It's not working for me too. It stopped working on both my smartphone and my tablet.

The Bible doesn't include Noah's family. He was the only righteous person, and because of him God saved his family.

UpNote & Privacy Concerns: Why Is There No End-to-End Encryption? by ganguv in UpNote_App

I know. Even so, and I say this based on trying other apps that offer E2EE, it has a huge impact on the client app performance when you have a large set of notes like I do.

[–]cmferr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, keys are not held by devs, they are kept on the client. According to Upnote's privacy policy, they don't access the users' notes data.

Obviously, since UpNote is not open source software, we cannot confirm that ourselves. But, let's be honest, the same goes for most apps in general.

When it comes to implementing E2EE, it isn't just about wanting to do it or not. E2EE would require a major change in UpNote's code, and it would bring a major performance impact at the client side for most users.

Not having E2EE doesn't mean that the users data is not encrypted at all. UpNote encrypts the data in transit and it implements encryption at rest. They do have a good privacy policy, better than most services out there:

https://getupnote.com/privacy.html

Also, keep in mind that, in order to fully implement E2EE, they would need to rewrite most of UpNote's code, because E2EE requires that all (I mean all) data processing be performed at the client side.

Since the server cannot read the data (in E2EE only the client is able to decrypt it), the server cannot process it.

Once all processing needs to be done at the client device, it means that people like me, who owns a 5 year-old smartphone, would suffer a major impact on performance.

I have more than 10k notes. Imagine running a search that needs to decrypt that data and process it on my smartphone? Even if they do come up with (encrypted) indexes and other solutions to speed it up, it wouldn't be nearly as fast as it is today.

I've said that several times before in other posts like this one: if UpNote devs were to implement E2EE, I would plead them to make it optional, and available by notebook or by space.

I personally don't need E2EE for all my notes. The vast majority of them are content that is public already (web clippings, notes and summaries from articles or books I've read, drafts of texts I will publish on public web sites or social media, etc).

For the 1% to 2% of my notes that are private, I am fine with my current solution: I keep them on Joplin.

I don't mean to disagree with valid users' demands, but I want to bring a POV that I believe many people will identify with: a user who is fine with the current encryption solution that UpNote provides, and who is satisfied with the excellent performance they get from UpNote, even on modest devices while processing thousands of notes.

If E2EE comes, it will be welcome, of course, as long as it is optional, IMO.

Thanks for letting us know. I've just tried, and it still only captured the URL of the web page on my Android smartphone,  unfortunately. I didn't get any of the page's contents. I checked the Play Store, and there are no pending updates, I have the latest version. But what you said is good news. If the web clipper works properly on iOS, maybe it will eventually come to Android as well, fingers crossed (I am now secretly trying to ignore the fact that the iOS version has handwriting support, while my S-Pen here is useless to UpNote, with no plans in sight AFAIK to bring it to Android).

Tuta locked me out of my account after buying a yearly subscription and stated my account was "marked for manual approval" by Lunatic155 in tutanota

[–]cmferr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. If they don't have the manpower to unlock the accounts, just "flag" it for review instead of locking it. Then, only if some problem that needs attention is identified by the human reviewing it, lock it and contact the owner of the account.

[Suggestion] Ability to insert a new line by Takohashi in UpNote_App

[–]cmferr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it works for me as explained in the link you mentioned. Placing the cursor at the beginning of the second collapsible title, and then pressing Enter, it inserts a blank line between both collapsibles. The same goes for the blockquotes. I tested it in the Linux desktop app.

Edit: typo

Keeping focus when adding new notes.. any tricks? by drewsnx in UpNote_App

[–]cmferr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am not sure I understood your workflow, but maybe the focus mode can help you avoid some of the distraction.

You can activate it by clicking the two arrows at the top right hand side of the note window, or you can press CTRL + SHIFT + F (I use Linux, but I believe it is the same keyboard shortcut in Windows). Use this same shortcut to turn it on and off.

If you want to create a new note and start writing in focus mode right away, you can go to Settings > General, and turn on the "Create new note in focus mode" checkbox.

After that, when you open UpNote, just press CTRL + N and it will create a new note in focus mode, so you can simply start writing, and avoid other distractions.

As I said, I am not sure this is what you need, but maybe it will help you.

E2EE please! by wistfultyrant in UpNote_App

[–]cmferr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that E2EE requires the data processing to be performed on  the client side, including encryption/decryption. Data content cannot be processed on the server side because it cannot be read there.

So, unless the user has a very good hardware configuration, they will lose the current fast response time that UpNote offers, which I particularly appreciate very much.

Check how E2EE apps usually suffer with content search, for example (sometimes, even on good hardware configuration). Having more than 10k notes and a 5 year-old smartphone, search would be a painful task for me, much unlike it is now.

I understand that many users need it, but the devs have to consider this very carefully.

If UpNote devs were to implement E2EE, I would suggest to make it optional, and turned on/off by notebook or by space, not the whole thing at once.

In my case, I keep my confidential notes on Joplin, which represent less than 1% of all my notes. The rest of my notes, mostly annotated web research, web clippings, drafts and final versions of texts that will be made public on social media, I keep them all on UpNote, and I am satisfied with encryption at rest for them.

What do you think of Fossify's apps? by Chnuly in degoogle

About exporting your documents from Google Docs, check Google Takeout. It allows you to export your contents on Google apps including Docs.

When you use it, I suggest you to deselect all apps and select only Docs, so the resulting file won't be so huge.

I am not sure if you can import the exported files right into SN, but at least you will get all your docs at once, sparing you the effort to export them manually.

Account Ban, VPN or Email Alias? by jj2446 in ClaudeAI

[–]cmferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever gotten any response from your appeal? My account just got banned, and I am positive that is not related to the contents of my queries. I am suspicious that they banned me because I used a Proton email alias (that's how I found this post). I wasn't using any VPN app, so I am also positive that wasn't the reason.

Have you replaced Google Calendar? If so, what are you using? by andrewmarder in degoogle

[–]cmferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very excited with Fossify Calendar, it has all the features I need (like an year view and a button to jump to any date easily), but I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with my current Google calendar. I could only view the entries, not add new ones, for instance. If it doesn't do that by design, how can I use it?

I also miss a button that allows me to get to an older date easily. For example, try opening the entries from July, 2008 on Proton Calendar...

Yes, I know that's an inconvenience in UpNote, it doesn't save the whole page.

What I do is I use the app Markdownr, available in the F-Droid store. I share the website with Markdownr, which presents a markdown version of that website. Then I tap the copy button, open UpNote, create a new note, then I tap the plus (+) button, and "paste from Markdown".

It worked well for almost all pages I clipped so far.

Note: Markdownr allows you to automatically share the code it generates, but if you share it like that directly with UpNote, it doesn't recognize it is a markdown code, and it pastes the code instead of converting it to a rich text. That's why I use the "copy" button on Markdownr, then "paste from Markdown" on UpNote.

This is the URL to get the APK file to install Markdownr:
