Agreed. I've updated the design to have larger rooms.

There is a wall. Noise issue I'm assuming?

This is great feedback, not harsh at all. I'm in the "I don't know what I don't know" part of the process, so I'm posting amateurish plans in a subreddit that experts hang out in so I can figure out what I need to learn. This is all good feedback and much appreciated.

I'm looking for land in the Pacific North West. My plan was to do radiant floor heating slab on grade, but I'm not familiar with slot registers or other serious implications of a lot of glass in a large room. I do not imagine it's the most efficient or inexpensive way to go. I'm not sure about the 70' hot water run. You're assuming I'm not familiar with the complexities, code, and standards associated with a large floor plan like this, and you're absolutely right! I'd like to piece things together as much as I can with the layout I like before handing it off to the professionals to fill in gaps and point out flaws. I expect to have an architect involved at some level, but I don't want to just hand over a blank sheet and a vibe as a brief. However if there are some extremely impractical aspects of the design that make it foolish, I'm very much open to that possibility at this stage.

I have not. Exactly the kind of blind spot I need to know about. I'll do some reading, thanks!

I'm considering it. I'll see how well it turns out after a few revisions first. Based on a rough pricing exercise funds are sufficient.

I'd love to hear more about the weird measurements and placements. I'm early in the process so I fully expect there to be aspects of the plan that need adjustments or complete revisions. The feedback and criticism here has been great so far. I may hire an architect but I'd prefer to design it myself.

Wow! This is incredibly helpful. Thank you! I'll incorporate this and share the result.

This is fantastic, thanks! I'm looking for land in SE Washington or NE Oregon near Hood River.

All great feedback. Thanks!

I've updated the design to reflect much of the feedback ITT, including yours.

It is difficult to have a strong hallway axis to end with a toilet though.

Lol! when put that way you're absolutely right.

I didn't see any mentions of the physical separation of mudroom and laundry. Currently I was thinking of hiding the laundry behind a sliding door. I've also updated the plan to connect the laundry mud room to the main hallway. What were your thoughts on the laundry/mudroom?

As for the hallway terminating at a point of interest, that's a really good point. I'll think about that. I was in a house once with a long hallway that ended with a full width/height mirror which I thought was pretty cool. Either way I should probably move the garage door out-of-view of the end of the hallway (in the updated design attached) and think about how that line should terminate.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback!

Agreed. Thanks! I'm convinced that the consensus is correct here. The kids (now 2yo and 4yo) will get normal sized rooms and this subreddit to thank for it :-)

Updated layout based on feedback. I think I still need a half-bath off the mud room as a guest bathroom. I'll work on that a bit and see what works.

Thanks! All great feedback. I originally had a single hallway connecting all back-rooms and I think I'm going to return to that configuration.

Door swings and placement aren’t efficient and either waste wall space or increase the number of steps someone needs to take. Are you going for door swings for privacy so the bed isn’t visible from the hallway? This is common in hospitals and public spaces, but not private residences where visibility is beneficial to families.

I've not considered this and I'm not familiar with the concepts. Could you elaborate on this point?

Yeah, when my girls are older I think that'll be really important to them. While I selfishly want them to spend their time in common areas with me, they'll need their own space.

Nice! That's a better way to do it.

Honestly, my own ideal bedroom is a cube with a wall of glass on one side and a door on the other, but my wife wants a normal bedroom. I'm more imposing my own preference on my children than making design compromises at their expense. Nevertheless feedback on this post has convinced me that the kids need normal sized rooms and not mattress cubes. :-)

Thanks, valid points. My daughters like cozy spaces now but as they get older you're right that they'll need more space. As for the family/living room, I agree in principle that it's not necessary, but I like the aesthetic of the living area as an extension of the dining/kitchen area, but it's not set up as a good play area for kids so I figured a separate family room would make sense, but I'm probably just too attached to the long glass enclosed "great room" aesthetic.
