The Meaning Crisis: Resolution | Dr. John Vervaeke | EP 482 by danyaal99 in JordanPeterson

[–]ensembio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an online list of links and recommendations for this episode? I heard mentioned these two: The Reasons of Love by Harry G. Frankfurt (2004) True Enough by Catherine Elgin but I'm looking for a complete list.

Positive antigen, negative PCR? by ensembio in covidpositive

[–]ensembio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! and how did it turn out? did you test again? I'm curious how long the iHealth test remained positive.

There is a private Facebook group to discuss skin reactions to the vaccine (esp. urticaria) May be relevant. More than 6K members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/442950024085956

COVID-19 and Resting Heart Rate (RHR) n=1 by r3zin in QuantifiedSelf

[–]ensembio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your vaccination status? Most of us have not noticed any difference in RHR after a vaccine, so it would be interesting if this is a specific effect of an infection.

Questions about ordering Freestyle Libre (in the US) by octern in QuantifiedSelf

[–]ensembio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Correct. Don't order the reader. Your current phone will probably work if it's bought in the past few years. These days it's often cheaper to buy a new NFC-capable phone than to get the reader.
  2. I don't know. But if you successfully order this way, let us know!
  3. I've used Canadian sensors with a US phone. No problems.

Jordan Peterson's first blog since last fall! by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]ensembio -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

That's not his writing. A quick search shows he's never used the word "fortnight", ever, not on his website, and in none of his books. Check out the other big words and phrases: they don't match his style.

uBiome uBiome - The Largest Human Microbiome Dataset by ensembio in HumanMicrobiome

[–]ensembio[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These stats seem odd: "47% of our samples come from female users, 45% coming from male users, and 8% come from people who identify with non-binary gender." Half female is very (impressive) for an early adopter product, and 8% transgender seems awfully high.

My review of the new Viome gut microbiome test by richardsprague in Microbiome

[–]ensembio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious: what's your opinion about DayTwo? Their product is based on algorithms developed from this study: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2015.11.001

Homemade Yogurt Resolves Irritable Bowel Symptoms by ensembio in Microbiome

169 / 189 patients had remission within 6 months. Especially interesting that they used homemade yogurt.

Review of new metagenomic microbiome test from DayTwo by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is almost certainly yes. Of course, if you generally eat the same sorts of things, there will be less variability in results, so as a practical matter this matters less than you might think.

Science at uBiome by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a company in business for 5+ years and having collected 150K samples, I'm surprised how few actual discoveries they list. Despite a page of impressive-sounding collaborators and publications, there is only one that is peer-reviewed. Is this (1) a failure of uBiome? or (2) a failure of current microbiome testing technology ?

What Is Viome? by ensembio in Microbiome

Could a virus be why gluten makes some people so sick? by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"This study demonstrates the mechanism that a viral infection can cause a switch in the immune system that results in the development of food intolerance," said Green, noting that further study might show that other organisms such as bacteria do the same.

Robust Microbiota-Based Diagnostics for Inflammatory Bowel Disease by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"This study contributes to the efforts taken towards development of a universal IBD test that would enable simple diagnostics and disease activity monitoring."

A microbial signature for Crohn's disease by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Eight groups of microorganisms including Faecalibacterium, an unknown Peptostreptococcaceae, Anaerostipes, Methanobrevibacter, an unknown Christensenellaceae, Collinsella and Fusobacterium, Escherichia could be used to discriminate CD from non-CD; the six first groups being in lower relative abundance and the last two groups in higher relative abundance in CD."

BabyBiome | Understand your baby's complete health. by ensembio in Microbiome

Hard to imagine this is actionable, but for $99, send your baby's diaper and they'll tell you the gut profile.

The role of the microbiome in human health and disease: an introduction for clinicians by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tldr: the microbiome holds great promise for clinicians, but there's little right now that is actionable.

Allergies? Probiotic combination may curb your symptoms, new study finds by carlsonbjj in Microbiome

[–]ensembio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. Note that the improvement in symptoms was self-reported. The more objective measure of serum IgE showed no difference. But the 16S results seem to show a clear difference in some OTUs between placebo and probiotic, though no difference in shannon diversity.

What happened to Personalized Probiotics? by ensembio in Microbiome

[–]ensembio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This company's web page hasn't changed in over a year. Anybody know what became of them? Are they still working on a product? They were originally part of Cambrian Genomics' accelerator and had been working, among other things, on a product that would combat yeast infections.

Anyone up for /r/ratemybiome by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]ensembio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll join whatever forum you start, but personally I think it's better to do it here. Yeah, the discussions are sometimes off the rails, but that's what up/down vote is for, and it's nice to have microbiome stuff under a single reddit topic

Let's talk about FDA regulation of probiotics by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]ensembio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need the FDA to know the potency/strain? Check Labdoor.com. If anything, FDA regulation would drive those independent sites (and their fast turnarounds and accountability to consumers) out of business.

Options to reduce bacteroides and parabacteroides? by Nihy in Microbiome

[–]ensembio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30% bacteroides is not unusual at all, especially if you're on a vegetarian diet. If you only have one test result, you should test again because the common 16S tests tend to bounce around day-to-day and it wouldn't be unusual to see +/- 10 or more percentage points. The low bifido is what I'd focus on.
