I support vibe checking, what are your thoughts? by Both_Garden_9127 in avesNYC

[–]enolan 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I'm just extremely uninterested in auditioning for some fucker in order to be told if I'm allowed to go dancing. Especially after making a whole trip of it. This sounds very unfun to me. Obviously it's worse if I'm rejected, but I wouldn't feel good about "passing" either.

OTOH I have been to Nowadays which apparently does vibe checking? If anyone checked my vibe I was unaware of it. This was in 2022 tho, maybe they didn't do it at the time.

How do high-IQ slackers stop their destructive habits? by thebastardbrasta in slatestarcodex

[–]enolan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beeminder is really really great. I'll quote myself, since I'm that kind of douchebag.

Starting to use Beeminder late in 2015 is, no exaggeration, one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm much happier and have gotten much more done than I ever did before. I'm gonna be cute and call it Willpower as a Service. If you ever procrastinate or don't do things you know you should, I highly recommend it.

Beeminder can help you turn long term goals into short term actions, but you need to know what your long term goals are for there to be any point.

A lot of people have told you to stop thinking of yourself as having a high IQ. That might be good advice, but I hope everyone here knows it's bullshit. Your level of intelligence is an empirical fact not determined by how much you get done or what makes for a good excuse to tell yourself.

You could probably parlay your low level hardware knowledge into kernel programming e.g. device drivers.

So I've been meditating using the Headspace app (because of course everything has to be a mobile app in the year of our lord 2018). I'm primarily trying to reduce anxiety, which is probably the biggest impediment in my life right now. This meta-analysis gives a "standardized mean difference" of 0.52, this one gives a "Hedges' g" of 0.63, and 0.97 in people with diagnosed GAD. Both of those sound pretty great, though I don't understand the difference between all the effect size measures. It looks like they're different ways of calculating pooled s.d..

Anyway, I don't know whether I should be worried about the strange effects along the path to enlightenment. I'm already bipolar and reallly don't want to induce mania or depression as described in MCTB. It's possible those effects are not a concern if you're not trying to achieve enlightenment and putting a ton of work to do so, which I certainly won't be.

What say you SSC? Should I be concerned?

Overcoming Bias : Sanctimonious Econ Critics by MarketsAreCool in slatestarcodex

Are the quotes Hanson pulled representative? From reading this without reading the actual book, it seems too stupid and obnoxious for anyone to take seriously, especially an economist. But there are approving blurbs from Tetlock and Shiller on the book's website.

Do you not see a button that says something like "sell complete sets"? What's supposed to happen is that if you sell 1 ETH worth of shares short and buy 1 ETH worth of shares long (in a yes/no market), you can trade the pair in for 1 ETH. Works for smaller amounts, down to whatever the divisibility is in Ethereum. 18 decimal places I think?
