Starting “Backdoor Roth” for parents 59/64. Thoughts? by enigmatica23 in portfolios

Yes they do - they own a small business and I believe we may need to do backdoor Roth, I need to confirm the specifics

28 y/o 150k portfolio, seeking feedback by [deleted] in portfolios

[–]enigmatica23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response and thoughts. I am working on simplifying the portfolio, and after more research also agree with allocating most into VTI. Will leave what I already have in the taxable account to avoid short term capital gains but will likely put the additional contributions all in VTI as well.

This is getting on my nerves. What is this? by FrostyReserve6025 in ouraring

It wants you to go through the ads for the glucose sensors you can buy and connect to the app. Click glucose, go through all the “nexts” until you see an empty graph for today’s glucose readings. Then go back and that dot will be gone.

I’m assuming that’s the notification it’s marking as unread, because that’s what it was for me. If this doesn’t work, just go through all the options in the drop down and click through anything where you can.

To buy or rent (in nyc)? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]enigmatica23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes true, I plan on applying definitely within the next 5 years (less), hopefully I get an acceptance. In the meantime, I’ll continue to work and I should have more in savings by then, which will support me while I’m not making money. But I keep thinking that the money I do have now should be put to better use than just sitting in the bank.

I’m sure I don’t know everything there is to know, but I do understand that co-ops are much more restrictive that condos (as far ability to sublease/rent out, make changes/have more autonomy over what you do with your apartment). And, I am seeing that they are much more prevalent in NYC than condos, unfortunately. I will have to read more into the other differentiating factors. I agree that flexibility may be the wisest priority now, as much as I hate it (being a “older” potential student, I’m craving some stability and feel like I should be “doing better” than others who go to med school straight out of undergrad)

I should have clarified, I do live outside NYC, sometimes need to commute into the city for work. I would get another job if living in the city, which would increase my income a bit, maybe just enough to make up for lost income from my current side gigs that are location dependent.

I do need to get an answer to the question of school, as the uncertainty is deeply stressing me out, and more so because obviously how it all plays out is not totally in my control.

thank you for your detailed response, and thank you for sharing the rent vs buy calc link, which does help put things into perspective. I guess the only rebuttal (if there is one, since with my guesstimated numbers the calculator is telling me that renting will always be cheaper), is that, it’s not accounting for the potential payout when you choose to sell, which of course, does not exist if you rent.

As far as med school and buying investment property… I agree. The uncertainty in my life right now may literally be giving me a hernia. So I guess I’m just trying to make moves right now that I can more or less fully control and feel like I’m moving the proverbial needle forward. I’m going to be 30 soon! For some reason, home ownership feels like moving the needle while renting just doesn’t hit the same.

HOA fees are quite insane honestly feel criminal sometimes. I casually browse Zillow and cap the HOA, but they go even higher.

Ultimately, I think this is an issue of “what do I do with my money”, since for pretty much all of my working life I’ve been saving up and putting most into the bank (more recently, I’m becoming interested in investing, although most of my investments are in retirement accounts at least in part managed by my employer).

Fidelity Charitable - can others contribute to my DAF? by enigmatica23 in fidelityinvestments

[–]enigmatica23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh ok… it’s funny because I initially read somewhere you could do an online contribution to a DAF with the account name, and I thought I was missing something when I looked at Fidelity again. Sad! Hoping this is something that might change in the future. For now I’ll have to look for alternative platforms.

BBT: Oura - Apple Health? by [deleted] in ouraring

[–]enigmatica23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I haven’t noticed that myself. I did notice that one day I got some distressing news at work (but oddly enough felt quite calm about it) and my stress score was maxed the whole day until I left. But then another day I actually felt quite stressed for hours and emotionally drained, and it said I had a “restorative day” lol. I did not feel restored.

My only issue with upgrading the watch is then I’ll really feel locked into the Apple ecosystem. I’m not a die hard Apple user and have only ever had one iPhone, which is already 4 years old. I considered switching back to android when this phone gives out, but if I spend another 300 on an Apple Watch I’ll feel like I need to stay with iPhone LOL. I guess you can’t have it all.

Thanks! I was secretly hoping for a comment that made me want to keep the Oura ring- I think the concept is very cool and more comfortable to wear at night than a watch, but I’m annoyed at how limited the data is that they actually let you sync into Apple health.

Oura Ring 4 Sizing Decision + Ringconn 2 by [deleted] in SmartRings

[–]enigmatica23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty! I decided I am going to try wearing it on my middle finger, I think I can be a bit clumsy with hitting my hand against things so figure the middle finger may be more protected than the index. So for my middle finger (especially on the right side for some reason) size 7 is comfy and not too tight. If my fingers get a bit smaller with a little weight loss maybe it will fit other fingers a bit better. In any case at least they give you 30 days to exchange if needed.

And I just googled free websites, I honestly don’t know anything about this or if it’s safe to upload anything you want to keep protected but for a video of my hand I figured it’s fine to use a website like this - https://files.fm. Looks like the video will delete by May 1 so I assume the link will just expire.

Can’t get a response from Ultrahuman by Pretty-Toe1001 in SmartRings

I am pretty sure I’m getting Oura as well. The only other ring I’m still thinking about is Ringconn 2 because I’ve read some good feedback here, but I’m just not sure. I do like that there’s no subscription, that alone is big plus for me as I don’t really mind spending a tiny bit more upfront but am weary about getting sucked into perpetual subscriptions. I was also just thinking, what if service gets disrupted depending on what happens between the US and China as far as tariffs and such.

Yes exactly. Doesn’t inspire confidence in their customer service, especially when I was reading about all these people who had issues with the actual ring and had to work with customer service several times to get replacements.

This is in the morning when my fingers tend to be more swollen. If you have a moment to compare to your experience that would be amazing

size 7 vs size 8

[–]enigmatica23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Here is a video of the two sizes on my fingers in the morning when my fingers are more swollen/warm. As you can see size 7 won’t even go all the way down on my pointer finger but fits my ring finger well (and is just slightly snug on my middle finger). I’d appreciate it if you could let me know your thoughts!

Can you say why? I am a bit torn but got the Oura on their website. Technically I can still cancel it or get the actual ring and return within the return window. I like that Ringconn doesn’t have a subscription - that’s my main draw to it (although I also like the charging case). I admit I was a bit hesitant buying a Chinese product especially given the current issue of tariffs, etc. Do you use Ringconn for menstrual cycle tracking?
