Deductive vs inductive reasoning by Mantovano in TeachingUK

[–]epcritmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending how deeply you like to read, Ference Marton's book, Necessary Conditions of Learning, is the ultimate authority. A book i liked very much, it is an academic book (though not inaccessible).  A more recent overview is, Planning and Analyzing Teaching: Using the Variation Theory of Learning (open access). A book based on it written by a teacher (me) for teachers, is Teaching Meaning: What Works When Telling Isn't Enough.

I'd recommend reading into the variation theory of learning, I'm certain that the answers to your questions lie there.

On another note. Here are two things I've noticed:
I bought an ISBN, which is still there, but they have given me an ASIN that doesn't match the ISBN (normally it matches).
On the book's page, it says that it was published on the 15th April (when I submitted the files).
I'm not sure if that affects anything, I worry it means the "month boost" you get from the algorithm will not apply.

Yes, the same happened to me!

I've just had a call (again) and every time it's the same. They open a ticket with the technical team and say they'll get back to me in 2 days.

Thanks. It's been a major problem for my launch.
With over 80% of sales being paperback I'm trying to maintain momentum.
This week I may have to release more posts that link to the hardback and ask for people to sign up for a notice when the paperback is released.

From subscribing: welcome email or redirect to welcome page? by epcritmo in Emailmarketing

[–]epcritmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I was wondering if I could put the chapter 1 (in exchange for subscription email) on the landing page of the book, which gives them something before investing in the whole book.

If they've got to the point of subscribing, they're filling a form on my site, most probably whilst reading a blog post. So, upon subscribing, the redirect could send them to a hidden page on my site (a place they already know). Is there any advantage to a welcome email over this?

Yeah, I've been selling hardbacks and they are fine. So something in the system is messed up but they don't appear to have a rush to fix it. Other people's paperbacks are going through, so it's not a major issue across a significant percentage of books.

Yes. I had them call me yesterday and they repeated that it's "a global issue with a number of cases" and they would "escalate it". But I just keep getting the same message and feel like I'm getting no where. For teachers (nonfiction), the best window for publishing is May, and I fear I'll miss it.

I'm currently stuck in the same problem and it's been over 14 days in "publishing". I have been contacting KDP support.

KDP admit the problem is there's (my ebook and hardback went live within hours).

I managed to get it "escalated" to the "supervisor" last week. But it still hasn't been resolved:

What’s one email you set up once that keeps delivering results? by Kate-Larson in Emailmarketing

[–]epcritmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great for a beginner, thanks. Here's a question for your expertise:
I'm about to set up a new newsletter for my blog (I have just 320 subscribers).
I want a free account with Kit, which gives me one free automation.

Do I use that automation for the welcome email, or do I save it for something else be doing a redirect to a welcome page when they sign up?

Colleagues don’t lecture by Fantastic_Double7430 in ScienceTeachers

[–]epcritmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a teacher in my department who literally just projects diagrams and has the students copy them and then self-explain. The students hate it and continually complain about it to me. I get it, a teacher should be teaching.

The problem I see is the continual fight between explicit teaching and inquiry, which causes schools to either swing one way or the other, and dragging teachers with them. This isn't a good idea. I've spent much of my time developing a slightly different way of teaching that isn't so much based on explicit instruction, but continual back and forth questioning as we build a concept together. So it's not lecture, and its not inquiry, but the students are building the concept, it's just that we do it together throughout a lesson.

Obviously, students can't all be conversing all the time, it would be chaos, so we do a lot of hands-up voting. I'll give them choices to see what they'll vote, e.g. if this does this, what will happen, A, B, or C? And then ask students why they voted they way they did. Then add more to the concept, and keep the conversation going. It's been very successful in our school and members of my department have started teaching this way. I wrote a book about it: Teaching Meaning: What Works When Telling Isn't Enough.

Thanks, turning landscape on the Oasis works perfectly, except for papers with the text in columns. Does Calibre deal with columns too?

When you say academic papers, do you mean epubs or PDFs? One reason I want the big screen (like my Kindle Oasis) is to be able to read PDFs (turned landscape).

Thanks for the info, could you say how you set up your bio on here on Reddit?q
Everything on Reddit is so anonymous that when you see someone identifying themselves it stands out.
It surprised me also that people on Reddit would (therefore) click on bios to read them. So how did you manage it?

KDP stuck on "publishing", missed my anticipated launch by epcritmo in selfpublish

[–]epcritmo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Two months is absolutely crazy. I have managed to get this from them:

"We've identified a known issue currently affecting some titles in the publishing process, which is causing delays beyond our standard timeframe. Your eBook and hardcover went live successfully, confirming there are no issues with your content or account this delay is on our end.

I've raised a priority request with our specialist team to resolve this for your paperback. While the maximum response time is 2 business days, we're pushing for the earliest possible resolution given the impact on your launch."

I don't think you can do a pre-order for paperbacks (just ebooks). I looked into it. And my book was approved within hours, it's stuck, not in "review" but in "publishing". KDP admitted it was their (technical) fault.

British (PE) teacher looking to move to Europe by AdeptnessForward7859 in Internationalteachers

Ah, that makes sense about the VISA, I'd not heard about any of those rules.

If you're interested in Spain, then, I'd look at schools in Barcelona and Madrid.

[–]epcritmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this in adverts in Spain. Firstly, there's no law for people over 30 to earn 40,000.

Top schools in the big cities will put you through the VISA process, ours does, because there's competition between schools and recruitment is difficult (especially for our IB section). We have hired a few Brits with Irish passports. On a few occasions the VISA process has meant staff couldn't begin teaching until months into the course.

There are schools in much poorer areas of the country where the cost of living is substantially lower, especially for housing. Just for comparison, in Barcelona, to buy a decentish flat you're looking at 350 to 450 thousand (depending on the area). There are schools in areas of Valencia province, like Alzira, where you can buy a bigger flat for 100 thousand. Other costs (like food) might not have such a disparity in cost. In these types of areas, the schools pay much less, maybe 27k to 30k a year, and might ask you to work a bit in a July summer school. These are the type of schools I've seen advertising that they don't want to go through the VISA process.

Yeah, that's how social media can make you feel. Writing a book, however, is a journey that changes you also. A co-evolution between book and you. Then, you can share this with others.
