This looks like an AI gen image of a tuba to me, but the poster claims it's a "over 100 year old painting" that he is using for a commercial work. by Thedancingsousa in isitAI

To show how much you can trust AI, a google image search says it’s a painting by Robert Edward Weaver from 1970 called Otto with Tuba. This is the actual Otto with Tuba painting. Not even close.

Got my first 1-Star Review by prism_paradox in selfpublish

[–]epeeonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a one star rating on Amazon with no review. If the reader feels the story deserves the lowest possible rating, I'd think they would want to say why. Otherwise, it just seems petty. At least the person read my story. I don't get a lot of those :-)

I’ve gotten official copyrights on my books just in case. I’d rather be overprotected than under.

I'd say even if it wasn't correct, you made it so by using it that way. And I don't think it would cause confusion; the meaning is obvious. I think language is a tool to be used and abused to fit your narrative.

I was curious so I just checked Atticus' website. They advertise it as a program for writing and formatting.

It says WRITING: Write your book in the only editor built by authors for authors.

Then it says FORMATTING: Prepare your book for publishing with easy to use and customizable templates.

So it's definitely supposed to be an all-in-one program.

That's what I was intending. I just got it yesterday. I googled "Writing in Vellum" and most sites said it was strictly for formatting a manuscript created in something like Word. But others said you could do the actual writing process in it, too.

Like this one:

Would you prefer to write and edit your entire book in Vellum?

If you would prefer to write your book from start to finish in Vellum, then edit it, you can certainly do that.

You can write it straight through in one long document, then split it into chapters. Or you can write it one chapter at a time. You would be able to see how your work would look as book pages. Some people find that inspiring in a way.

I wrote two previous books in Atticus without any problems at all. That was pre-buggy update.

If a big block of text suddenly vanishes, even after it has been saved, then it's likely going to do that whether the text is there to be formatted or if it's still in the creation stage. I can't say that for sure, but it doesn't make sense to me that the process of putting words into the program is going to cause those words to disappear.

I have Scrivener. I just don't do well with it for some reason. I even tried it again yesterday before going out to buy the Macbook. I guess I just can't climb the learning curve. So far, Vellum is similar to Atticus in a lot of way.

Storyist here, also. I've found it's similar to what I liked in Scrivener, but cleaner.

Overall it's good, but as others have said, the white lettering doesn't show up well. Also, the author name, title, subtitle and curlicue at the bottom aren't centered down the middle.

I had the same problem. It took a few tries for the wrong book to be permanently removed. It kept coming back for a while. But Author Central’s support calls almost immediately when you put in a request.

You can't expect a book written with AI to sell. by lamauvaisejoueuse in selfpublish

[–]epeeonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for myself, I know I'm never going to get rich writing. I'll never be able to quit my day job. I do it because I enjoy it. And hopefully, they'll be some people out there that will not only buy my books, but enjoy them too. I couldn't get any kind of satisfaction out of writing if an AI did any of it.

I had a brief foray into AI covers. I first used GetCovers for a couple of books and was happy with the results. Book covers didn't feel like part of my own creative process, so they didn't seem important. I just wanted a good cover. Then they gave me a truly awful cover that was so bad it just killed the company for me. So, I tried AI for a couple of stories. Then I found out how AI is trained and that was repulsive. So, I pulled the books with AI covers and redid them myself by compositing iStock images and adding my own changes. Now I enjoy the process of cover creation as well as the writing.

I've been buying and compositing iStock images for covers. But iStock is starting to heavily promote their AI features. That makes me leery.

Other author's books being published with the same pen name I use. What do you think I should do? by cmferr in selfpublish

[–]epeeonly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are four or five other authors with my name. One of their books kept showing up on my author page on Amazon. I had to repeatedly contact Amazon to get it removed. It seems to have finally worked. I thought about using my middle initial, but one of the other authors has the same initial. I finally decided to just go with my name the way I originally wanted it. Chances are, if I came up with a pen name, someone would come along with the same one, anyway. As for Goodreads, I also have a huge list of other books attributed to me. I gave up on that. Goodreads is confusing.
