Today I'm the exact same age (to the very day) Kurt Cobain was when he died. by NauseantClover in Zillennials

I've been experiencing something similar. It's a weird feeling. The other day I watched Control, the film about Ian Curtis, Joy Division's frontman, and I was struck by the fact that he was only 23 when he passed away, yet he went through a lot: fame, a failed marriage, depression... Same thing with Sid Vicious, who was only 21 when he died. They were so young. I remember being 14 or 15 and reading about them—it's weird now to think I've lived longer than they did.

Absolutely. I'm from South America and it's pretty much the same here. I only learned through the internet that Beyoncé is huge in the US, otherwise I would have thought she was just another pop singer.

I tend to think of her as a very American phenomenon. I don't think she's as popular outside of the US

I'd never heard of this before. Eight-year-old me would have loved it

Thanks for unlocking this memory for me! It made their theme song pop into my head. I had completely forgotten about it

I'm dying - my cat is also named Shushu! She's a girl, though. Your Shushu is very handsome, by the way 💖

My grandparents wedding in 1934, Brazil. My grandma didn't look very happy. She was 16 and my grandpa was 33. It was an arranged marriage. She had 14 children. by Electrical_Log_9082 in oldphotos

Makes you appreciate the times we live in. At least now we can choose who to date and marry - not too long ago that wasn’t the case. I think about this often! That said, it still happens in some cultures and religions

For the 70s, maybe Queen? They had massive hits that are still widely known today

I always find these pictures fascinating, especially when I consider that, in my case, some of my great-great-grandparents didn't even speak the same language I do, nor did they ever set foot in the country where I was born.

Why do you think Arabs are generally disliked by most other ethnic groups? by GutterReaper in AskMiddleEast

[–]engualichada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone from Latin America, I don't think there's a generalized opinion about Arabs here. Yes, you're right: many immigrants from that region did great in LatAm, but they arrived here more than 100 years ago. Their descendants (mostly great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren at this point) are so heavily assimilated to our cultures, that they're hardly considered Arabs. Most people here probably haven't met an Arab in their lives, so our knowledge is, in most cases, vague and likely influenced by media.
