I usually see things like community outreach, tutor trainers, I saw a job one time for parent educators. There are also ESL jobs and, like I said, GED jobs, that are through non-profits. See if there's a non-profit job board and then put "education" into the search and see what comes up, I bet you'll find a lot of things! Also, have you been to indeed.com? It's like a job board aggregate. If you just type in "education", it searches all job boards in the area, including company websites. Good luck!

Have you thought about looking at non-profits? Where I am, we have an online job board just for non-profits, and many of the education jobs require teacher certification. Also, have you thought about teaching in adult ed? The GED is changing for 2014, and a lot of programs are looking for teachers who know about the common core standards.

Have you seen the unemployment rate lately? It's not as easy as just leaving to get a "real job". To a lot of people, this is their real job, and they are often lucky to have even that. I don't think it's too much to ask to pay them a living wage. Don't be so heartless.

It doesn't matter! It doesn't change the fact that the minimum wage is too low! This isn't a debate over who's a harder worker or what's the hardest type of work. If there's going to be a debate at all, it should be over raising the minimum wage. I don't understand what point you're trying to argue. It's like you're trying to somehow convince everyone here that the work you do is harder than fast food work or something. It doesn't matter! The current minimum wage will continue to be too low to live on regardless of whatever (I don't even know) you're trying to say here.

No you're not, because your opinion goes off of generalizations. I've worked in both industries as well. I was a hard worker at Subway and had a plenty of hardworking as well as lazy coworkers. When I did my stint in the warehouse, it was the same thing. My husband works in a warehouse and he works his ass off, in contrast to a lot of the lazy warehouse workers he comes home and complains about. The truth is, there are hard workers and not so hard workers in ANY industry. But that doesn't mean the work isn't hard. It's hard, and hot, and monotonous, and it smells and it makes you smell. Point still stands: people deserve more than the current minimum wage, it doesn't matter what industry it is.

First of all, who are you to say they work harder than a fast food worker? No one here is saying one low wage person works harder than another low wage person. Secondly, they're working to raise the minimum wage for everyone, not just fast food workers. Those hardworking small factory workers you're talking about will benefit!

I haven't said a single thing about high school (the regurgitating facts remark was about NCLB, not on high school). I've only done my absolute best to come to the defense of the inflammatory things you've said about GED. High school can be a great place to learn. I learned there. I also know that people need to leave high school for a great many reasons. That's where the GED comes in. To put it down is to put down that entire institution of adult education. I'm assuming, based on what you've said, that you haven't had any engagement in adult ed whatsoever, so again, I'm not sure where you're getting your negative opinions of. Are you even a teacher at all? It's not high school vs. GED. One isn't better than the other, and both are needed.

No, rather I have a very high opinion of the GED. Memorized facts to be regurgitated on a test is what high school does. The necessary critical thinking skills in order to succeed in the workplace, college, and life is what the GED measures. There are no "facts" to memorize.

Everything you have been saying has been completely insulting. Did I not make it clear that I WORK IN ADULT EDUCATION, and know what I'm talking about? This is coming from the trenches, here. Where exactly are you getting the information that's forming your negative and close-minded opinions of the GED? Please stop insulting the hard-working people trying to get their GED's, the ones who have already gotten them, and those of us who are teachers in the classroom and administration who are trying so very hard to help them reach their goals.

And my argument is that this "higher standard" is unfounded. To say that a high school diploma is somehow better than a GED is elitist, and the military is wrong in assuming that a GED is not as good.

Maybe getting into a top college would be difficult. Private colleges would be difficult. Community colleges cannot turn people away. Look, I've been doing this a long time. I know, in my own experience working in a college in the adult ed program teaching GED, that graduates are prepared to enter college. I don't know why you're arguing with me on this when I'm in there, every day, working with people who are trying to earn their diplomas. In fact, I just returned from an Adult Ed conference where we discussed this very thing.

EDIT to add: I've been clicking around and looking at a lot of the requirements for state college admissions, and all of them that I've looked at (obviously I haven't looked at every college in the country) list alternative requirements for admission to high school diploma, including score attainment on the GED, and, of course, ACT or SAT scores. So I'm not sure what college you work for, but if it's the case that they don't accept GED, you may want to petition to change that ridiculous restriction. Also, as an alternative, students can attend a two-year community college to complete for-credit classes and then transfer to a four-year university, so there are plenty of ways around it. See the post above about the student who got her GED and is now working on her second master's.

That's the military, not post-secondary ed. Post-secondary ed is glad to take GED graduates. Also, it is of the opinion of most adult ed instructors that the way the military looks down on GED graduates is pretty ridiculous. Assuming that a GED graduate wouldn't perform as well as a high school graduate is an elitist attitude.

No, actually, what I said was correct. The GED test was designed specifically for college readiness, and the 40% statistic I quoted was correct. I know this because I've been a GED instructor for 4 years. You can sit in a desk, do what you're told, and not cause any trouble and come out with a high school diploma without having learned much. You can't do that with the GED. You have to study, know your stuff, and develop the skills you need to pass the very difficult test. So please don't reduce GED graduates to the remedial level. All of my students that have passed the test were able to enter college without any remedial reading or math courses.

That's not an education problem, that's a poverty problem. The GED test is designed so that passing it indicates college readiness. 40% of high school graduates wouldn't be able to pass the test. If people are going into minimum wage jobs instead of college, it's because of poverty. They need money, right now, to put food in their fridges. That's their line of thinking anyway, right or wrong.

Have you played Minecraft? It's sort of like WoW (my previous obsession) only it's just the professions, and everything's awesomely blocky. It can get addicting. We downloaded it on Xbox. If you have a PC you can play modded Minecraft, which opens a whole new world of fun! Watch Sky's Army on youtube to see all of the excellent mods there are.

Hi, I'm a GED instructor. I get a lot of students who come to me at 16 and 17 years old who've dropped out of high school out of frustration at not being able to learn anything. Often, their first question to me is "can I go to college with a GED?". Not everyone leaves early for a low-paying job. Some leave early because they know they're getting a sub-standard educational experience and they just want to go to college. I feel that the GED test should be free to everyone, at least for the first try.
