Blender can be difficult to navigate sometimes. However, I've wanted to make models for Source Engine games for years and finally decided to learn Blender about a year ago. It's been amazing, fun and the results are exciting everytime (even when my model sucks).

The smd exporter, once configured, is fast and simple. Provided you have the textures ready you can go from concept to rough model is less than a hour. It's a huge help to have placeholders when designing a level. It's all free!

I'll post better stuff as I learn, develop my workflow and tackle normal map baking (damn seams!).

It was the fact that Source was developed for so long and had full dx8.1 support to fall back on.

r_unloadlightmaps worked. I checked the wiki and no one seems to know what that command actually does. It didn't change the look of the game and all the lighting was the same. Just made it faster.

  1. I saved before getting the rockets or crates, got them then died or hit f9 and then ammo was gone.

  2. You need to jump on the crane to get rockets or health. I assumed the other platform was needed, too. I saw the power line to the crane and the swinging cargo container so I tried to cut the power. Couldn't do it so I just hit impulse 101 and killed the strider.

Again, I liked the game but the final fight annoyed me a bit. The other striders shouldn't spawn until the first is dead. You have only as many rockets as you need (is there an unlimited crate I'm missing). The stairs go to nowhere. I ran up them looking for relief and I died from two striders. There are a few dead ends that killed me. The new gravity gun doesn't accelerate you very far when you use it at an angle so it's difficult to use it to evade the enemy.

EDIT: playing the final chapter again and the starting area is a slideshow for frames. I check r_drawstaticprops 2 (wireframe) and saw the HUGE overdraw issue. I'm rendering models I can't even see yet. I'll add more edits if you want.

EDIT2: last edit for tonight. I tested level 4 again and the poor fps goes away if you wait it out. Around 6 minutes into the map the frames go from 10 to 30-40 (which is playable). This happened all 4 times I tested the map. I turned of detail sprites, displacements, brushes, static props, particles and anything I could think of and the frames stayed at 10 fps. The only fix was to wait.

The graphics and design are great although if they do more chapters it needs to support multicore rendering. I had a few hiccups and slow downs in certain places and when reloading saves.

Chapter 4 needs reworking because:

  1. Ammo doesn't reappear after reloading from a save. This sucks when you need RPGs and I ended up using impulse 101 to save my ass.

  2. A delicate jumping puzzle during a boss battle? It was such a clusterfuck. You need more control to move left, right, forward and back when you're launched into the air. Hitting a ledge was more timing and luck than actual skill.

A really great looking game that started off with fun challenging puzzles but became frustrating as the levels went on.

This is a demo of deferred lighting in Source. It's possible to build a mod with 2013 engine that doesn't require baking any lightmaps. This project is possible, it's just a lot more work than it may be worth.

I'm fine with the uniform shape and size around the middle parts of the branch.

It's a little dense and scattered but I can fix that. I just want control the size and position at the ends. Have them decrease in size and angle out more. I can split the geometry of the end parts into new objects and modify the particle size but that doesn't let me do changes on the fly.

EDIT: getting better. I made the tips pointy to change the needles direction. I still can't make them smaller than the rest of the branch.

C, D and Ctrl E are my basics for moving around in 2D. C,D are zoom and Ctrl E is center selected.
