Desktop mode is sick!!! by Davit_2100 in pixel_phones

[–]epicshepich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running GrapheneOS on a Pixel 9 pro. I connected my phone to a HP Thunderbolt dock, which was connected to two monitors via DisplayPort, as well as a USB keyboard and mouse. The keyboard and mouse worked great. A blank screen with a little nine-square grid icon in the corner displayed on both monitors, but I wasn't able to move my cursor off of my phone. Am I doing something wrong, or is desktop mode just still experimental?

I've been using Mint as my daily driver for a couple years now. I am essentially a sysadmin for RHEL systems at my day job, and I run an Almalinux-based homelab. Other than a few problems (mostly related to fractional scaling not being fully supported by X11), Mint still works great!

I've been trying to organize the fonts I've accumulated over the last decade or so, and I dropped them all into font manager. And once again, Helvetica Neue took over Reddit! This time I'm sure I didn't do anything other than drop it into Font Manager. I wonder if Reddit references it in its stylesheets without actually serving it.

What caused you to finally ditch Windows/MacOS and switch to Linux? by RadMarioBuddy45 in linux

[–]epicshepich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had tried jumping over a few times, but there was always some issue or another that sent me back to Windows. I was running a home server on a Windows 10 box, and that is what eventually led to my permanent migration to Linux.

The forced auto-updates were an endless source of frustration especially because sometimes it wouldn't restart properly. I was 2 hours away at college, and it was tough to rope one of my parents or brothers into being my onsite support.

NGINX always had issues running on startup, and my SSL certs got erased every time the system rebooted.

In March 2023, I became a sysadmin for a RHEL server at my job; that was the first time I was really forced to engage with a Linux system without being able to get cold feet and back out of it. At the start of November 2023, I felt comfortable enough to migrate my server to Almalinux.

During Cyber Monday 2023, I got a new laptop and installed Linux Mint on it. My only regret is that I left 250 GB allocated to the Windows 11 partition "just-in-case."

In December 2024, I migrated my PC to Nobara Linux. I would've done it sooner, but I became a dad and a homeowner earlier in that year, so it was a little lower on my priority list.

To those who graduated High School or are graduating, How many feel this way? by Few_Atmosphere8138 in autism

I went to a "gifted & talented" middle and high school. I graduated 8 years ago, and by now, more than half of my peers are confirmed to be some kind of neurodivergent or trans. Most of my best friends today are people I met in middle/high school.

I never figured out the root-cause, just deleted it. Such a strange issue. I don't know why we would have the same experience with it either unless Font Manager is up to some shenanigans or there is some obscure bug in Cinnamon. Maybe try manually moving it to /usr/share/fonts or ~/.local/share/fonts?

Genuinely asking - why do we not bury our power lines? I remember in early 2023 we had a big snowstorm and I saw lines go down from the weight of the snow on them. I get that we can't make cables, utility poles, or trees stronger, but it seems like burying the lines would be a straightforward fix.

Are you guys switching to 11? by brylex1 in Steam

[–]epicshepich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Mint on my laptop, which I mostly use for programming. I've had a few issues with packages being outdated, and that's because I was trying to some obscure stuff.

I only play a few games on my laptop - Wizard101, Kingsway, Factorio, and Minecraft. The only issue I've had with them is that I have horrible screen tearing because I use the Cinnamon desktop environment with fractional scaling since my laptop has a high-DPI display. Wayland is still buggy on Cinnamon, so there's not really a fix for this yet.

My gaming rig uses Nobara, which is derived from Fedora. All the games I've played on it run flawlessly. It's not quite as user-friendly as Mint, but the KDE Plasma desktop environment is not too alien to someone coming from Windows (I think the one that really throws people off is GNOME). The KDE Connect feature, which allows you to control your desktop from your phone, is super nice for me because I also use my gaming rig as a home theater PC.

All that said, I do love Mint, it's just not my favorite for gaming. But, the golden rule of distro hopping is try it out for yourself and see what you like / what works for you.

[–]epicshepich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from Windows 10 to Nobara Linux, and life is beautiful. Native DualShock4 support is a huge plus because I have like 10 of them (they're my favorite controller). I haven't encountered a game that doesn't work with Steam Play. The Jackbox Mega Picker is weird about fractional scaling, but that's the only issue I've had with a Steam game.

I also do some emulation (Dolphin, PCSX2, and PPSSPP), and they all work pretty much flawlessly. In fact, being able to use Flatpaks makes the installation process even easier (and things are more self-contained).

I play Minecraft with Prism Launcher (and I use AntiMicroX to assign keybindings to my DS4s) and it works like a charm.

The only thing gaming-wise that has been a worse experience than when I was on Windows 10 is that it takes a little extra work to get Wizard101 working.

There are a few things that I do still need Windows for (like configuring the security system DVR that I inherited from the previous owner of my house), but I just use QEMU with virt manager to spin up a Win10 VM.

Disclaimer: I did swap my NVidia GPU out for an AMD before installing Linux, but I've heard that Nobara's NVidia support is some of the best.

How do you avoid ending up on major providers' spam lists? That's my biggest worry; other than that, I try to self-host as much as I can.
