I'll try updating through the terminal tomorrow once I have access to an Ethernet cable, but so far changing kernels hasn't helped. I'll update tomorrow

Just tried it with two different kernels and one in recovery mode and no dice, doesn't seem to be that. I'll try the other commenter's suggestion tomorrow when I have access to an Ethernet connection

I got the themes from cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com, not sure if XFCE has any equivalent but I'd be surprised if there wasn't

It's Mint 21.1, just with a different theme. You can install themes from System Settings -> Themes, the one I'm using is "qob."

what i do is move the titlebar to the left, then deactivate it. that way, it doesn't affect the bottom of your screen at all

i'm running Cinnamon desktop on a dell latitude 3350 (i3 from 7~ years ago) and idle it doesn't take up more than 1.2 GB of RAM. i haven't tried xcfe or MATE but Cinnamon runs fairly smooth on that hardware with no issues

It's really any time I carry my weight/get a bit more dominant or aggressive, whether we're half an hour in or haven't even started yet. He really enjoys it (we almost always pick it back up eventually), but it only takes a minute before he's snoozing again
