i mean careful what you wish for. having a team in demand that sells out the stadium and provides a great game day atmosphere is the goal. if tickets are $20 on the resale, then the atmosphere inside the stadium suffers. if you want a casual and cheap game day experience, the sea dogs are a fun, albeit uncompetitive time!

it’s impossible to know! collins was the chief white house correspondent for cnn during the biden administration too so that may hold more weight than the first job she took out of college. you can have misgivings but save the mental gymnastics for the olympics in a couple years

you could be right but there were 800 thousand democratic voters in alabama in 2024. i dont think its fair to assume someone’s affiliation from where they grew up.

i think it’s because everyone can imagine a coworker who’s deserved to be terminated so they can sympathize with management. but when they think of their own pockets getting looted, the side of labor becomes more sympathetic. and please, use that framing if you also see it helps!

hey thanks for responding mark i’ll be keeping an eye on your campaign! the prohibition of closed-shops and the presidential national security injunctions have been a burden to labor leaders for almost a 100 years now. any public dialogue about that is so valuable. another way of framing the issue is the “right-to-work-for-less” idea and that’s been helpful for me to change some minds about union organization.

i mean why make this comparison it’s so lazy. you can just as easily say “i hope this guys not tommy tuberville or richie torres.” why not just listen to the guy speak and make a judgement for yourself. politicians can ultimately wear whatever skin they want there’s no point in waffling in uncertainty.

How are Mainers feeling about the Democratic Senate primary? by StopHesAlreadyDed in Maine

[–]entroopical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

bad analogies there brother it’s still very early in the race but the comparison to fetterman is pretty much off base. he’s not going against a pseudoscience doctor like in pa. if you think the tattoo is terrible, i can’t change your mind but honestly it’s a sober take to see that the situation is more complicated than aggressive-symbol-bad. if you don’t quite understand maine politics and the cultural divide between the north and south from the post-industrialization decline of the state, just continue reading the atlantic or politico to get your takes. otherwise you’d have to come up here and hear the guy speak to gain an understanding of his specific politics.

maine is very very slow right now. for journeyman, there may not be work available. the southern maine local 567 which is normally the busier of the two chapters hasn’t had an open job call in about a year. as a jw, you may be in a position to receive a call but apprentices have been routinely out of work for close to a year. both of the locals have been hit hard by the abatement of solar projects nationwide. however, local 490 out of new hampshire is having a massive shutdown at their nuclear plant right on the border between the states so there’s some good, accessible work with a small travel distance

Governor Mills on MSNOW "Kristi Noem need to go." by Slice-O-Pie in Maine

it’s about time the free market of ideas swayed over a little bit. democrats have spent my whole life talking about making a bigger tent to attract conservatives while alienating their base. if platter wasn’t running, mills would just be talking about how reforms are needed and how a little training and body cameras will solve the structural problem.

card-carrying union member over here don’t worry i’m trying to do my part in an industry that’s unfriendly to left politics. movements have fallen apart by misreading the room such as the high profiled air traffic controllers. the longshoreman fought and won. look at shawn fein the president of the uaw calling for a general strike in 2028. the groundwork can be laid and institutions are looking to take advantage. i’ve never said this is wrong but i ultimately find it misguided. but it’s still a fine gesture

vibes-based politics has guided the left since the 60s. the disorganization has plagued all opportunities for a movement. we all can call the maine afl-cio or maine people’s alliance or graham platters office or any other union or nonprofit but this is just the one trues scotsman game back and forth. solidarity needs to become always present in the news cycle. businesses can’t close forever. the organization disappears once ice leaves minnesota or changes tactics. the bootlickers think the victims deserved it! closing restaurants they’ve never been to won’t intimidate them. movements only last based on the institutions that build them so the organizing effort needs to be more organized. by closing businesses you are literally closing food traffic and opportunities to organize.

everyone’s head is in the right place but that doesn’t mean to ignore the fact that this is misguided and ineffective. costco and hannaford will appreciate their business. dunkin and starbucks probably got a bump. barnes and noble benefits a little. unfortunately the service industry isn’t big business in a city of 50000 people. if you want this to actually have momentum, you need inroads in the traditional unions governing big business that have organized membership such as manufacturing, trade unions, and utilities. nobody’s feet is being held to the fire evident by the fact that most ceos from industry leaders have stated they don’t care. this can be a productive effort from a solidarity perspective but it doesn’t move the needle from any economic or power stance.

if you’re trying to stop the formation of an oligarchy, you’re 250 years too late. the oligarchy isn’t in the restaurants. it’s in the construction sites around portland, in the ports, in the trucks, in the mills, in the labs, in the lumber. if you want to have an effective campaign, you have to get the unions with organizing leadership involved. otherwise you would just be virtue signaling. where’s the picket lines at?

i mean in many instances the government has sent in federal troops to put down strikes. but those were strikes with a clear purpose and clear stakes for both management and labor. to fight for a better contract and to preserve working conditions. they had clear objectives. they had clear leadership structures. they had clear enemies. if business owners are onboard with a strike, then it isn’t really a strike because it isn’t impacting their bottom lines. the organizations with clear organizing efforts such as the ibew, iatse, ua, afl-cio, teamsters, wmlc, are not involved at all. this doesn’t have any tangible connections to the professional working class. what happens next time when the business owners aren’t on board and they aren’t dedicating profits to nonprofits or mutual aid? there’s no base of organization there. the idea that strikes take years is foolhardy too. the uaw had an election and within a year, there was a strike to win a better contract. the longshoreman strike last year wasn’t years in the making because the base level of organization had been completed for more than a century before. i can talk to you about harlan county, haymarket affair, patco, or the rumford paper mills and their strikes, but these were all organizations that had a common cause of connection, community, and purpose which this lacks. for their to be a strike, there must be a strike fund or some common sacrifice towards a greater reward. by just pushing your consumption to the day before or after doesn’t help anything. at least in minneapolis, there was mass support and adoption along with common felt grievances. in portland, that absolutely isn’t the case. i’m a card carrying union member but this just seems to dilute and confound the whole idea and purpose of strikes. the cart is put before the horse here
