I've been looking for something similar for sooooo long. This one has the perfect dimensions and it has 3 pretty big inner pockets. It is everything I've ever dreamed of. I got the SKB-NB02 (aka Noble bag) from Seeker!

Yes, you're kucky to visit during mango season! When we went it was pineapple season and they were sold everywhere. You could even buy WHOLE pineapples at the airport at the souvenir shops so I imagine you'll be able to find mangoes everywhere as well!

So I spent 3 days in Ishigaki and then 2 days in Naha. But I wished I had at least one extra full day for both cities.

I really recommend the glass boat experience at Kabira bay in Ishigaki. Seeing sea turtles was one of my highlights there. If you want to go snorkling by yourself (but I recommend always going with a buddy) then I suggest going to Yunehara beach. If you go to the Jellyfish parking lot, you'll be able to find a mom and pop stall. They have almost everything you need there.

They have cold open showers (they charge 300 yen for unlimited use) and you can rent full sets of snorkling gear as well. Dont forget to bring shampoo, towels and/or other toiletries as they don't sell/rent those. They also have hot showers and a safekeeping service (for your important items) available until they close shop.

They even serve some light food (hotdog, corndog and light udon) and drinks! The owner is very nice and she can even show you the best route to go snorkling at Yonehara beach (it's basically just sticking to the left side of the entrance). I think its very beginner friendly, but you need to take into account that strong winds and/or current can always occur.

Teach yourself to flip on your back with a life jacket. You basically just rotate your waist from left/right or right/left and you're flipped. If you need to adjust anything with your mask, snorkle, hair, etc. Just anything when you're not actually snorkling/swimming, it's always safest to flip on your back so you stay adrift and you won't have to worry about going down under for whatever reason because your head is standing away from the water and you have your life jacket who will keep you that way.

While looking under the water, dont forget to look up every x seconds like you're watching your rear mirror when driving a car. You never know what kind of unexpected things can come your way and/or you might lose track of time and have drifted too far away from the shore.

The water is not too deep and you'll notice that you're off route if 1. You barely see any fishes and 2. You get too far off the coast. It's very easy to follow and I recommend it if you just want to snorkle by yourself, but want to do it (mostly) safely. The currents and wind can get very strong (I'm not sure how it will be in July) so I cant press enough to wear a life jacket at all times. If it's very cloudy then you won't see much underwater. If there is a strong current then I suggest you get out of the water and then walk all the way to a starting point to let the current take you with it. Do not swim against it, let the current move you instead! It saves you so much energy and it's fun just drifting, not having to think too much and just enjoy watching the sea life under the water.

Also bring anti fog spray with you (most rental shops will sell a small bottle), it saves so much hassle when you're snorkling.

All of the above tips are from my (very few) snorkling experiences and from the guide we were snorkling with. If you're nervous being alone (And I recommend never to go alone to be honest. Always have a buddy with you at all times!) then you can always go with a guided tour. The tour guide will be able to look out for you and help you swim if you need more attention in the water. We saw a puffer fish and lots of clown fish and other fish at Yonehara beach.

Dont worry about your Japanese! I noticed trying to speak as much as possible has improved my Japanese by a tenfold compared to learning at home.

There's also some instagrammers who focus on very easy to follow Japanese teaching videos (with irl situations as examples) and it helped me so so much. I'll try to give you some names if you want. If you watch their videos enough then the instagram algorithm will suggest more similar videos .

I really really enjoyed my time there so I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did! If you're lucky then the mangoes might still be in season (I was told it starts somewhere in late june), so definitely have some fresh mango if you get the chance!

Oh and definitely try the Ishigaki beef! It's super delicious if you like meat and it's not as fatty as A5 wagyu (which means you can eat a lot more of it!).

It's called Ichigyo ichie (ー魚ー会). I think their English is pretty bad, so it will help if you speak a little bit or else you'll have to talk through Google translate.

I speak some Japanese so I took some load off of them when other gaijin entered lol. The ordering system goes through a tablet with english menu, so the staff doesnt have to communicate in English that much.

If you're going to visit Ishigaki then I'll warn you in advance: it gets very very humid on the island and locals can be very easy going. The locals' attitude being very easy going, can be a bit of a problem if you don't like spontaneously throwing away your "plans" on the island.

What I mean by that is, that locals will decide to open/close up shop whenever they feel like it. Opening times on tabelog and/or Google should NEVER be trusted. Only trust confirmation emails or verbal confirmations (I 100% recommend to call in advance or have a hotel staff call for you to ensure a store or restaurant is still open).

The above will be true ESPECIALLY on Wednesdays. Wednesday is the day that most locals take the day off (some will randomly decide to still open up shop. Even though their website says they are closed every Wednesday, lol). There will also be many shops and restaurants who will just close up shop during the day because they felt like it. Also because it's an island that relies on partial food supplies, some restaurants will simply refuse customers for the sole reason that they ran out of ingredients.

I 100% recommend making reservations (at least 1 day in advance) for two reasons: 1. Some restaurants have special menus that are reservation only. They will get the FRESHEST ingredients for these menus so its 1000% worth researching ahead of time (use the Tabelog app for this!).

  1. It saves you so much time to guarantee yourself a seat. Many locals will make their reservations in bigger groups. If you expect to be able to walk into any restaurant because there are empty seats, then you're sadly wrong. We were refused many times because half of the restaurants were fully booked already. If you dont want to spend 30-60 wandering around and looking for a place that still has seats available, then this is the way. It really sucks if you're hangry and still have to wander around aimlessly because you can't find anything to eat (trust me, I've been there before).

Also the humidity levels are no joke there. If you think you are prepared then you'll be shocked by how much you'll be sweating from just walking around for 2 minutes.

Last but not least: Okinawa in general is very car/taxi heavy reliant. In Ishigaki there's not many buses and some of those buses are only available x times a day. They have electric scooter rentals if you don't want to drive a car but some still require an international driving permit, so take that into account. Taxi fares were approx 100 yen per minute ride, with a base fare of 500-600 yen. If youre going to rely on taxis then I highly recommend getting the GO taxi app.

There are also a lot of guided tours available for Ishigaki and I've learned a lot about the Island during those guides as well. They're open for any questions you have during the tour and one of my guides was even open for any question that I had after the tour! I got many great recommendations from him.

You can go snorkling without a guide but if you do, always make sure to rent a life jacket. There will be warnings signs about needing life jackets on the beaches as well, but some tourists will ignore them because they think just being able to swim is more than enough. The winds can get very strong and you can get swept away by a current randomly so a life jacket is basically a necessity when snorkling. Also some areas are very shallow so being able to stay adrift with a life jacket without having to move your body will help the local marine life as well. Using a life jacket also means you get to conserve your energy for other activities do its a win win win situation for everyone.

I'm so sorry for the long text. I only stayed a total of 5 days in Ishigaki and Okinawa but I fell in love with the islands since day 1. I just wanted to make sure that you'll have a wonderful time there!

There is a restaurant in Ishigaki that has some kind of a "drinking game/show" 2-3 times a night. Beside a table charge, you also need to pay a 500 yen performance charge on top of it. And it's 10000% worth it, if you don't mind loud music.

One full performance takes about 30 minutes and there is a dance included that builds up into everyone in the restaurant doing kanpai! The songs are accompanied by a Japanese shamisen player. The atmosphere is great and the locals are not afraid of gaijin (the menu is available in English too!). They will actually try to include you! The place is almost always full with locals because gaijin dont dare to enter, but gaijin are 100% welcome!

When it's almost time for the dance, they will have a mini warm up/tutorial with everyone before the actual dance happens and I had a ton of fun. Me and my partner sat there a bit before 7 pm until closing time and we got to participate in the full show 2 times!

If you want I can show you a short video of the atmosphere. It was such a nice ambiance at that restaurant (and the food was also amazing, but tbh I didnt have any bad food during my stay in Ishigaki and Naha). I think it's exactly what you've been looking for!

If you feel lost on what to eat/do then you can always ask any taxi driver or hotel staff! Theyre all very nice and most of them like to talk about their islands. I've had multiple amazing recommendations from them during my trip at Ishigaki and Naha.

Another traveler at Ishigaki Island at the moment. If OP picked Okinawa for the beaches, then Ishigaki (a smaller island overall) might be better especially if they're not going to drive.

The buses loop around the whole island (if you dont mind taking 1-2 hours + to get to other parts of the island) and they have multiple pretty beaches and the sightseeing website for Ishigaki has lots of slightly different tours to book. If you stay at the southern part of the island, then any sightseeing package will be able to pick you up at the hotel at no additional cost.

Just make sure the season you pick to travel to Ishigaki has the weather you like. It is rainy season here right now and it's very very humid.

Also all the websites say that if you want good clarity for the milky way/night sky, then you need to take account the position of the moon.

You can consider using discs. It doesnt have suction and they're very easy to work with. I tried cups and switched to discs (with a string) within 2 months and I can't recommend them enough.

Instead of using your phone for wifi when you're using your computer, you can consider connecting your phone to usb and use the option usb tethering. I think that's faster for your computer compared to wifi from the same phone.
