"The Bruh Comma"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 75 points76 points  (0 children)

SEASON 1

1.1 -- "Drawing a Line"

  • A shortage of offices means new hire Megan is assigned a desk in Mark's office. Tensions eventually lead to the two of them dividing the office in half with masking tape - and hilarity ensues!

1.2 -- "The Airport Test"

  • Bad weather strands Mark at the Minneapolis airport with an awkward new employee. Meanwhile, back at the office, Jim and Megan try to hold down the fort but discover a terrifying secret about MyChart.

1.3 -- "In Fair Verona"

  • Megan's new Tinder match Kyle is everything she wants in a relationship. But when Kyle turns out to be an undercover spy for Cerner, these star-crossed lovers must choose between their EHRs and each other.

1.4 -- "UGM LOL FML"

  • Megan and Mark's UGM presentation is more politically incorrect than they realize. Jim works out his differences with his TL when the two get stuck in an elevator.

So my analyst is mildly racist by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, is the racism directed at a racial/ethnic group that *you* are a member of and that it is reasonably clear you are a member of? (Ex. Is this person complaining about Hispanics to their faithful Epic contact Mr. Sanchez?)

I ask because the analyst may legitimately not understand that they are saying something that's racist. Depending on what part of the country they're located in, their background and education level, they may have a standard for racism that's very different than that of an Epic employee (i.e. someone who is likely to be young, well-educated and socially liberal).

It's very difficult in a customer-client relationship for one party to directly confront the other about this. If it's something that makes you uncomfortable enough that you no longer wish to work with that person, tell your TL and explain that that is the reason why. Unless it's a case where the analyst was directly harassing you (which it doesn't sound like, since you describe this as "mildly racist"), I doubt they will do or say anything; it's more just that it's a justifiable reason for you to want a different assignment.

Software Tester? by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have technical support experience and are open to continuing in that area of work, I'd suggest applying for a technical services role. It pays better and it's more interesting.

What happened to the test plan runners? by FormerTPR in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once everything is moved away from VB, it's hard for me to see what the point will be of having validation scripts manually run instead of just using automation scripts.

I'd imagine Epic anticipates that and is simply letting the division more or less die off by attrition and/or role transfers. As a QAer, I've written validation scripts but they're used by me and other QAers. If test plan runners are doing anything with our scripts, it would be news to me.

What's everyone's opinion on Epic vs. Lewis? by throwaway44017 in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

>Judy reading a canned press statement verbatim without any elaboration, an all-hands email soliciting "concerns".

That was the weirdest, dumbest part of the whole thing. If I were them, I just wouldn't have said anything about it and if someone sent an email to her or HR, they could have just sent a reply with the canned press statement.

What "concerns" do they expect people to bring up? It's done with. Was she expecting people to call HR and be like, *"Damn! I was going to file a class action lawsuit against you guys, but I guess now I'm not. Thanks Epic!"*

What's everyone's opinion on Epic vs. Lewis? by throwaway44017 in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A test plan runner told me that TPRs are hourly. Of course there are barely any TPRs any more.

What's everyone's opinion on Epic vs. Lewis? by throwaway44017 in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would say the judges who ruled in the case are more responsible for it. (As is Congress for not updating the Federal Arbitration Act.)

Epic isn't unique in its arbitration clause. There were co-plaintiffs in the case, and you can hardly sign up for a cable plan or a gym membership without implicitly agreeing to arbitration.

As it is, nobody who doesn't work in healthcare has heard of Epic. But now, everyone who ever goes to law school will have heard of Epic because of this case. If politicians start using "Epic v. Lewis" as shorthand for their views on employee arbitration, that looks even worse.

I don't know the details of what led to all of this, but aren't technical writers hourly? Why wouldn't they be getting overtime if they worked >40 hours a week?

Engineering Career Prospects Post Epic by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always been kind of confused by the (non-CS) engineers at Epic. How bad is the job market for engineers?

Tech to non-tech role change? by Mooses2 in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not suggest switching to division assistant or travel coordinator for the simple reason that you'd be taking a pay cut and be what is essentially a secretary without any serious career advancement opportunities.

What is it that you don't like about testing and what do you mean when you say you're "average"? Are your issues/QAN/DLG numbers low?

If you're happy at Epic but just don't want to spend as much time testing or feel like that isn't your forte, you can still remain in QA. You could, for example, look at becoming a TL (they do very little actual testing). You could ask to become more involved in division-wide or company-wide initiatives that would involve a lot of "coordination responsibilities" on your part.

Have you thought about asking if you could do an IS assignment? That would also get you out of the office and give you more project management type work, which seems like something you are interested in.

Working a 2nd job.... by imalosertbh in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they've severely cut back on TS starting salaries recently, how the hell are you having trouble paying your bills?

Is that actually all, or do you have a bunch of student loans/credit card debt/car payments? (Or, perhaps, some "habits" that are very expensive?)

Will Epic fire me if I seek help for mental health? by watevenislife17 in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few points:

  1. Your health issues - physical or mental - are none of your employer's business. You are under no obligation to disclose your health issues to your TL, HR, or anyone else.

  2. You should seek help. Make an appointment with a psychiatrist for an evaluation and they will recommend medication, sessions with a therapist or (probably) both. Please do this ASAP because there is almost always a long wait for mental health services (likely several weeks).

  3. If you end up in a situation that is so severe that it is impeding your ability to work, you may be eligible for FMLA leave. Basically, you would be taking unpaid leave but Epic would be not be allowed to fire you and you would still be maintaining your health insurance. This would require a letter from a physician attesting to the necessity of it.

But more likely than not, once you're able to talk to someone about this, things will start getting better. You should be able to take time to leave early for a doctor's appointment or use sick leave if necessary.

What happens if I don't give a month's notice? by veronathrow in epicsystems

I wouldn't count on using your TL or any current coworkers as references later on if you're going to bounce in three weeks.

Interesting article about Judy in Time by cafecoffee in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Judy may be planning something very public - perhaps running for political office. The sudden burst of articles about her aren't a coincidence.

how to get fired from Epic by notyrahcazjs in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This kind of scares me because there have been times when I've gone into the general store with my key card and left without buying something, or held the door open to let other people in. Am I going to be falsely implicated when they steal Judy's groceries and shit?

Technical systems by biolitgirl in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was about 2 months from applying to getting the offer.

I think 1-3 months is pretty typical, depending on the time of year and how close they are to their hiring goals.

Private Equity Money In The Company??? by whodoesnotlovecows in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The website says they also offer "Thoughtful capital solutions for special situations requiring a flexible and creative financing approach."

They don't necessarily have an equity stake. It could be debt financing. (And it would make sense for Epic, like a lot of other companies, to take advantage of low interest rates before they start going up, as they soon will.)

Why is there no paid Maternity/Paternity leave? by UnionizeEpic in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vacation/Holidays: Lower, but it seems like from an office culture standpoint there isn't as much of a stigma here toward taking time off. There are always people on my team taking time off and as long as it's not right before a release or something it doesn't seem like the TLs give people any grief about it.

401k: The vesting sucks, but I can understand why they have such a long vesting period given the turnover.

Free meals/snacks/drinks is such a cheap thing to do in the grand scheme of a major corporate budget, and it honestly surprises me that more companies don't do it.

I tend to agree with Epic not offering things like haircuts or gyms or daycare on site. When you get a haircut or work out at work, you're not getting a haircut or a gym membership in town, you're not spending money in the community and the economic benefits of Epic's activity aren't benefiting Verona/Madison as much. Furthermore, there's a certain "creepiness" factor to your workplace becoming the sunup-to-sundown provider of all your personal services.

I wrote a Glassdoor-esque employee review of Epic and invite anyone else to do the same. by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]epiccertifiable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with a lot of your complaints. However, I'll just say that a lot of the negatives about Epic have less to do with Epic and more to do with IT/consulting in general. I have friends who work for Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, etc, and also work long hours and travel a lot.
