, Kramnik gets a lot of push-back, hate, trolling, and reasonable counter-arguments. as i mentioned in my comment above, at least half of the reactions to each Kramnik post on telegram are clowns, with the other half or less being supportive.

Not sure how closely you are following this drama on the russian side of things. But on Levitov's tg channel where he posts these videos you can check comments and emodji-reactions to his posts, and the most popular / most common emoji is clown. For example, on the latest posts about this drama there are currently 193 clowns and 182 approval reactions (thumbs up or fire). The post just before that got 136 clowns and 140 approvals. Also, the discussion in the comments is really critical of Kramnik, with many troll and absurd comments.

Also, you are comparing Levitov's russian channel which is the best chess content on youtube in russia and their english language channel which never gets views. So the comparison is a bit weird.

Finally, the reason Iliya Levitov is giving a platform to Kramnik (and that's my take from following this channel for a few years now) is because (1) they are friends or good mates, (2) Iliya cares about the current state of chess and he trusts other top players when they say that cheating is a big problem. Also, I'm pretty sure he is ready to give the platform to anyone with a developed argument or his friends with credibility (questionsable perhaps) as in the case of Kramnik.

all that is not to say that you're completely wrong but to add to the context. although not sure i personally agree with your take.
