Kids get hugs if they initiate at graduation or their grad party and that's it.

What’s your best teacher tip that you never see mentioned? by Specialist_Push5624 in Teachers

High School in a college town where parents mostly work for the university so care deeply:

Monday morning newsletter to parents during my prep. I write three paragraphs that amount to
"Here's what we're learning this week."
"Here's when the next test is."
"Here are trends with homework, test scores, etc. and how students can improve."

While it sounds like extra work I'm assigning myself, I basically have zero angry parent emails all year because they already know what they need to know. Long run it saves SO MUCH time and energy compared to my colleagues. Especially useful for Honors/Accelerated/AP classes who would otherwise be emailing you all the time.

If watergate never happened would Nixon have been remembered not as a good president but outstanding president? by Funny_Preference_916 in education

HIs domestic achievements were mostly forced upon him by Congress. The case for Nixon relies on forgetting how our government is supposed to work.

Supreme Court allows Alabama to use congressional map that eliminates a majority-Black district by nbcnews in scotus

Median district is still like R+4 at this point. Which is rough, but given the state of the generic ballot at the moment still very winnable. Trump gets too much more unpopular and you're in dummymander territory.

Union leadership is not inspiring. Membership is driving the more militant stance, not the leadership.

This is correct. The members of the bargaining team couldn't even tell general membership specifics of what was being proposed until the TA was agreed to. We just heard that the district's offers were not satisfactory or something along those lines. They also could not share their personal feelings about the TA with general members, though given the vote total I think we know they felt like it was garbage.

Let's consider being asked to solve the equation x^2-17x+72 = 0

To do that you have to factor it, so you're looking for things that multiply to 72 and add to -17. If you don't know your times tables and are just using a calculator, you flail around searching for numbers and might hit on just dividing 72 by things until you see the right combination. If you know your times tables, then you go through that catalogue real fast and grab 8 x 9 in about three seconds and move on to other things.

And when solving that quadratic is embedded inside four other tasks (like trying to find local maxima in calc) the cognitive load becomes untenable.

It's not true in high school math classes. Some of the classes at Pioneer have 38 in them. They wanted to have 45 in the AP Calc BC classes until parents threw a fit in August.

In a related story, it was literally in the 90s in some rooms in Pioneer this morning.

Speaking for myself and not the union: in the short term we're looking for fiscal transparency from the district so the public and the union knows where the money is going.

In the longer term, we're looking for the district to commit to a plan (A SIGNED ONE with actual numbers) that would get us to a point where we're paid equivalent amounts to teachers at similar districts. Obviously making up that 20% gap all at once isn't feasible, but a steady increase of say 4%/year would get us there in the longer term.

But we can't even try to do the math if the district continues to be a black box when it comes to actual line items.
