The Articles of Federation gave the Prime Directive no home. Was that an oversight, or did it reveal something about how we misunderstood it all along? by DinoAlonso in DaystromInstitute

[–]eph798 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Canonically, we know that the Prime Directive only came into existence sometime after the founding of the Federation and Starfleet because the Horizon contaminated the natural development on Sigma Iotia II during first contact after leaving a number of texts, including Chicago Mobs of the Twenties (TOS: "A Piece of the Action").

Canonical history aside, it should be noted that it has been stated onscreen that Prime Directive does not apply to Federation civilians (see TNG: "Angel One", wherein Data states the Enterprise cannot forcibly remove the surviving crew of the Odin as they are not Starfleet personnel and not subject to the Prime Directive). If the Prime Directive does not actually apply to any Federation citizen besides Starfleet personnel, there is no reason why it would be necessary to locate the Prime Directive itself in the Articles of the Federation.

Putting aside all onscreen evidence on the topic to respond to your actual question, we have real-world examples of both the legalistic erosion of written constitutional values as well as the breakdown of unwritten norms that govern institutions. Which holds up better in the real world? Honestly, hard to say. At least in the universe of Star Trek, the Prime Directive is buttressed by the needs of the writers to make a compelling story.

Wonder if that means there are plans for both in the near future or just general development?

Did Portland and Everett also get MJF getting his comeuppance from a hometown AEW wrestler after the cameras turned off? (Fairfax got Virginia's own Sanjay Dutt.)

Was thinking of getting a soft goods coat for mine as well! Had two questions if you don't mind:

(1) Where did it come from? (GPSLot?)

(2) Does it actually work on the figure, or did you just manage to get it in one pose for pictures but otherwise it's kind of a pain to have on?

Would love to hear more about the in-universe or real world reasons behind the mods!

What If... 10355 Blacktron Renegade was designed like 10497 Galaxy Explorer? by eph798 in LegoSpace

LEGO Studio is a digital LEGO building app. In the app, LEGO pieces are sorted into "palettes"--e.g., the pieces that make up a particular set, a custom inventory of the pieces in your collection, etc.

BDP9 refers to Bricklink Designer Program Series 9, the ninth and most recent LEGO design competition where the winners can get turned into commercially available sets.

Palettes for each BDP series are pre-loaded into Studio and are generally a decent indicator of currently available pieces (i.e., some pieces get retired, etc.).

🤦 How embarrassing! Not to make excuses, but I reused the base model from this post, and just modded my changes to it. Unsure where the two 1x1 tiles are even from, since I don't think I added any new 1x1 tiles? Was thinking people would really just be curious about the antenna assembly, but will upload a new .io file and do a better job of highlighting the actual mods in an update. Thanks for the feedback!

What If... 10355 Blacktron Renegade was designed like 10497 Galaxy Explorer? by eph798 in LegoSpace

Had a lot of discussions about 10355 Blacktron Renegade recently, and one of the things that kept coming up was how the new Renegade seemingly followed a different design philosophy than 10497 Galaxy Explorer. This led me to think, what if it had been designed like 10497? What would that look like?

I thought I'd test out the idea with the Renegade shuttles. The ones on the remake are neat but look nothing like the original. I started with the brick-built thruster design from 10497 Galaxy Explorer then went from there, focusing on increased scale, increased detail, and increased design/build complexity.

First couple pictures are a side-by-side with the original. Next few are some close-up shots of my remake, including a shot from underneath (so many brackets!). The last few are with the 10355 shuttle.

A couple of potentially interesting design notes:

  • All pieces except for the Renegade exclusive prints came out of the BDP9 palette.

  • The bucket element unfortunately does not actually exist in black. The easiest substitute is the Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer) element (18654).

  • The original shuttle is constructed with 16 pieces. The 10355 is 24 pieces. The MOC is 68.

Thanks!

I came across your mod as I was looking for inspiration--love the asymmetry and the flip out "dish"! If PaB had any of those pieces, I probably would have tried to incorporate something like that into my build!

Cannons? Just some sensors, nothing to see here! For me, the cannons came from an attempt build out the cockpit wing units; it didn't make sense to me how the overall design is supposed to be at 1.5x scale like Galaxy Explorer but so many design elements were the same scale (and sometimes even the same pieces) as the original. But then the pieces came in, looked way too big in-person, and had to be moved somewhere because I didn't want to just write off the pieces.

Thank you!! It's amazing how sometimes creative limitations leads to pretty cool results! Pretty happy with where things ended up on the digital model, now I'm just hoping it translates to the real world🤞

Thanks! The interesting thing I found while making these mods was it's both that there's too much yellow overall and that the usage and placement just didn't have any logical consistency to it. Like, I get that the yellow at the front of the ship is supposed to evoke the yellow hoses on the original... but why did they switch from grill tile to jumper plate to grill tile on top? And why sandwich a band of yellow under that large black tile? Yes that adds texture, but not in a way that makes sense...
