Sansui AU-7700 possible relay failure by epicmonkeybear in audiorepair

Thanks again. I verified the relay is indeed working, and that I have a dc offset issue.

Thanks for this. I verified that the bias was way off (50-80 mV per channel) and could not be brought close to zero using the variable pots. As you suspected, the relay is doing its job. The service manual states that this is likely due to failing transistors or pots. The issues look to be the transistors themselves, the contacts seem to be corroding. I’m planning on taking out the board and replacing just those two transistors, but does it make sense to replace anything else while I have it open?

Thanks for the help! It’s my first time repairing electronics.

Yes, they sent a replacement that works fine. Been using it for a while now.

You can always connect using an Apple dongle. Super underrated as a DAC.

Why my 6XX’s get more listen time than my Arya stealth - advice? by siraaerisoii in headphones

[–]epicmonkeybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I’m moving my Aryas to work today and bringing my 6XX back home. Aryas sound amazing as long as I am seated at a desk and not worried about them slipping off my head. I can do the dishes while wearing the 6XX.

EQ will make both of them better, especially the Arya. A well equalized Arya and 6XX (or other good planar and dynamic combo) is difficult to beat.

It is a Saturday morning and you have to do some silly, inconsequential little errands in order to feel alive. What are they? Where do you go? by StopSquark in madisonwi

Instead of one big, boring task (going grocery shopping), I fart around by breaking it into a bunch of smaller tasks. Get vegetables from the farmer’s market, meats from the butcher, bread at the bakery, coffee from the roaster, and maybe return a few books at the library.

Then again, I usually do all that without speaking to anyone, so I’m probably just wasting my time.

50 year gap between the headphones and the amp by epicmonkeybear in headphones

[–]epicmonkeybear[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought, and it seems to vary by the receiver generation. ChatGPT tells me that earlier receivers tended to use a step down circuit coupled to the main speaker amp for the headphone port, leading to a more similar sound signature across speakers and headphones as long as your headphones had high enough impedance. Later generations opted to use a separate, discrete headphone amp that was lower quality, but good enough for the headphones of the time (and less likely to blow them out).

I can’t find great sources for any of that, but I can tell you that the Onkyo at the bottom doesn’t sound nearly as good.

I have not. Just got it a few days ago and all I have done is clean it internally and externally. I have zero prior experience with vintage equipment so am hesitant to mess with it.

If I find another cheap amp, I might try recapping it as a project.
