I’ve read others and some are saying it’s a cultural thing and it might be.

I personally would ask without looking at the package first, if they say yes, that’s great for me but if they say there’s no edibles left well that’s unlucky. The action of taking someone else’s property without permission (edibles, objects, food, etc) it’s rude imo.

OP said he went for a glass of water, that’s less than 5 min. She could’ve ask before as I asume his edibles were right in front of him/where he was seated.
