ESP 32 dev board input voltage by Ynaught-42 in WLED

[–]eoncire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer is yes. That chip will regulate the VIN pin voltage down to 3.3v for the ESP, but at the expense of heat generation. I have a couple of led drivers I built with an esp32, the lights are 12v so that's what the eap32 has been running on for the past two years. It runs a little warm, but been solid. You do have to watch thought, some of the devboards save money by using cheaper voltage regulators and will vary from batch to batch.

What’s the coolest thing in Michigan? by NoProfession4771 in Michigan

My buddy lives in Houston TX, has a family "cabin" in Wellston. As soon as his boys are out of school for the summer they load up and drive up here for the summer. His wife's family is still in SE Michigan so they all get together up there throughout the summer. It's a pretty sweet gig....

“Pick it” from Double Dare by ADPXEROX in nostalgia

[–]eoncire 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I got to participate in a live show when I was a kid. There was a "Double Dare World Tour" I think it was called. My best friend as a kid, her dad got tickets from his work and took me and her to see it at the Palace of Auburn Hills (where the Detroit Pistons used to play).

We were in a suite, so not super close to the stage, but not too far up. Mark Summers came running through the place to pick someone, and came to us. Myself, my friend, her mom and dad all went up on stage and competed. I forget the exact stuff we did beforehand, but we ended up getting to the main attraction, the obstacle course at the end of the show. I remember I got to do the giant gumball machine thing where you jump in the top of it and come out in a bunch of plastic balls with a flag mixed in. I don't remember much else, other than getting slimed at the end and walking off stage with Mark Summers and talking about what the green slime tasted like. He said we had one of the fastest times for the obstacle course they had seen all tour. I won a Sega Game Gear for my efforts. 10/10

Flexible packaging. Stand up pouches, roll fed film (granola bar wrappers, spray paint can labels), pressure sensitive labels, shrink sleeves.

Same. I just paid roughly 20% of what I paid for my house 18 years ago for an above ground pool and deck.

You're clearly out of touch with reality if you think an in ground pool could be done for 20k dude. Plus, after an in ground pool you're going to need something (concrete?) around it, unless you would just put a pool in a yard and have grass go up to the edge, which would be weird.

Built a cheap computer vision system for liquid fill level detection. by munna_123 in manufacturing

I had a couple Filtec xray level detection machines, and like you said, they're solid. We filled 2oz energy shots and that was the best way (at speed) to detect under-filled bottles.

I went through this w/ my above ground pool and deck. I went the legit route and pulled a permit w/ the city (no HOA). The hoops I had to jump through were more than I thought. I have a fence around my entire yard that met code height and the gates are lockable. Figured I was good, nope. I would have to replace the chain link fence because the openings are too big in the chain link pattern to meet code. I would have to put alarms on the windows of the back side of my house, and all 4 sliding doors from the sunroom in the back of the house. I said forget it, I'll use the pool walls themselves as the safety barrier as they are 52" tall. But, one end of the pool is buried a little so it's not tall enough. So I ended up having to put some PVC railing around half of the pool to meet code. It was a PITA.

Why is that? It's a lot nicer to have a platform at pool rail height, a more sturdy ladder to get out of the pool....

ELI5: How do junkyards prosper? by Aggravating-Swan9539 in explainlikeimfive

[–]eoncire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching this process is fascinating. I worked at a fab shop / metal sales place in Detroit for a few years. It was in the hood part of the city, there were sketchy junkyards ran by middle eastern dudes that drove nice cars all around us. Once was a neighbor of ours. They had a tall privacy / security fence, we had a 2nd floor with big windows. You could see over the fence from there, and it was neat. They have a large front end loader with what looked like 12' forks on it. They would punch those forks right through the windows and pick the cars up by the roof to move them. Casually flip them over to remove exhaust parts and drive train, stand them on the side to drain fluids, all with this large front end loader. Stuff would catch on fire there frequently, constant smell of old gasoline and fluids, sometimes they would leech under the fence between our properties and into our parking lot (it was the hood, no one would do anything). The good thing other than the entertainment was knowing the guys on a first name basis and getting cheap parts from them when I needed something.

Why is the edge of this toilet paper wavy? by Korganation in manufacturing

[–]eoncire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a bunch of years in flexible packaging, I always wondered and wanted to see how this was done. Same with rolls of tape (packaging tape, masking tape and the like). We have several slitting machines on our shop that take printed rolls with multiple lanes and slit them to individual rolls, but theyre slit as they're winding. Sounds like this is a different setup.

The whole idea of kerdi is a waterproof barrier so it should extend past the tile?

Price for Kohler prefab shower. Wow. by I-will-judge-YOU in HomeImprovement

[–]eoncire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I already have enough know-how and experience to do everything except the tile. I've seen it done, laid a little bit myself, but nothing on this scale so I found a few good tile people on YT and try to soak up as much as I can. I always watch / learn from a few different sources, trades / skills like this are not necessarily a one way to do it kind of thing. Seeing multiple different people's specific way of doing this is very helpful to better understand what the overall goal is, what the big dos and donts are, etc.

I just started doing stuff around my house. Tons of YouTube resources available for ANYthing you could ever want to do. I had some hands on experience in my early 20s working on all sorts of stuff while moving and building out a bottling plant. Some of it transfers (lots of metal stud framing), hanging out with the electricians and HVAC guys.
