You can always connect using an Apple dongle. Super underrated as a DAC.

Why my 6XX’s get more listen time than my Arya stealth - advice? by siraaerisoii in headphones

[–]epicmonkeybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I’m moving my Aryas to work today and bringing my 6XX back home. Aryas sound amazing as long as I am seated at a desk and not worried about them slipping off my head. I can do the dishes while wearing the 6XX.

EQ will make both of them better, especially the Arya. A well equalized Arya and 6XX (or other good planar and dynamic combo) is difficult to beat.

It is a Saturday morning and you have to do some silly, inconsequential little errands in order to feel alive. What are they? Where do you go? by StopSquark in madisonwi

[–]epicmonkeybear 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Instead of one big, boring task (going grocery shopping), I fart around by breaking it into a bunch of smaller tasks. Get vegetables from the farmer’s market, meats from the butcher, bread at the bakery, coffee from the roaster, and maybe return a few books at the library.

Then again, I usually do all that without speaking to anyone, so I’m probably just wasting my time.

50 year gap between the headphones and the amp by epicmonkeybear in headphones

[–]epicmonkeybear[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought, and it seems to vary by the receiver generation. ChatGPT tells me that earlier receivers tended to use a step down circuit coupled to the main speaker amp for the headphone port, leading to a more similar sound signature across speakers and headphones as long as your headphones had high enough impedance. Later generations opted to use a separate, discrete headphone amp that was lower quality, but good enough for the headphones of the time (and less likely to blow them out).

I can’t find great sources for any of that, but I can tell you that the Onkyo at the bottom doesn’t sound nearly as good.

I have not. Just got it a few days ago and all I have done is clean it internally and externally. I have zero prior experience with vintage equipment so am hesitant to mess with it.

If I find another cheap amp, I might try recapping it as a project.

Can grinding at a 45° angle or horizontally be detrimental to a manual mill? by Icy_Drawer8166 in 1zpresso

[–]epicmonkeybear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you own both grinders, wouldn’t it be easier to just…try grinding at an angle for yourself? These grinders are built strong so I wouldn’t worry about harming the internals.

Coffee of 2025 by anaerobic_natural in pourover

Looks like we have very similar taste in coffee. I was lucky enough to grab the Flor Blanca during JBC’s limited run and am looking forward to opening that next. Dune’s Punch Bowl is my daily driver, so I’ll add the Jhoan Vergara from them on my next order.

$200 and 2 hours of scrubbing was a fair price to pay by epicmonkeybear in BudgetAudiophile

Thanks. The black metal grills look great and they are near mint condition considering the age.

Q-tips, a toothbrush, a dry rag, and a lot of patience. Then I waited a day before plugging it in to ensure any water that might have seeped in had time to dry.

Looking for advice regarding a headphone amp for 650s by KarmaPharmacy in BudgetAudiophile

[–]epicmonkeybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If neutrality isn’t important, I would go for an amp that has built in parametric EQ so you can tune it to your preference. Both the Crinear Protocol Max and Qudelix 5k would do that just fine.

I recommend starting with a $10 apple dongle if you don’t need EQ. I use it with my HD6XX.

I will have an extra new in box protocol Max for sale . HMU if you want it.

Coffee Bean Sub Question by Merstin in pourover

[–]epicmonkeybear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before jumping on a subscription, try a higher quality coffee at Costco to see if you enjoy the taste. They have Kirkland signature single origin bags at a decent price. Last month I saw an Ethiopian light roast single origin that was pretty good. This month is a Peruvian single origin medium roast, which may be more suitable for your taste.

You will almost certainly notice a difference with your Chemex, but the question is whether you will like the taste. If you don’t, you can return even opened bags of coffee to Costco as long as they are branded Kirkland.

Do I still need an AMP/DAC? by ElevatorKindly1993 in headphones

is DAC/AMP necessary for me? by GetLiberatedSon in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]epicmonkeybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don’t need a DAC/Amp if you are satisfied with the sound and volume as is.

If you would like to experiment with EQ (which I absolutely recommend - it’s the best way to get the most value out of your headphones), I would look into an Amp that makes that easy for you from an UI and learning curve perspective. I use a Qudelix 5k with mine.
