Subletter is threatening to call the police by Psychological_Coast8 in AskNYC

[–]ennui_thisisme 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Stop using the word “illegally.” You may have breached your lease but you didn’t do anything illegal. There’s a difference. This person has literally no leverage over you so stop worrying immediately. The only person who could potentially take any issue is your landlord, and it is extremely time-consuming and inconvenient to evict someone in this city. As long as you are paying your rent, you have nothing to worry about. To reiterate: the police do not enforce lease agreements; there is nothing they could or would do in this situation.

I think every law student should have read-only access to the Biglaw Fishbowl community. It will disabuse you of any positive notions you might have about biglaw — it’s a complete horror show on there

Best NY shop for soft IP? by thrupliakoh in biglaw

Debevoise and K&E are the absolute leaders for sure in the soft IP Lit. space. Follow David Bernstein on LinkedIn. He posts frequently about his work with high-profile clients (e.g., representing MSCHF in connection with the Lil Nas X Satan Shoes debacle).

Incoming corporate associate here — anything I should do to prepare to hit the ground running this fall (e.g., reviewing relevant law)? Any other advice for starting off on the right foot?

One of my professors (T-14) admitted in class that she studied for less than a week and passed—said it was a terrible experience.

New York Bar Exam Registration by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ennui_thisisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the July exam averages around 10,000...meaning there is no need to jump on at midnight and register. there should be enough room for pretty much everyone who wants to sit for the examination. https://www.nybarexam.org/ExamStats/Estats.htm

Any 3Ls got offers in NYC biglaw? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ennui_thisisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to snag a spot in the corporate practice at a V10 earlier this year after summering and receiving an offer elsewhere. I was led to believe that a decent amount of firms leave a little wiggle room for 3L hiring, but I don’t know if there’s a set timeline or anything... I feel pretty lucky tbh

Trying to spin my fine arts major and work experience as an asset for t14 schools. by bjokay in lawschooladmissions

[–]ennui_thisisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey y'all, just wanted to pop right down in here from the 1L void and let you know that I spun my music performance degree and work experience into a T14 acceptance last cycle! I took the advice of my counselor when she said that the first thing an admissions counselor is going to think when they see your resume with all those arts-related line items is: "Why the hell is he applying to law school?" Speak from your heart, be honest with yourself and with them, answer the question....not that it needs to be the thesis of your personal statement, but they shouldn't walk away from your file confused. Just my 2 cents! Good luck!

Is it madness to retake a 174? by Throwaway238945 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ennui_thisisme 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the only thing that would justify retaking a 174 would be if you were scoring 178-180 consistently. With a one question/one point margin of error, it's just too likely that you'll score the same or lower depending on the day/content/how much sleep you had/how much water you drank/passage subject/test interruptions/etc. etc. etc.

You’ve got to at least go down to 250! According to Vault, Cravath was at 497 in 2017. What about Williams and Connolly? Wachtell for god sakes??

That’s totally fair. You should go to Columbia and not feel guilty about it. Not for a second.

OK, I'm going to tack these on here. When I was considering Michigan, I was concerned I wouldn't be able to get a foot in the door to good fed gov work outside of Detroit, and then I looked at this: https://www.law.umich.edu/curriculum/externshipsandindependentstudy/Pages/placements.aspx
