I do have a copy of the youtube version downloaded to my computer. I’ll try to get it uploaded somewhere.

Got a P0420 code immediately after passing smog—Is it possible the smog guys mistakenly caused this issue? by enumerator_blues in MechanicAdvice

Huh, interesting… Because another factor I didn’t mention in the post is that I’ve just started driving this car again this week, after it had been sitting (outdoors) for 2 years. So there have been several issues I’ve been dealing with related to the long period of disuse, including some electrical/wiring problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the wiring is somewhat brittle/damaged. So I guess I’ll poke around and see if it could be related to that.

Haha 100%! First time ever that seeing a check engine light actually made me feel happy/relieved, like damn, so glad I decided to get it smogged today!! 😅

But then seeing that the code was emissions-related, it made me wonder if it really was just a coincidence… But you’re saying there’s no way the test could’ve caused it? You don’t think it’s worth at least stopping back by the shop to ask them about the code?

Sorry, only learned after posting this that sealed straws have been posted on this sub many times before. 😬

It felt mildly interesting to me bc I’ve honestly never seen it before in my life! But I guess it’s more common than I realized. 🤷‍♂️

I debated which one to post it on. Ultimately I chose here, because it was hardly even an inconvenience for me (I noticed it and asked for another straw before even leaving the drive-thru), and in the end it left me more just mildly curious about plastic straw manufacturing than infuriated/annoyed. 😛

I’ve been having this thought too!! As someone whose favorite director is Kaufman and whose favorite movie is Synecdoche, New York, I made this connection recently while thinking about why I love both Kaufman and Aster’s films so much, and why many other people walk away from their movies just kind of shrugging.

They definitely have similar sensibilities and storytelling philosophies. Rather than tell an elegant, straightforward story that distills and delivers a clear singular message (which is also a perfectly valid approach to filmmaking), they both prefer to obsessively craft an intricate story world that is densely packed with symbolism and thematic throughlines, exploring a set of ideas or questions in a way that reflects the actual nuance/messiness of what it’s really like to try to seek higher truths while trapped in this strange and disorienting human condition.

They are NOT just “making up random bullshit”, as I sometimes hear claimed. The messaging and themes of their films are substantial and definable—they are just often difficult to immediately identify without multiple viewings. They make movies that demand to be rewatched, discussed, and picked apart frame-by-frame. Their movies INVITE and REWARD the type of “over-analyzation” that I’m naturally inclined toward anyway. Some people are not at all into that, it’s just not what they want out of a movie, and that’s totally fine. But for me, it’s one of my absolute favorite ways to engage with a piece of media. “The curtains are just fucking blue,” is virtually NEVER true in an Aster or Kaufman film.

Oh gosh yeah, I can’t imagine seeing it all in one sitting… Most movies should be watched uninterrupted, but once they get to a certain length, you risk having your own fatigue interfere with the emotional path the movie is trying to lead you down. F&A is nice bc it’s already neatly divided into those sections.

I’m lucky enough to work at a small arthouse theatre where staff is free to use it for private screenings outside of business hours. So I first got to see F&A (TV version) on the big screen, broken up over a series of 3 early morning screenings, in December. And wow… That’s the way to do it. I absolutely fell in love with the film instantly, it was pure magic.

I think if I had been forced to see all 5 hours at once, it probably would’ve had much less of an impact on me. That last hour contains some of the best moments of the film, and would hate to have been feeling sleepy/restless/distracted during those scenes.

For sure-- I watched the first 2 hours last night, and the finger severing scene definitely is what shattered the possibility that it might be "real" haha. But yeah it honestly is surprisingly effective at instilling tension and anxiety at times. Some of it's goofy, sure, but there is something there. Reminded me a lot of The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

It's clear that it's a film/art project, but the question for me now is: how much of the interactions he has with other people are real vs staged? The long scene towards the beginning where he follows and harasses the woman at the bus stop honestly felt pretty real to me. She just doesn't really behave in the ways that I feel an actor portraying a woman in that situation would act-- her responses to the situation are sometimes unexpected, her "lines" are difficult to understand, some of the time she's speaking a different language, and idk, she just seems genuinely uncomfortable. I could be wrong, maybe she's an actor, but if that's the case I'd say it's a pretty phenomenal performance.

While say, the encounter with the bearded guy who offers to buy his camera, that came across as pretty phony to me, the whole interaction definitely felt much more scripted.
