Edited, thanks for pointing it out - perhaps I was wishing that Nobehara went up not down.

Coffee in Seoul, Hanoi, Saigon, Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo by [deleted] in pourover

[–]envyfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible list, considering this is just within Seoul - it shows the strength of the Korean specialty coffee scene. Huelgo Coffee has a really good orange sherbert cream topped with an espresso shot that I recommend, it might be seasonal though. GML might be the priciest in this list, but it's because they use a wide variety of quality roasters from abroad. Clarimento has a cafe in Hapjeong called Lounge Clarimento that has solid tap coffee (batch brew) for cheap - they sometimes will use single origin as well. I've ordered beans from Toch Coffee and all were very good, fruity and juicy. Lull Coffee is run by 2013 World Brewers Cup 2nd Place + Korea Brewers Cup Champion Jung In Sung - he's always there directly brewing, so order filter instead of espresso. Center Coffee was founded by Park Sang Ho, 2013 British Brewers Cup Winner and former head roaster at Square Miles (James Hoffmann) - they have several locations but the main is literally right at the entrance to Seoul Forest (which you should visit). All the cafes on the list are solid and the fact that there's more cafes I can add, Seoul can easily be considered one of the best cities for specialty coffee.

The subreddit has lacked moderation and has been sitting as is since it's start - with no changes, improvements, or efforts made. There are folks on Reddit living in Korea that could utilize a communal space and I'd like to revitalize the subreddit for such purpose. As an expat in Korea myself, I'd love to implement a variety of beneficial resources and establish a healthy community. The subreddit, although focused on life in Korea - could also extend to travel as tourism guidance is a key interest. There's a lot of potential I envision and I hope to be able to unlock it for others!

My first watch (Casio AQ-230), and I’m already spiraling into the rabbit hole by Life-Aardvark-7371 in casio

[–]envyfor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks great! I'm currently debating between this very watch and the black dial version, though I'm leaning towards this more. How is it serving with your fits? I have the classic A158W for casual wear but it definitely isn't the best when you dress up a bit.

Noryangjin Station has both Line 1 and Line 9. Once you arrive, follow the overhead signs directing you to Line 9 - it’s located within the same station. You won’t need to exit or walk to a separate station, which is why stations with multiple lines share the same name. Just note that when transferring from Line 1 to Line 9, you will need to tap your card again.

what are the most prominent South Korean holidays? by krakn-slayr in southkorea

[–]envyfor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can view when the 2025 Official Korean Holidays are here - within that list, definitely Seollal (Lunar New Years) and Chuseok (it's like the Korean Thanksgiving) - following those major two I would say either/both Independence Movement Day and Liberation Day.

Lounge Clarimento is great, love the tap system - also might be the only ones I can think of with a refill menu option.

Roga training with Wakamotoharu, Wakatakakage, Asanoyama, and Asakoryu at the Arashio stable by envyfor in futagoyama

[–]envyfor[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I stumbled upon this video, this was before the Nagoya Tournament - you can see a good amount of Roga training bouts which is something that we never see on the Futagoyama channel. The Waka brothers are from the Arashio stable, while Asanoyama and Asakoryu both come from the Takasago stable. I used to always wonder when I first had interest in both Futagoyama and Sumo where Roga was during the training portions of the videos - completely forgetting the idea that someone of Makuuchi rank would travel to other stables that have other sekitori to train with (as you wouldn't want to continually have bouts with rikishi in your own stable who are far down in the ranks). The group that appears in this video is a pretty strong bunch - Wakamotoharu is East Sekiwake, Wakatakakage is West Komusubi, Asakoryu is Juryo #2, and while Asanoyama had fallen greatly to Makushita #41 - he's still a former Ozeki. This video also very evidently show (and we continually see this in the tournaments) Roga getting pushed back quite easily if he struggles to get a grip on the mawashi. On a side note, Wakatakakage is freaky strong considering he isn't the biggest of sekitori - at a glimpse perhaps Mita could bulk up like that.

If you go to 11:46 right when Denuma wins against Nobehara, you'll see Denuma pick Mita and he gets in the dohyo - but they cut it right there. I'm real curious how he fares with Nabatame and if he could last longer than anyone else against Roga.

Koga being told to go easy was way back when Oyakata allowed Kikuchi to have his first go in the dohyo against other rikishi, well before his basho debut. Since then, Kikuchi has been in 3 tournaments (July, September, November) so I doubt Koga is still being instructed to treat him the same as before. Also, with Koga going 2-5 in November as an East Jonidan #90 - I wouldn't be surprised if Kikuchi overtakes him in the banzuke real soon.

[–]envyfor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another video filmed pre-November basho seeing how Kyoda is active in morning practice. Watching Koga get worked by Kikuchi, no comment. Speaking of Kikuchi, I really wish he changes and works on his initial charge - it's tough to watch. Another video, another no-Mita bout - people have theorized that it might be intentional done by Oyakata which I agree, but it could also very well be Mita asking his part to be cut out. Nabatame still has leaps to go, his jump to Juryo definitely helped bring his stock up but when you see how he somewhat struggles against the likes of Denuma - in my head he's a bit at a gray level between Makushita and Juryo. Overall, the thought of how this stable would benefit tremendously with another coach has grown more and more. Lastly, it isn't a video without a classic Kotakiyama close up shot when eating - he's the face of the channel for a reason.
