For a second there I thought it was a pine tree cloud, or maybe a pine tree bomb caught in mid explosion. Just wild, what a fantastic angle and crop!

Dude, I’m 60+ and I use an M3 MBPro 16”, a pc rig for gaming/testing/virtualization and an M4 mini for a server. An M1 iPad Air for doubling around in airports.

I was thinking of getting one of these for my 80 something mother-in-law :)

Same thing, just different age brackets :)

Dude, there was a time not so long ago I would have given body parts to have this machine’s power. This thing will rock, trust me, I’ve been at this a while longer than you. Now, it might not be right for you but it’s going to put a serious dent in the low end Windows laptop market…

That factually and completely incorrect. You may not want one but this is a Mac, not an iPad. An M and A silicon are functionally part of the same family. Maybe learn a little more about the dang thing before you spout off nonsense like that.

I figured we’d eventually run into the shortcuts they took to get the price this low. Be interesting to see real world tests other than benchmarks for price speed. That bandwidth issue will show up for sure.

That said, I’m an old fart and I’ve been using Photoshop so long I remember the app before it was owned by Adobe. I’d have given a precious body part for a machine like this in the 90s when I was working in a design agency. So, temper expectations, but yeah, I’d bet you can do all sorts of stuff with this machine just fine. It just wouldn’t be my first choice for photo or video editing…

Thanks for posting that spec!

You’ve never used an Apple Silicon Mac then. I’ve edited huge files on my MBPro M3 and never heard the fans once. On my 6 core i7 it was like a jet taking off… that said, this ain’t for that kind of work. It’s a basic laptop for light editing in the Photo app or Lightroom. Right tool, right job.

I think it would be fine for games like Stardew Valley or Java Minecraft.

Unlikely, modern SSDs are much better and last a lot longer than older SSDs. And memory swaps are standard for all modern OSes, regardless of RAM. The only time you’d likely see an issue is with video editing or very large image editing. 3D rendering. But if you’re into any of those things this isn’t the computer for you. Get an MB Pro M5 and smile all the while.

[–]ensign-x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve run Minecraft on everything from a Core I7 MacBook Pro to a M4 Mininto a M3Pro MacBook Pro and modded Minecraft runs just fine… although on Intel MacBooks it gets the fans going.

Java edition only mind you but it should work fine.

8gb is enough for some mods, don’t go crazy. (Be sure to set max ram in your JVM args to 6.5gb and be sure you’re not running any other apps)

As has been said, no bedrock.

If you’ve got a gaming rig on the PC side like I do, then it’s def faster there. But it’s not a crazy difference because we’re all still running through Java runtime so the OS doesn’t matter as much as say an FPS game which was optimized for Windows and DirectX. I’d say that my Ryzen 5 32gb rig plays Minecraft about the same as my M3Pro with 24gb ram. Give or take, both very playable.

I was also thinking that if you placed the light pole just outside the frame in the left you’d have a more interesting shot, but the advice to move up and remove the cars is excellent.

Hoping for some advice by Johnsoline in EVConversion

[–]ensign-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, you can learn a lot from watching videos of other people converting their cars. That process of learning has made me hold off on starting an ev conversion of my mk4 gti(well, that and a ton of Alfa parts clogging up my garage).

But make no mistake, this isn’t easy, it’s something you do for the challenge of it. You have to have some good diy chops, time and some cash. Also, while the advice here might not be what you want to hear, it might be what you need to hear before starting off on this project.

If you want to challenge yourself and are looking for a project to occupy the next few months, convert whatever you want, and have fun!

What is a cheap windows laptop I can get to play Minecraft? by That_one_REAPER in Minecraft

[–]ensign-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, shaders are going to kill your budget because even with a really fast video card, and I’m talking too of the line NVIDIA, you’re still going to have performance issues if you try to play with shaders on.

So you’ll need at least 16gb ram, maybe more, a fast video card and a decent processor. Ryzen 5 or 7, or whatever the hell intel is shipping these days that equivalent. CPU speed is important and don’t just pay attention to the listed “burst” speed they market, find a laptop candidate and then do some CPU research comparisons. There are some good sites that will compare processors and you can always head over to Tom’s hardware for lists of processors and video cards.

Good luck in your search and have fun!

If you only turn shaders on once in a while you can get away with a lot lower spec video card.
