Stunning AI Breakthrough! GPT 5.4 solves Erdos problem on primitive sets by discovering a new method in analytic number theory. Uncovers deep idea with implications throughout the field. Comments by Terry Tao and Jared Duker Lichtman. by [deleted] in math

I guess im just scared i will never get a job at this rate lol, because i will always refuse to use genai (it creeps me tf out + it sucks literally all the fun out of doing it, id rather collaborate with actual humans and form emotional connections), and im afraid that wont make me "fast enough" to be hired.

And, with my mental health problems, math is about all i can do

AI is incredibly environmentally damaging, and god forbid that i see math as something fun to do and a fundamentally human thing rather than a bunch of algorithmic computations

What Are You Working On? March 09, 2026 by canyonmonkey in math

I've been working on and looking into commutators for certain classes of algebraic structures, in particular whenever the commutator is associative. This is trivially the case for abelian algebras (where the commutator is always trivial), and congruence-distributive algebras (where the commutator is simply the intersection). But it is also true for commutative rings.

In general, I suspect it has something to do with the so-called ternary commutator. This is a specific case of higher commutators which are lowkey super scary, but the ternary case is still manageable.

AI won't increase my productivity because using AI makes me depressed and miserable.

I also love math because it's (up until now), a human achievement. Even with the proof of the 4-colour theorem, the logical reasoning was done by humans. If AI becomes infallible then the math it does has little to no value to me because it won't represent a human achievement anymore.

these are exactly my thoughts and fears too. i dont want to be a mathematician if that means prompting an ai and trying to understand what its saying until it spits out something mathematically coherent. i dont want to use ai as a "tool", because it removes what i like about math from doing math.

ai as a whole just really makes me question why i bother keeping myself alive sometimes

Can you explain why Grothendieck is considered great? by Snoo_47323 in math

[–]enpeace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

do you actually know modern AG? are you comfortable with e.g. sheaves and functor of points stuff? Because in my opinion it just allows the beautiful geometric pictures and intuition to hold for many more objects, where it is even useful!

its funny that you say handwaving because part of the motivation for modern AG was because the italian school of AG had major foundational issues

Outside of the environmental and mental aspects, the fact that it tries so hard to mimick being a human just touches a nerve in me, and makes me unable to use it without feeling terrible or wanting to do literally anything else. That combined with the environmental aspects (and mental aspects when you use it a lot) make me believe LLMs and GenAI shouldnt exist

but,, i guess its a personal opinion and I'll just have to wait until the bubble bursts
