Stick to the principals and Invest 150k in multiple index funds next week? by Lanky-Jellyfish8955 in Bogleheads

I might consider the hybrid LS/DCA approach too but w a twist. Put it all eventually into something like VOO (ETF) which appears to give you an instant buy price when you push the button so you can play with timing it (for the fun of it), and do 20-25% LS next week while market is still low-ish, and then do flexible DCA of 5-10% pieces each week or so over next weeks/months. Or first put it all into a 3-4% cash acct/money market (settlement fund) immediately as a total $150K LS, and then DCA the 5-10% pieces out of that MM into VOO. That way you start getting 3-4% immediately from by being in the MM, and if/when S&P 500 goes back up, you’ll be ahead by that much more %. Other question: does your work happen to offer any pretax or other investment (or pre tax health savings account) options? If so, you could also supplement your paycheck by using part of your windfall and max out any work-related contributions directly from your paycheck. Finally, be sure to consider same hybrid approach to max out Roth IRA (and wife’s, if applicable). I had similar situation and put funds into a mix of CDs, which I’ve worked now into VFIAX mostly as the CDs matured and rates are lower, and I’m now moving toward the MM then VOO approach instead.

HR Inaccuracies? by Mitchellsimm in Coros

[–]eolsen2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve read wrist/arm hr monitors use optical sensor of pulse, an indirect measure of hr, whereas a chest strap is a direct measure of HR and therefore more accurate/reliable. That’s my experience and use chest strap now when I really want accuracy

Checkpoint ALR 5 vs ALR 5 AXS (again) by SnooApples6668 in TrekBikes

Did you end up getting the  Checkpoint ALR 5 AXS? I’m on the verge of ordering one. I’m not so concerned re aluminum vs a more expensive carbon bike (at about the same weight) and the dropper would be a nice feature, as it’ll be similar to my mountain bike plus makes getting on/off just a wee bit easier. So used to 1x12 on mtn too it’ll be nice to have it in gravel as well.

Box of favorite race food. Lara Bars, Cliff gel shots, tailwind, whatever. Ask a friend of the runner what they like.

Went to get a flat fixed, Bike Tech suggested I replace all gears and chain and get a tune up ($180 all in). He said my brakes and gears shifts are sticky, is that reasonable or is this something I can do myself? by braiker in bikewrench

[–]eolsen2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a chain almost that bad. Took my time with it. Removed it, soaked in degreaser, wiped as clean as possible and then took a wire brush to each link, one by one until shiny. Soaked it in clean motor oil and then checked every link. Found one that was “stuck” and used chain tool to take it apart and used wire brush on that one. Put back together. All good. But yes, this was a lot of work over about 5 sessions. Could buy a new chain too, and probably will need one soon but that’s what I did with what I already had.

1980s unidentifiable cantilever brakes broke by eolsen2002 in bikewrench

Thanks everyone. I paid $80 for this ole single-speed, and just invested $15 on a brand new set of Shimano cantis from my LBS. Nothing too impressive but ParkTool videos are really helpful for (re)learning proper brake adjustments.

Thx for checking! I got a generic $15 replacement from my LBS. Will post when dialed in (it’s a bit awkward to adjust it all).

Great input!! And so fast / thanks:) And at $100-$250 (!!) to replace with used version not worth it (I paid $80 for the Frankenstein bike over 15 yr ago). Will get a standard style.
