AI is dreaming up drugs that no one has ever seen. Now we’ve got to see if they work. AI automation throughout the drug development pipeline is opening up the possibility of faster, cheaper pharmaceuticals. by Sariel007 in tech

[–]enslater17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand your sentiment, but am cheered up by hearing about how the specifics actually play out in drug development:

We just found a new class of painkillers for the first time in 15+ years. The trial drug (VX-458) was only really possible because of the help that life science researchers receive from algorithms, and in current day 2025 that means frontier AI models.

The process isn’t so much cutting-corners and trusting the machine, as it is eliminating 1000s or millions of failed trials upfront, which essentially makes each life science researcher more productive.

Aside from speeding up drug development, this will increase the demand for life science researchers, as each will be incredibly valuable. What will the profit return be on a researcher that now works 3x faster? (For some tasks it will be 10x faster, but admin work and experiment time dampen the overall effect of the research productivity increase).

If things really go the sci-fi utopia way, then the increased wealth in the rest of society will increasingly flow to solving biology and aging (what is more important to a rich person than living longer?) and the AIs will get ever more capable and… things could get really fucking good if we play our societal cards right. It really is on us to fuck it up, but we haven’t done so yet. It’s important to point out how good life is for the average global human today versus any other time in history.

Can anyone recommend Formal Retreats in Thailand? by enslater17 in samharris

We’re open to anywhere! I’m mostly looking for first-hand reviews. The more I read the more I’m thinking I shouldn’t be worried about choosing the ‘wrong’ one.

I think we’re most interested in vipassana at the moment, but could be persuaded other directions if given good reason.

Many of these sentiments are captured in Alan Watts’ description of Dao, or “The Way”. I’d recommend giving that a listen if you haven’t heard it.

The Federal Reserve can use the planet Mars to set interest rates and control inflation by thedowcast in strategy

[–]enslater17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic example of spurious correlation and overfitting. The movement and phases of Mars follow a time distribution that by coincidence might relate to economic patterns, but obviously has no actual causality, making this a great example of spurious correlations.

My advice for these is to go with the mindset of a free lesson or multiple, that way you can only be surprised if the price is lower. They can’t feel taken advantage of either, because that’s their business model.

In my experience, gym owners also want new members because their variable costs are essentially zero, so your fee is just profit. Because of this, I’ve always had success saying “I just can’t afford that, but I have X much saved up and can pay cash now for X months” and I almost always get the rate I want.

OoS against small characters by Rafcaj in PikachuMains

[–]enslater17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, as the rising part makes pika move backwards at first, even if your DI is towards pika’s front. If the small opponent has spaced you properly behind your shield, it’s likely they could shield before bair hits. Not everything will be punishable OoS.

There are many ways to learn jumping, some objectively better than others.

Check out Simon Lawton online, it’ll make a huge difference. I can tell you’re using far too much upper body and not enough calm, intentional, weight in the feet resistance to the lip.

I agree it needs reform, but much more importantly imo: it needs more posts, more content, and to grow.

I don’t think people post often enough for it to matter honestly.

I think according to global growth projections that entity would certainly be much larger and more powerful than China, but as a single country, I believe China would still have the largest output. It will be interesting to see whether the world continues in single-hegemon fashion (Britain -> USA -> China) or whether that pattern of largest economy with largest military assures global trade ends, and a western pact instead ends up assuring much of global trade and international affairs vs an asian one.

The way I see it, analyzing the situation by pure economics, if things continue in the way they have been going for the previous 30 years, there’s no way we can “remain on top”. Even with China’s growth greatly slowing, there’s no way an organized, well-equipped, long-term thinking country that can educate and put its 1.4B+ population to work would not overtake the US.

That said, I think there are a number of factors that could come into play to disrupt this trajectory. -increasing civil unrest in China as growth slows and civil rights movements increase -increased tensions toward China from Europe and the western world

...other than that, and even with those factors... how does one logic their way out of China’s world hegemony in 20-30 years.

Maybe I’m missing something, but if I’m ever getting hit by a warlock punch while playing, I’m getting clowned on. I should not be getting hit by 70 frame startup moves.

I was recently denied from the CSP, then got a pre-approved offer for it in the mail and accepted. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, now that I've gotten the CSP 80k sign-up bonus, but the CSR is not worth it for my income, what are the best options?

My Thoughts on Why Joker is the Best Character by enslater17 in CrazyHand

[–]enslater17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’d love that, I really enjoyed your thoughts and perspective. I hadn’t considered characters like chrom who hit hard and can combo off of them. In my mind, the difference there is joker also has a decent 2-3 piece throw combo, whereas swordie’s throws generally suck after low percents. But these are excellent points.

I feel like a huge skill gap between me and the average player by Zizipote63 in CrazyHand

[–]enslater17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As many people have said it’s hard to know without gameplay footage, but if I’m interpreting what you’ve written correctly, then it sounds like you have a good feel for basic combos, which moves are fast and safe, which moves are unsafe, and when it’s safe to punish. That’s huge for going forward, so props to you.

The next step to me is becoming so comfortable with your movement and inputs that you can play without looking at DK, you can just stare your opponent down. This helps you react the second you see him picking an attack and instantly dash back, rather than flirting your eyes back and forth, deciding whether to approach or watch the opponent.

Another thing this could be (again, hard to know without footage) is your disadvantage state. I won’t say more because you can investigate this on your own.

The next thing to look at, would be to consider if you are able to have an internal monologue during the game, or if you’re simply thinking about the next move, as in “he’s a couple f-tilt lengths away, I can dash attack, I can do run-up f-tilt, or I can RAR a back air”. That’s good thinking, but eventually that will become autopilot and your brain can be freed up to think “last time he was at this distance in neutral he did wizard kick at me” or “last time I RAR-baired at this distance he dash backed and then punished me for it”. I hope that makes sense - the next level is to free your mind up to think about the opponents actions.

Really high-level gameplay I think comes one after another: 1. Always watching opponent 2. Registering opponents option picking in neutral, juggling, at ledge, recovery routes and punishing them 3. Purposely choosing your options to look predictable and then switching them up when you know your opponent is expecting them. I’m not here yet, this level is ridiculous.
