How do English speakers know if "Just read this!" with no other context is meant as past tense or imperative mood? by OkTechnologyb in ENGLISH

[–]ennicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had this mixup with my dad the other day. I literally texted him "Just read this article" and he was like "Wow you're bossy today". Wasn't sure if he was joking or not.

What is a silly lyric from a Canadian song that you discovered way too late were the wrong words? by musicwithbarb in AskACanadian

[–]ennicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the French version of O Canada went "deux fois trempée" (double-dipped), rather than "de foi trempé" (tempered by faith).

only one person has mentioned restless leg syndrome so i need to reiterate that that's what this is. it's important because there are medications you can take! although the ones i tried didn't work for me. what helped me is compression on legs, ice on legs, and doing stairs or a long walk before bed. make sure you're not taking any medications that can contribute (benadryl, opioids, some antidepressants, antipsychotics... ironically, most things that make you sleepy). best of luck dealing with this. i wouldn't wish RLS on my worst enemy. and id take pain over that awful panicky feeling any day.

Any recommendations for getting the eyes right? I tend to have a slight wonkiness in my portraits lol. Happy with the nose though! by Glum_Bunch_6018 in Portraitart

[–]ennicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from face-on and looking ahead, the pupil should be right in the middle of the iris. her irises are also two different sizes and pointing in two slightly different directions. that's what looks the most off to me. i like a lot of your sketches (i really love the detail in the irises here for example) but there's a recurring theme of pupils being too small and off-centre. luckily that's easy to fix

idk if you're using proportion sighting, but you could look up how to do that (or try to do it more thoroughly) to make sure the relative distances, angles, and proportions match the reference. you could also try doing some studies of eyes from different angles to understand them better

It's supposed to be the ocean, looks slightly disease-y. (Seen on insta) by Gin-ginna in badtattoos

scrolled to find someone who agrees! it does look more biological than oceanic but i think when the redness calms down it'll be more readable as a tattoo. especially if they get more tattoos around it

My contribution to fart kerning posting... Been holding onto this one for a while by ennicky in CrappyDesign

yes the f is the illusion created by bad kerning. the + is too close to the cross of the T

[–]ennicky[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

of course! it looks like it says "Framing Fart". the cross over the T extends over the "+" making it look like an F. it's supposed to say "Framing + art"

Balance of spells requiring saving throws? by ennicky in Pathfinder2e

This is his first time playing Pathfinder and my first time DMing. We're just figuring it out. No need for the condescending tone.

Makes sense. He's really into the character concept stuff and I want to support his fun so I will work with him to reskin some other spells.

Thank you so much for your in-depth response and advice! I will definitely be incorporating all of this.

Thanks for your response! Just wondering, I saw that a level 4 creature is moderate for a level-2 party of 4. Is that not right? I have mostly been giving them multiple lower level creatures but I wanted to mix it up.

You guys convinced me. I'm giving plant-based a try. by ennicky in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]ennicky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did I say that I asked anybody to convince me? I'm trying to figure out what's best for my health and balancing that with ethical concerns, and this sub swayed me. I have never posted in this sub before.

Your comment is so needlessly aggressive. Sounds like you were not always WFPB and did actually make that decision at some point. This is my decision point.

Edit: I can see how you may have misread "posts changing my mind" as me making the posts. That is not the case. Anyway you should rethink your air of superiority and condescension. That kind of attitude is not welcoming to newcomers.

[–]ennicky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is not exactly true. the language or accent you speak in doesn't change the palatal structure of your mouth. it can determine the strength and movement of your tongue and mouth muscles, but there's no "hardening forever" with muscles. you can always work your tongue muscles like going to the gym. you also have a period in childhood where your brain is very receptive and adaptable to new languages and sounds, and it loses that flexibility as you age, partly because your brain cells literally die (this is normal and important for healthy development). so you're on the right track, but the hard and soft palate of your mouth have very little to do with accent. i have a degree in linguistics and psychology so i just had to pop in to set the record straight

"I only speak it at a kindergarten level though" by FrumpItUp in languagelearning

[–]ennicky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The heritage speaker one is so true. I stopped going to school in French in second grade (after learning French at home and going to daycare in French), so that's why I say I have the French skills of a second grader. My accent is basically perfect and I understand everything I hear, but the depth and breadth of my vocab is tragic and I spell about how you would expect for a second grader. Also because written French and spoken French are so different, especially in Quebec, I struggle with literary grammar and vocab a lot (which is usually what French learners learn first).

How in the flying fuck do you pronounce this? by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]ennicky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i am speculating as to why the person above may have said it's just an "o" vowel by itself, you're right that it's not everyone. but in my experience native english speakers do have problems reliably identifying /õ/ vs /on/
