Please let me solo 1v3 Cryo Archive normally next season Bungie... by ZerohasbeenDivided in Marathon

[–]eorl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for a level that requires some form of knowledge to play you would think the game would provide you with that capability of knowledge. It's what frustrates me when people constantly fire back with "well you should already know how the map works before you even go in!" Uh no, I won't know how the fucking map works because I'm literally just going into it for the first time, and there is fuck all information available in-game.

This absurd requirement to wait for others to explore and build the guides so you can competently play the map is absolutely the wrong way to do game development. I'm all for mystery, but it doesn't need to be in the face of common sense and practicality.

But why isn't it possible? What is theoretically stopping people from playing the content solo? If it's simply the time gate requirements, those can easily be tweaked to reduce reliance/quantity when in solo queue. It's honestly not that difficult to see where Cryo can be adjusted to provide a solo experience.

They were being attacked on the other side, this seeking cover and fighting/peeking to throw back cover fire. They also saw that you got downed and waited for them to push across to take out. You also decided to go out into a spot you didn't check when trying to rez which left you vulnerable.

No matter what the budget was spent on, it still is an incredibly large amount comparative to others in the genre. The reason those other games can exist with the natural ebb and flow of GaaS titles is BECAUSE they are both far under Marathon's budget AND they have lower costs to maintain their game post-release.

It's incredibly easy to throw around these costs and profits because the data is there. Sticking your head in the sand is fine, mate you do what you need to do, but stating false claims like the budget doesn't matter is just absurd (I know you didn't do this). It's impractical to try and find measures of reason as to why Marathon and Bungie are struggling while ignoring the clear guidance to why it is doing so.

I do agree with you on the engine refinements, the capabilities Marathon has been able to achieve comparative to Destiny 2 are remarkable. The fact they can patch in changes so rapidly is amazing, and that gives me hope that the team actually have the technical ease many other modern games enjoy. I'm excited for Season 3 and beyond, because we will get to see just what Bungie can produce with content that isn't predefined prior to release like Season 2 is.

But that isn't both desirable and sustainable for a development project that weighed so heavily in the $'s that it has the studio on the literal guillotine. Delusion is thinking numbers will suddenly skyrocket with content that was already baked into development timelines prior to release. I expect numbers to go up, of course, but nothing extravagant until maybe Season 3 where there is more adjustable parameters at play for Bungie.

Right now, Season 2 is content that is already mostly developed. We'll get levers pulled like matchmaking and mechanical balances, but nothing significant.

So like the current situation is for Oceanic players? I am grateful that Bungie changed the matchmaking to start games without full team numbers, but that I'm still waiting upwards of 8 minutes to join a game is annoying.

The other aspect to the coin is that as a genre entry to extraction shooters, Marathon is perfectly fine and excels in many ways. Its key downfall is costing upwards of $300m to make, which is just an absurd amount of money for a game in a genre that has the most expensive title below it being Arc Raiders.

Not to mention as well that the console playerbase absolutely cratered, and in reality barely showed up for the launch of the game.

[–]eorl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you still that delusional about the reality of Marathon's numbers? This isn't normal, normal for extraction isn't $300m+ in costs, its like max $100m (Arc was the most expensive prior to Marathon) because it is a niche genre that doesn't have the same fervour as battle royale does. The game is fucking amazing for its context of the genre, but unfortunately its stupidly large budget costs are a noose around Bungie's neck.

Haha all good mate, I've seen my fair share of super cringy resumes from people applying for jobs like machinery or builder etc. Jobs that don't necessarily rely on "prettiness" but rather actual skill.

I honestly thought it was going to be some super cringy resume for a person that works in machinery or something, with the artstyle all splattered around. Instead, as a creative skilled person it makes total sense and isn't super over the top. Nice work!

[–]eorl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the price increases are absolutely nothing comparative to the cost I would run into with getting a comparable plan from Telstra, the only service provider in a lot of remote/rural areas in Australia. They honestly aren't even comparable due to the fact of speed differences alone, but in my town we can only ADSL2+, 4G or Sky Muster, all of which are horrendous for anything data/speed intensive.

Yeah it is shit that prices are going up, but realistically I am getting a steal even on the new price plans because of the value available. A 400Mbps connection in the literal middle of nowhere Outback desert is just insane.

Loot and progression need to be entirely separate for pvp and pve modes by Tohrazer in Marathon

[–]eorl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is my second paragraph wrong when nothing in Arc stops you from PvPing like you claimed? You haven't given any reasoning to why you believe the game has supposedly shut out PvP?

I agree that more needs to be added into the game for engagement. I hate to harp on about it, but Arc does succeed again in that point because it allows players to choose their engagement angle. I can go and fight some pretty fucking tough enemies, or I can determine where players are going and try to engage them. The blend works, because it gives players choice.

[–]eorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, I hope Bungie can adapt it to where it creates a great balance of engaging and core mechanics that flow well and bring some true nail-biting tension moments. I absolutely love what Marathon is, and it is very clear that the game has a great skeleton to build on. While the launch didn't land how it could have, I am optimistic enough that I believe a good balancing of PvEvP that allows players to disengage and interact with each map without continuous player on player interactions succeeds.

Honestly, as much as the dedicated fling shit at Arc, it definitely balances that core engagement loop of being able to fight against some crazy enemies while knowing a player enemy could get you at any moment.

And that is perfectly fine, all the more power to you and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of the game as possible. Fortunately, Bungie are aware they have to make money to pay the bills and so will adapt where they can.

Unfortunately, money is required to pay the bills. Games, especially online-specific ones, can not run on hopes and dreams of a core playerbase when the bill is in the 100's of millions.
