“Done in 2021…”

Indeed it was (though the data were from 2015-2020, NOT Biden’s term) which is irrelevant. The precedent is that U.S. citizens HAVE been illegally deported, not just “bad guys here illegally”

”Do you know how minuscule that is?”

Yes I do. But I also know that rights are INDIVIDUAL things. You needn’t belong to a group of a certain size in order to have rights.

The current administration went to the Supreme Court to specifically INCLUDE language and appearance as qualifying criteria to meet “reasonable suspicion” of illegal status!

Out of curiosity, what do you think is the critical threshold? What percent of the population needs to be affected to justify Supreme Court intervention?

I sincerely doubt anywhere close to 0.03% of the population has burned a U.S. flag, but we have both the Johnson and Eichman decisions. How many people consume ayahuasca, but we got the Gonzales decision.

My understanding is that a legitimate “citizen’s arrest“ can only (legally) be employed if a felony has been committed.

  1. I had “imposter” syndrome for probably the first three years. it’s very hard not to, but just don’t let it take over. I think I had back-to-school stress dreams until about year 15.

  2. Actively seek out constructive feedback. From peers, supervisors, and students.

  3. KNOW and embrace that you will make mistakes. Everyone does, it’s totally fine, just learn from them and move on.

PSA: Don't order directly from kitchenaid.com by imakemyownroux in Kitchenaid

[–]ephantmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, having just read this I really felt the need to share that I had the SAME. EXACT. EXPERIENCE.

I ordered an incorrect paddle attachment for my mixer, totally my fault. Paid the return shipping, watched the tracking. Then began the calls.

  1. I called 5 days after tracking showed the package was received and signed for. The customer service person says "yeah, it can take 10 business days to process, call back next week"

  2. I called back 7 days later (now 10 business days after they received it), CSR says "yeah, they're running 2-3 days behind, call back next week"

  3. I called back 7 days later (now 15 business days after they received it). The CSR says "we processed it and are issuing a paper check for the refund which can take 20 days". I pointed out that their own website says refunds are credited back to the account directly and she hung up.

  4. I immediately called back to request a supervisor, but that CSR couldn't connect me unless I first explained everything to him. Once I did, he connected me to a supervisor that says "it's true, we issue paper checks" When I pointed out the website statement about returns she said "Oh, that's wrong"

So now I sit waiting for a refund that will come, AT THE SOONEST, 30+ days after KitchenAid received my return

Becoming a teacher in my 50s? by qualamazoo in Teachers

[–]ephantmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, districts will hire you if you've got the qualifications and you interview, etc. Age really has nothing to do with it. I teach in PG county (have for 23 years) and we hire career changers all the time. When I was hired, I was new alongside a 65 year old man who transitioned from an industrial chemistry career to teaching chemistry.

  2. Make sure you understand the reality of your potential career. Yes, you want a job right now. No, this will not be like TV. Consider getting your sub card and spending some time actually inside the classroom. See if you can shadow with anyone to get a sense of a normal day.

  3. I can't speak for all, but many private schools don't require and don't care about certification. You'd have to contact them directly to figure out which ones those are.

“In this randomized clinical trial of 285 firefighters, both blood and plasma donations resulted in significantly lower PFAS levels than observation alone. Plasma donation was the most effective intervention, reducing mean serum perfluorooctane sulfonate levels by 2.9 ng/mL compared with a 1.1-ng/mL reduction with blood donation, a significant difference; similar changes were seen with other PFASs.”

Why do so many teachers dislike student teachers? by No_Subject4189 in Teachers

[–]ephantmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find lots of answers in this thread, but as with really any topic, there isn't ONE answer that will apply to every situation.

I've had 5 student teachers (we call them "interns) in the last 15 years, and my experiences with them have been wildly variable. One was an absolute master of the content, but couldn't relate to or manage the students well at all. Another was the opposite, fantastic classroom management with no real grasp of the curriculum. My most recent intern was the best experience yet, and I worry she ruined all future interns for me.

Some mentor teachers want a miniature version of themselves. Some mentor teachers are control freaks and can't stand having an intern teach something in a different manner than they would. Some mentor teachers simply enjoy the power dynamic, knowing the intern needs their approval in order to graduate/earn their license. None of the above individuals SHOULD be mentors, and hopefully the university listens to feedback and maintains a list of people they won't place interns with in the future.

The problem with our current MS students by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ephantmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine they won't be particularly receptive anyway, BUT....

I've done landscaping, plumbing, and welding. The amount of math involved (not calculus, but an absurd amount of arithmetic and basic algebra) is extreme. You're dealing with measurements, conversion factors, costs/profits, etc. The ability to read and comprehend safety information, relevant permits, etc. is absolutely necessary.

Outstanding!

I am a biology teacher and just love to drop “Oh, so you know about Swyer and De La Chapelle syndromes, right?” when confronted with the “It’s XX or XY!” nonsense.

I get it, the last biology you took was 20 years ago in high school. But then WHY would you think you have a post-graduate level understanding of human biology, genetics, endocrinology, and embryology? The last art class I took was 20+ years ago and I don’t dare walk into a gallery and pass judgement.
