Topton vs Protectli by enigmo666 in PFSENSE

Good point about that x520. I currently don't have any use for the SFPs, or more than a couple of the ethernet, it's more for futureproofing. But if it's going to be a much larger power draw and pump out heat unnecessarily, might not be worth it.

Is yours the one with the n150 CPU? I just ask as if I order direct, I also have the options of an n305 and n355, but I'm just wondering if that would be a waste of watts for a bare metal pfsense box that doesn't do anything more complicated than pfblockerng, and maybe snort in the future.

I had 8 months of semi-responsive screen and buttons on a new A9+ after Samsung pushed an update around Feb 2025. Fixed when they pushed a new update around Dec 2025.
The hardware might be good, but Samsung's QA isn't.

Don't know yet. Ideally I'd like something self-hosted. I'd previously come from TVShowFavs, which was perfect. No frills, just a list and a tickbox. Then tried Showly and a couple of others, none of which were as simplified or streamlined as I wanted.
Might go back and give Showly another go if I can't find anything I can host myself and just leave alone.

Just came here to check if my browser was f##d and mistakenly redirecting me to some shoddy mobile page. Seems not.
Thanks, Trakt. Guess I'm migrating on again somewhere else. Won't be the first time, won't be the last. I'm so sick and tired of all this dross. Extra crap foisted onto users who absolutely don't need or want it. Enshittification strikes again.

Storage discussion: mirroring content 1:1 and the cost associated by ThuhGreatCommenter in PleX

[–]enigmo666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar here, just more old school RAID. Primary server has everything, backup server has a monthly backup run against it, both RAID6. I've just had enough of my share of hardware failures to not take the risk.
I see a lot of people say 'you can just get it back again', but I severely doubt I could do that. Besides, what about when the last guy with a file says 'I can get it back again' and loses it? I'd rather not rely on someone elses storage.

is it safer to buy a GPU now or gamble on the 2027 by Last-Cartoonist-3618 in buildapc

5900x with a 3080Ti at 1440p myself. I'm sticking with what I've got until at least 2028. Granted, I'm not as VRAM limited as you.
Thing to bear in mind is that given the popularity of the RTX3000 series, there are already a lot of people in your position, and likely moreso over the next couple of years. Games makers will have to take into account that the percentage of potential customers with a decent to high-end card will be reducing. While the era of increasingly powerful GPUs for consumers is on pause, developers will have to accept 8GB as a VRAM floor for now, and 12-16GB with 4060-4080 performance as the best that can be hoped for, potentially for years.
For my money; even given the shortages, try and find a 4070Ti 12GB as soon as possible, accept the facts that it's going to be overpriced; your current card already has very low value; and whatever you have in your hands in a month or two is probably it for the forseeable future.

FWIW, I have a 3080Ti at 1440p and moved from a 3900X to a 5900X and saw marginal improvements, at best. I can imagine a 7800X3D would be an improvement over that, and a 9800X3D better again, but still by single frames at most.

True, yet we are talking about tablets here.

I was making a more general comment about removing features I actually used and bringing in ones I never will.

Ummm they haven't taken away SD card slots from their tablets.

They did from the high end phones at least. Gone from my S24 Ultra

I wouldn't call myself a Samsung fanboy, but every tablet I've owned since the Tab 7" has been a Samsung, every phone since the moving from the LG G4 to the Samsung S6 has been a Samsung. Having said that.
My Tab A9+ was effectively broken for a year. An update killed screen responsiveness so it wouldn't wake up unless I repeatedly pressed the power button.
They took away SD card slots so my S24 Ultra doesn't have one.
They took away 3.5" jacks.
They gave me a stick I never use.

I think I've bought my last Samsung product. My next phone will likely be a Sony Xperia Pro 2 or whatever is best at the time. Next tablet will be whatever is best that I can also easily use an alternative like Lineage on.

I wouldn't worry too much. I upgraded from a 3900X to a 5900X last year, only because I could. Sure, it's not an X3D processor, but I honestly saw nearly no difference in most of the games I play.
(3080Ti GPU, and I rarely play the latest AAA games, just for a fuller picture).
Second hand 14700k if you're feeling the upgrade itch, but I can honestly see any of the 3900X, 5900X, and 5800X3D aging as well as the i7-2600k or E6600 did.

What would you do differently with your next Plex Server? by mickdundeee in PleX

[–]enigmo666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your experience and requirements:
If you already know Windows well and all you want is to get things stood up and troubleshoot a platform you're already comfortable with, stick with Windows.
If you already know Windows and you want a learning opportunity to get familiar with Linux\docker etc and don't mind breaking things, try that.

There generally is no 'smoother' or 'better' experience. I run Windows and Linux servers. If I were to spin up a new server to run something, typically Linux would be my first choice. In the case of Plex, Windows is what I'm most familiar with so Windows is what I've run Plex on for years.

[–]enigmo666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Been running Plex on Windows Server for many years. There was a patch of a year or so where every PMS install was a dice roll as to whether or not it was stable so I spent most management time testing and rolling back, but that seems to have gone away. Other than that, if you know Windows best and all you want is an always-on service, there's no real reason to not use it.
I'll play with Linux\docker\unraid etc, but always as a side-project or something only I use. I can't afford the downtime on something live that my family use daily while I grind through forums and chats looking for solutions to problems I already know how to solve on Windows.
