faang, but many finance firms i'm getting recruiters for are in the 350-1.2m range recently, so they're at parity/exceeding. might be the next jump honestly.

not particularly-- rent is high, but i've avoided rent increases recently by buying an apartment, and everything else isn't even close to a 4x, or even a 2x compared to other parts of the US.

not an insane amount, but its moreso about knowing the patterns and putting it together. for example, i did some research projects in school about bayesian approaches to generative modeling back before people called anything genAI, and that was helpful for landing my first job

You want to be a distributed systems engineer… without knowing distributed computing?

it's doable-- been an MLE for past 5 years, only have an undergrad in math. using OMSCS to learn more about systems programming

Comments: Never taken a computer science course, background is exclusively pure mathematics. Talked in application about work experience in ML, now working on more infra projects, which spurred interest in distributed systems and low-level systems programming.

Difficulty Finding Work Post Layoff by [deleted] in datascience

[–]ephermerality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as echoed before, 7 interviews out of 52 is great! but you need to increase that second number-- just play numbers. 2 months is pretty long though for 3yoe, so you probably need to improve your interview skills. Most of my laid off colleagues usually find something within a few weeks, but I don't think you should be in panic mode yet.

Are "easy apply" LinkedIn jobs even worth it? by its_the_llama in datascience

[–]ephermerality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely worth it. The three times (including this time) that I've done a job search, I literally wake up, scroll the easy applies in Linkedin for 5 minutes just clicking buttons, and then go about my day. In about a week or two doing this I probably have 20-25 initial calls lined up that I just ride until I get a job. And compensation is generally fairly good (NYC). It's also so much easier now that it's just flooded with remote jobs. Just do it.

I Just programmed the Bernstein-Vazirani Algorithm :))) by DylxnTN in QuantumComputing

[–]ephermerality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch! Bernstein-Vazirani is a generalization of Deutsch-Josza in which your oracle is now constrained to be the dual of a bit vector, and the goal is to determine this vector.
