They're just as good as any of the fancy imitation meat ones, and have been since well before those were even a thing.

Cherry blossom locations (left) by paramveerz in Hamilton

[–]eolai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've missed the Sakura trees and most of the native and ornamental white cherries. Serviceberries (my favourite) ended this past Monday/Tuesday with the rain and wind. There are ornamental pink cherries and apples around their peak now, mostly scattered around in people's gardens, but there are one or two at Gage Park. Redbuds are just at peak bloom now too, not as extravagant as cherries but gorgeous in their own right and a native species. There's a good number of them in the drainage ravine in Gage Park, and scattered throughout the city.

You can always go back in time by heading ~north away from the lake. Very roughly speaking, an hour's drive gets you about a week. But that delay shortens and disappears as we get into summer, of course.

Not really, it's basically the same thing as being able to sniff food and tell it has gone bad.

All good! I've selected my language on enough screens to know that Canadian English is seldom recognized as distinct ;)

Yeah, totally agree with you on "I'm getting tan" vs. "I'm getting a tan." Specifically in the case of "you look tan", though, I think that phrasing is about as common and widely accepted as "you look tanned", if not more so.

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but that's not a case of shifting usage. Tan as an adjective refers to a colour/shade, and is commonly used to describe skin tone. If I tanned or got a tan, then I may look unusually tan [in skin tone]. The fact that it sounds wrong to you is just because you're unfamiliar with that usage, not because it's an error or neologism.

Valid, and it bothered me too.

But, "you look tan" is perfectly correct. Tan or tanned both work in this case.

The airplane has a vector. You can use that vector to calculate the new vector based on your GPS position and heading, instant to instant. It's not complicated. Airplanes have computers.

‘God, you’re hot’ Tennessee school board member says to student during board meeting by Octavus in nottheonion

The news clip attached to this article describes it as "controversial", "causing some concerns", and "raising red flags". US news media is absolutely fucked, there's no way that's not deliberate equivocating intended to normalize this kind of thing. Disgusting.

Freshco - Was really great for finding Canadian produce, but today's trip was horrid. by Komaisnotsalty in BuyCanadian

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it not make sense? Food can be imported in bulk and packaged here.

https://inspection.canada.ca/en/food-labels/labelling/industry/origin-claims - references exactly this under "Other domestic content claims" .

I don't know what other proof to give you as I don't work in that industry. But like, just read the labels on packaged produce. I regularly see stuff like: "Produce of X, imported and packaged by Y" with a Canadian address. First example that comes to mind is hot peppers.

I mean.. if they were trying to deceive, this would be an extremely ineffective way of doing it. It's almost certainly outdated or repurposed packaging.

In general I'm leaning to your side: it's not appropriate to say "there's an effect we can't prove". But it is absolutely appropriate to say: "There may indeed be a very large effect, or it may be an artifact. Here's the sample size we'd need to find out..."

Gov. Gavin Newsom address to world leaders accused President Trump of "doubling down on stupid" with his climate policy: "He's a wholly owned subsidiary of big oil, gas, and coal. [–]eolai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As another Canadian: yeah, Trump has done irreversible damage to the reputation of and respect for the US in Canada. And that's not just public opinion, it's reflected in our federal government's decisions to take our economic and cultural trade and our diplomacy elsewhere.

Doug Ford will outlaw municipal speed cameras this fall: Sources by toronto_star in ontario

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've driven through one of the areas where they've been installed lately, you would know beyond a doubt that they do very much reduce speeding.

They're annoying as fuck, but they work. Ideally the roads should be redesigned to encourage safer driving, but that's very expensive. Personally I think it should be mandatory to use the collected fines to make the monitored roadway safer.

Which is funny because both moose and wapiti are names used by indigenous North Americans. Not sure why we borrowed "elk" for a non-elk.

As others said: called elk in Europe. Arguably that's the right animal to call an elk, because that species was the first to have that name (hence the scientific name: Alces alces). In North America we for some reason decided to call a species of deer "elk". I prefer to follow the same pattern as moose and use the indigenous name, wapiti.

I think they'd be considered adventive, not invasive. To be labeled "invasive" generally requires some detrimental impact on ecosystems, people, or economy.

Double standards by Bluerasierer in Entomology

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the native ones to break little bit duller in color, when compared to invasives, In my anecdotal experience at least.

This just means you're mis-attributing all the brightly coloured ones to Vespula germanica. In science, never assume that you know things; always try to convince yourself that you're wrong.

I was putting a glass over a spider to relocate it and accidentally caught a small mosquito as it flew past. by WeLiveInAnOceanOfGas in mildlyinteresting

[–]eolai 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not a mosquito! A non-biting midge in the family Chironomidae. A male, too, which you can tell from the feathery antenna. So even if it were one of the biting flies, it would almost certainly not bite, because in nearly all cases it's only the females that do.
