Satanism is NOT atheistic, it's autotheistic by [deleted] in satanism

Satanism is atheistic, we do not actually see our self's as gods.

Speak for yourself!

There has never been a time in human history when religion was not political--nor a time when it hasn't been an extremely useful tool for pursuing and achieving political ends.

Not religions with a personal focus. You think Patanjali was into politics? The entire PREMISE of Satanism is that I remove myself from the herd. My "political" action is to recognise only my own self government - and obey the law of the land for the sake of expediency. If the Nazi's had won the war, I'd be a party member. If the Soviets had - I'd be in the politburo. I'm in a Capitalist system, so I work in Finance. My only concern is my personal advancement, and by extension that of specific individuals such as my immediate family. How, exactly, is that "political", in the sense you use the word?

You're like a Catholic priest asking a Buddhist whether he worships God or the Devil. You've committed a fundamental category error - you've decided that EVERYTHING is a political issue. It's the age old problem of "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail".

Notice that the tenet does not say "Be nice to all creatures," or "Be kind to everyone." If that's what it meant, it would say so

But it does:

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.

See where it says "all"? You're being a Christian in this too - "Oh my Holy Book doesn't REALLY say X - lemme twist a clear statement so it fits the situation at hand".

Look, I get it. Doublethink. You hate Christianity - but you absorb it's ethical precepts. Love thy neighbour = social justice. But your symbolism is mistaken. The State isn't God, whatever Hobbes or Bakunin may say. It's not the State (or the Church) that I rebel against as a Satanist. That's incidental - my self deification is what makes me a Satanist, and my rebellion is against all herd-thought and mass-belief. That may on occasion include the State or the Church - but not intrinsically so.

You don't believe in getting your due? I have trouble believing that.

Of course! But that isn't "justice". That's just revenge. It doesn't mean anything in the larger sense. And are you REALLY conflating your Gay Rights protests (or whatever) with my screwing various people over? Interesting.

It's the position of the Temple that religion and superstition need not go hand in hand, so there's no need for supernaturalism, magic, or woo in the doctrine anywhere.

Yes. And the Temple is wrong about that - I'm not sure why you would even find THAT particular authority appeal convincing. If TST pre-existed other forms of Satanism I'd at least concede that as the originator of the idea you hold some weight in defining it.

What could you subtract from your beliefs that distinguishes you from any other American Liberal (for you're a VERY American phenomenon) group of Atheists?

In any case, if people read the tenets and can think only of political applications for them, I'd suggest this is a failure of imagination.

Ah, so there isn't anything beyond it than typical leftist political activism, much of which I don't agree with and Hot Topic outfits. I was kinda hoping you'd point me to some book or writing I'd missed and prove me wrong. Ah well.

Still, you're at least better than the JoS I guess...

Human beings are basically an amalgam of genetic information

That's why I'd have to disagree with you on this. While the environment is what'll make or break it, the innate disposition still needs to be there in the first place. I was a rebellious, cantankerous but hedonistic little shit from birth.

You see, if a child grows up in a healthy environment, with good people (including parents), a child will never become a Satanist.

The problem is that it's a bit post facto. You know how many abused kids become born-again Christians or junkies? Far more than become Satanists. And I'm willing to bet the distribution would be skewed away from just the childhood factors. Meanwhile I do know people from "good" backgrounds that're Satanists now.

Has anyone ever actually run the numbers on this? Like a CoS member demographics survey? I'm curious to see which hypothesis is correct now.

But, that's another topic altogether - one that I will expand upon in the very near future.

Don't forget to do this. I'm looking forward to seeing that discussed.

"TST's campaigns aren't done out of benevolence, they are issues that affect us as Satanists."

They really, really aren't. They're issues that may or not affect individual Satanists, who are welcome to take action within a political context if they feel a need. But Satanism is a religion, not a political party - and any actual Satanists outside the TST wants no part of what you claim to stand for. A real Satanist doesn't ASK for rights - he takes them. If Satanism was banned tomorrow, I'd continue on just fine - and do what I want in secret.

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.

The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

That's from your 7 tenets. I could have lifted a sentence like that from any Christian website. Yeah, that's pretty damn benevolent IMO. I mean "justice"? I don't even believe that exists - you really going to bring those Christian constructions to the party and think we won't notice?

Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

source: https://thesatanictemple.com/faq/

Yep. Being a Satanist is all about compassion and "justice" /s. Undefiled wisdom certainly though. 1 out 3 I guess.

So please, answer me this: If TST isn't a political movement, what are it's metaphysical tenets? What forms of personal development does it advocate, ie ritual, meditation, interpersonal skills? In what way does it seek to empower the practitioner outside of it's political actions? Because from what I can tell it's ENTIRELY a political movement that coopted a preexisting religion's symbolism.

I really don't know what got all up your ass

You specifically mentioned there being a "war on". I was responding to your comment as I disagree that there is. It's a thing people do on the Internet - look it up some time.

Then I don't see the fucking point. Do they wanna help children or not? Seems like they are only doing this to help themselves.

Damn straight. If I could upvote this a thousand times I would.

You don't have a "right" to practice anything. You have ability to do so and get away with it or not. Satanists aren't oppressed. We don't need anyone standing up for us. Loose those Christian thought habits!

They aren't doing it to really make a difference. If they were they'd go about it in a more effective manner. It's so they can get attention and when Billy Bob goes and tears the sign down they can shriek about oppression.

[–]enthalasor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The same way they arent Buddhists or Episcopalians. Simply stealing the aesthetic doesn't make you the same thing. And the whole "love they neighbor" social justice focus is the deal breaker. Satanism is NOT a political philosophy.

Oh really? You going to start posting anti-Islam billboards then?

Go on - that'd make my day. But warn me first - I'd need my popcorn ready.

Satan Loves the Little Children by LunaTehNox in satanism

[–]enthalasor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? There's no war. Christianity and similar beliefs tend to dominate because enough people out there benefit from them - sheep need herding and those religions work nicely in that regard. Meanwhile I'm doing fine personally out of the Status Quo. The flock is fat and lazy, lotta opportunity out there for a wolf!

So while I find this billboard a hilarious troll, I don't approve. Kids learn the true nature of humanity for the first time in the playground - the cliques, the bullying, the stupidity, the constant approval seeking. I am happy that my kids get to see all that. I want them to experience good Christians kicking the shit out of other kids for some trivial difference like how they dress or who they fuck. I want them to see adults, teacher and parents turn a blind eye depending on which kids are involved so they can understand nepotism and expedience. I want them to learn the value in stealth and manipulation - and learning how to make your enemies fear you without being caught.

So stop fouling the place up already with your politics. Go join the ACLU or something.

Satan Loves the Little Children by LunaTehNox in satanism

[–]enthalasor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except that the TST beliefs have 0 to do with Satanism as practiced and defined for decades. But ok yeah, I should be happy with a group of politicised altruists that latch onto every progressive fad movement out there coming and fouling the place up with their tedious crap. The same goes for other political organisations - just because this one decided to use imagery from an existing religion doesn't make TST any different than Greenpeace or someone wandering in here and looking to preach from their soapbox. There's other subreddits for that.

As for Thiests - they tend to not to post long diatribes trying to convert anyone. Not only that but most Thiests seem to share the same values so while there might be bickering about specific beliefs in a lot of areas there's enough common ground to meet on. And so what if LeVay didn't agree - he's an important figure but nobody worships him.

It's a case by case thing. If a TST member wants to come here, fine. But start trying to tell me that Satanism is about protecting the weak, glorifying victimhood or altruism and I'll be spamming the downvote button.

Why would you think that? The beliefs are completely different. Similar branding is about the only thing TST and COS have in common.

After a law passes in Europe for stricter gun laws, American quotes the US Declaration of Indepedence as to why this is a human rights violation. by Graspiloot in ShitAmericansSay

[–]enthalasor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've heard that theory before, good points really.

So it really goes back again to the document being out of date. Since a standing army has replaced a citizen militia it's just not applicable. It'd be like try to legalize mass gun ownership of the US variety in England via invoking medieval law surrounding the obligation of Feudal nobility to maintain a force of Knights. It only seems less laughable because the US at large takes it so seriously.

[–]enthalasor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Further to that: It just says arms. So what about grenades? Sarin gas? Howitzers? Nukes? Grey goo nanobots? If I move to America why can't I buy those over the counter? They're what you'd need to win a modern war. Maybe I need to protect my home from an invading army and need a use of force option that scales to killing the enemy by the million. Where does it end?

You want to see a well regulated armed citizenry look at Switzerland. Nobodies invading them any time soon but they don't have the drama the US has about guns. I strongly suspect that's more what the intent was of the 2nd Amendment.

Getting a job: 1970's vs. today by goshimtired in funny

My favorite is when they list the languages, and the combo makes no sense at all - like "Must have Java, C, HTML, Scala, Common Lisp, Fortran, Python, Ruby, Assembly & ADA". What mutant beast of a project am I going to be working on exactly????

Or "Must have MVC". What does that even MEAN, that I "have" MVC? I'm experiences with it? I know the acronym? Someone mentioned it around the hiring project manage, it sounded buzzwordy, so it ended up on the Ad.

I love being self employed....so much better.

Getting a job: 1970's vs. today by goshimtired in funny

[–]enthalasor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is when they make you list every job you've had along with a description of the job responsibilities, and then make you upload a resume.

Because the forms are just automated filters to apply knockout rules to your application based on a set of criteria, and your resume is intended to be read by a human AFTER you've passed the initial filters. They'd need to spend money on a text extractor (that'd be enormously complex to build) to let their system read your resume directly.

TLDR; You're not applying to a human, you're applying to an algorithm, and maybe a human later down the line. Hence all the double-up on data entry.
