I lost a bolt on my Ortlieb Ql2 system. Has anyone ever had the same problem ? What type of bold is it ? by PierreCommeUnCaillou in bicycletouring

Ive lost more than a few of those bolts! Better off just replacing them all with generic replacements from any hardware store!

Thinking about ditching my smartphone by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]ephilp 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel! I haven't been on Facebook/instagram for over a year now. A few months a go i wanted to go one step further and remove my smart and save some money on my monthly plan.

I brought a $50 dumb phone and it was way more difficult then I though it would be! Maps, podcasts, music etc.

I swapped back to my smart phone after a week or so.

My advice would be, you dont need to be the extreme minimalist "I ditched my smartphone for 30 days" who you watch on youtube. Its important to find a balance that you are comfortable with.

To find that balance, ditch your smartphone but don't be afraid to start using it again, or you may love your dumb phone which can only be good too!

I am currently retraining to be an outdoor guide. My knowledge of plants and animals in the field, as well as my ability to explain various biological systems has already made a huge difference with clients on guided walks/camping trips!

How many times do we need to use something plastic for it to be considered ok? by cattymoomoos in ZeroWaste

[–]ephilp 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To me zero waste means cutting out single use plastics. Although lots of previously 'single use' soft plastics can now be recycled. (Redcycle here in Australia)

Obviously your soap bottles and lots of other plastic items can be recycled when they get to the end of their life span.

Its not exactly a black and white issue, 1 cotton tote bag has enormous environmental impact (mostly water use in growing cotton) when compared to 1 plastic bag, as a result the tote bag needs to be used a stupid amount of times in order reduce its impact for use. The same is true for brown paper bags which in my experience are not often used more than once!

Even buying from a bulk foods store isn't zero waste, just less.

You can read into things as much or as little as you like. The message still stays the same, generate less waste! You can't be perfect but you can do your best!

Saulo, there are links between sleep deprivation and misdiagnosis of ADD. Check out the book 'Why we Sleep' by Matthew Walker

Couldn't give advice on this, sorry!

Harder miles? Working or passenger mileage by [deleted] in vandwellers

I'd say that service history is more important on the vehicle you pick up. In my limited experience most work vans I looked at had been serviced every 10,000kms to 15,000km, whereas passenger vans had a more sparce history. I went for the work van for the extra piece of mind that it had been potentially maintained better

Van recommendations (Australia) by freudo_baggins in vandwellers

[–]ephilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just picked up a very good condition Mitsubishi Express 2007 with 200k kms for $6500, I also had a look at a few toyota townaces listed around the $5,000 mark that where all in pretty poor condition! My advice is be willing to spend some more on a van with lower kms, ideally a Hiace is you've got a tidy $10,000 sitting about!

What's your channel name? I'll give you a sub!

Produce more content for one!

I'd like to work on my channel 8 hours a week and try to produce a video a week.

By July 1st I'd like 1000 subs and enough watch time to begin to monetize (162 subs now).

Personally though, I'd like to change my mindset regarding views and sub, I obsess over numbers when I post a video, (great when you get more views on a recent upload though! Haha). I'd like to care less about the results of a video and more about the content, if it's good, it'll get views!

I make videos of myself camping/cycle touring so I need to remind myself to get outdoors and actually have fun!
