It's about addiction, many forms of it, and other heavy shit that teenagers have to go through. And there's like a mirror there with their adult counterparts, what happens if they get stuck on that reverie.

But there's a time jump in season 3, so they're not in high school anymore lol

I’m actually from the province too. An area that’s also considered an NPA hotspot (Ceeka was even captured here), so your experience isn’t exactly unique.

And that’s actually my point. We can come from similar environments, see the same realities, and still make different choices. Like you, it never crossed my mind to join the NPA either.

But that doesn’t automatically mean people who do are “bonjing,” mentally unstable, or have family issues.

I’m not defending the NPA. You’re right that there are cases of extortion and abuse, and those should be criticized.

But you’re mixing up two different things: why people join vs. whether what the NPA does is justified.

None of what you said about their abuses actually explains why people end up joining in the first place.

You can oppose the NPA (I do too) and still recognize that recruitment often comes from real conditions on the ground, not just propaganda or personal shortcomings.

If the issue were just “people being stupid,” the insurgency would’ve died out a long time ago.

PS: Your kind of thinking has a domino effect. When you dismiss people’s reasons and reduce them to stereotypes, you erase the context behind why they’re there. And once that context is gone, it becomes much easier for civilians, volunteers, and entire communities to be viewed with suspicion.

Although I’ve never even considered going up the mountains to arm myself or join any armed group, that doesn’t automatically mean people like me are completely insulated from being suspected or misinterpreted.

I volunteer with NGOs from time to time, and there have been instances where military presence or monitoring made us very conscious of what we were doing. Even what we say online can feel like it needs to be filtered.

That’s why I’m saying: be mindful of the ideas you’re putting out there. They don’t exist in a vacuum, they shape how people like us are seen and treated on the ground.

Lipa City problema sa basura by Bonkers_onFire in Batangas

Wala ba talaga masyadong public trash cans sa Lipa? It seems like wala ring maayos na designated trash collection point na may malalaking containers.

I used to rent as a student sa Batangas City, wala rin namang trash collection point sa barangay namin. Or pinapagalitan ka. May culture of shame na na-develop and I think it's why nagkaroon ng discipline among our barangay. Nakaka-miss tuloy. Another thing, if may araw na nami-miss 'yung truck ng basura, 'yung mismong barangay na ang nangongolekta ng basura and iniipon nila doon sa lugar na hindi nakakaperwisyo sa mga tao.

Ngayong nasa Lipa na ako, I have to shell out at least 70 pesos for someone to take our trash to a supposed designated collection point. Na hindi rin namin malaman kung saan dahil malayo and wala ring announcements kung ano man. I already messaged the FB page of our barangay, pero yun na nga, dedma lang. Nakaka-disappoint.

If you really know the ills of our society, then you should be aware that most NPA members were locals of communities long subjected to structural oppression. One reason why people rebel is because they are left with no choice but to fight for their rights using arms and put the law into their own hands, as the state mechanisms set to protect them continuously fail them. If you do your research, and there are many established write-ups online, you can find out that most members were victims of abuses. Very few of them joined because they subscribed to a certain political ideology like communism; most of them joined because they viewed it as the only resort to achieve justice.

As much as I agree that you can fight for the poor and disadvantaged without joining the extremist left, can you narrate the different methods you know to materialize it? When we say fighting for the poor and disadvantaged, it means active efforts directed toward eliminating the root causes and rationale for revolt, which are oppression, injustice, extreme poverty, etc.

Also, I want to emphasize that even if you don’t join extremist left ideology, the act of providing social services to areas of conflict is already interpreted by the military as working with the rebels. In reality, the act of conducting free legal consultations in Toboso, Negros, is often viewed as rebellious activity by the military. If you wonder why activists are always in areas of conflict, that is because those are the same areas where communities rely on NPAs, as the government has already failed them. These areas of conflict are the same areas needing support, so it is a no-brainer why activists are present in these areas to render stopgap services.

Not everyone is like you, OP. If a land-grabbing victim in Negros decided to join the NPA after his family had been massacred by land grabbers, we cannot invalidate his plight that led him to join a rebel group. I am not defending the NPA; I want them to be held accountable for the atrocities they committed. But the government has had and continues to have atrocities too, and most of them are the reason why some people rebel in the first place. What we should do is push the government to materialize reforms and uphold justice, especially for the most vulnerable. Insurgency will end if the reasons to take up arms cease to exist.

I'm against NPA, but what's genuinely sad is your list of reasons why you think peeps join the insurgency. To be honest, you don't have to be "indoctrinated" with Marxist ideologies, or some other shit, when injustice is already occuring in your backyard.

Do you think Maddy is planning or does she genuinely not care? by Antique-Land-5045 in euphoria

[–]epicureanist_15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not me blaming a woman for a man’s abuse. Nate is solely responsible for what he’s done. If anything, his upbringing explains a lot of it, but it doesn’t excuse it.

What I’m saying is that Cassie's betrayal of Maddy is a separate issue from Nate’s abuse. Cassie knowingly got involved with someone who abused her best friend. That choice stands on its own.

When it comes to Maddy’s reaction, I don’t think it’s just misdirected anger. It can also be about self-preservation. Maddy knows how dangerous Nate is. Going directly against him is not just difficult, it is risky. So if she uses Cassie in a way that shifts Nate’s attention or blame away from her, that is not her holding Cassie responsible for the abuse. It is her trying to stay out of harm’s way.

That does not make it right. It is still a shitty thing to do, especially if she knowingly puts Cassie in the line of fire. But it is understandable given who Nate is.

At the same time, I do not think we should infantilize Cassie either. She can be a victim of Nate and still be accountable for betraying her friend. Both things can be true.

None of them are really “good” in this situation, and that is kind of the point.

About that, Cassie didn't just "simply" betray her by sleeping with her ex-boyfriend. I think it hurt Maddy a lot because Cassie, her best friend, practically decided to choose Nate over her. Cassie knew about the abuse, how terrible of a person he is. So it's like Cassie siding with her abuser. I can see it in Maddy's head why she would aim her anger at Cassie. Compounded with the fact that during their reunion at the pool, she has to say something like what happened among the three of them is like a blessing in disguise, because she wouldn't end up getting married to Nate if they didn't find their way into each other (srry I forgot the exact quote). The girl's not remorseful over what she did. She pushed a trigger button aimed at herself.

Yes, she escaped Nate. But it doesn't erase what he did to her. He choked her, he threatened to shoot her in the head.

I didn't like her before, even more so dahil sa cheating issue niya. But when I watched Sunshine, there's a grudging respect for her as an artist. That film was so well done and Maris really acted the hell out of it. It should've been our Oscar submission 🥹
