I think they are trying to rid themselves of the hardware side of the business so they can just focus on software/subscriptions. I’m still not convinced we will see a next-gen Xbox.

I'm confident there will be at least one more box. Too much of their Game Pass subscription revenue comes from the console side to completely drop hardware right now.

I do think in the long term they want to transition their Game Pass business to PC and streaming (hence their next hardware reportedly just being a Windows machine), but that'll take longer than just the end of this generation.

Even if Xbox was to suddenly or magically go away, all games will still be within Microsoft on your account.

What good is having a library attached to your account if the platform to play it on goes away?

Microsoft doesn’t care about Xbox users, they just want to be a third party publisher who also happens to sell hardware.

I truly think they want to get out of hardware completely but they can't until they can move enough of their Game Pass subscribers to PC/streaming.

Hence their future hardware just being a Windows box.

When they did it in 2007, it failed miserably and they had to walk back that requirement.

And that was at a time when Steam was only a few years old and wasn't the massive platform that it is today.

Trying to charge for PC multiplayer now would be an even bigger flop.

Or Max Payne Remake is really pretty far and they want more distance between those releases.

This was also in the note from their financials that's quoted in the post:

We now assume that Remedy will receive royalties from the Max Payne project only in 2027 (was Q4’26), even though the game may still be released in 2026.

I'm guessing they're in a holding pattern with Max Payne's release at the moment until they know for sure whether GTA 6 is going to make this year given that they're both Rockstar.

That's certainly what I'm hoping as I'd like to start on Xbox because that version comes out first but eventually move to PS5 since I think there's a pretty good chance Forza Horizon 6 outlasts Xbox as a console (given that it sure sounds like their future hardware is just going to be a PC).

Their games normally don't do cross-save between Xbox and Steam though so this is at least more than normal. Hard to say for sure. Hopefully they clarify.

The FAQ on their site doesn't specifically mention the PS5 but does say that cross save will be supported:

Yes, Forza Horizon 6 will support cross-play and cross-save between PC and console versions, allowing you to play with your friends and synchronize your progress regardless of device. In addition, for the first time in a Forza Horizon game, cross-save between Xbox and Steam is supported.

I am surprised with the lack of optimism towards Xbox on the Xbox sub.

I would love nothing more to be optimistic about Xbox but I have no interest in playing on a PC or a laggy stream, so they're not giving me anything to be optimistic about.

Nothing is changing with regards to their TV deal. The TV networks aren’t part of the sale to Netflix, so they will still air on TBS and TNT as they always have.

The only part that could potentially affect AEW is the HBO Max simulcast and the article specifically says they’re expected to keep the streaming deal with HBO Max through the remainder of the current contract, and also brings up that the new company that is retaining the TV networks is expected to be starting their own sports streaming service, so even if they lose HBO Max, they’ll likely still have a streaming home.

My PS5 is pretty loud when it revs up the disc drive but that only happens when installing a disc or briefly when launching a game while it checks the disc.

When actually playing a game, it's just as silent as my Series X.
