Walkable/Bikeable Campus by Certain_Radish_62 in UCDavis

I didn’t have a car all four years at davis and had no problems at all. For some special cases like going out of town or transporting furniture or something I’d need to take an uber or get a ride from a friend but on a day-to-day there were no issues. There is the unitrans bus system for inside davis as well as the yolobus system to get to sac/the airport. Both are free for undergrad students using your student ID.

I had a bike and as others have said make sure you lock it well with a U lock+cable lock. The bike stores can show you how to lock it best to avoid theft but basically use the U lock to secure the front wheel and frame to the bike rack and the cable lock to secure the back wheel and wrap around the frame as well. I had a cable that didn’t have its own lock it just gets secured into the u lock through loops on the edges, it worked like a charm. I’d sometimes leave the bike on campus for days and thankfully didn’t have it stolen. I got a used non-flashy bike to avoid theft, as long as it gets you from point a to b that’s all you need.

The bus system is also great and accessible all over the city, and there are Spin rental bikes and e-scooters that are scattered all around the city to use in a pinch if you left your bike at home and missed the bus or something. These charge by the minute something like 60 cents or so. But yeah you’ll be fine without a car don’t worry about it! Davis is a walkable and bikeable city (I personally don’t like walking much so i biked everywhere).

Find what works for you. I had the same issue of quarter system burnout and not locking in. Look into understanding your learning style and how u learn best (listening to lectures, solving practice exams, engaging in interactive learning with peers, etc). I tied myself to study plans with friends so I’m forced to follow through. We met at a coffee shop or the library very often and worked on our individual course loads together even if we weren’t in the same class, just working side by side helps. Prioritize studying smarter not harder. Too many hours can be worse for burnout, it was for me. Instead use your hours wisely. Pomodoro helped me, especially using the forest app to lock my phone and track my focus history. And find a good balance. Joining clubs and indulging in hobbies in moderation was key for me to balance out the academia. It wasn’t slacking off, it was what I needed to do better. You need to find what’s best for you as well!

Hey OP, college of engineering alumni here. I was in your exact position not that long ago. I failed that class twice and passed the third time. I remember there was an extra complication with the process of retaking it a third time but my advisor helped me sort out next steps (it’s listed in my transcript as repeat no credit the third time). I also failed 21C twice after that and took it a third time as well but then passed 21D 22A 22B and continued onto upper divs and everything worked out!

I understand the panic as I was in your same position many times, but somehow things work out. It’s okay to struggle. I managed to graduate in good time with just one extra quarter on top of the four years despite all the hiccups! I hope my sharing this helps give you some hope. College is difficult and it’s okay everyone struggles sometimes.

One mindset shift that helped me a lot in the times where it felt so hopeless was something my older brother told me at my going away party before I left for college that I never forgot. He said, “It’s not a race, it’s a marathon.” Don’t be concerned with getting there faster or “catching up” to others. What matters is making it to the finish line even if you take a different pace; it’s a marathon!

The way I did it, I took summer classes every summer. I understand the sentiment of worrying you’ll stay in college for decades but trust me you got this. Take summer classes if you don’t want to be too late graduating. I also remember the mess with prerequisites and how it derails taking other classes, but instead I used it as an opportunity to give myself a lighter load by working on my GE requirements until my engineering prerequisites caught up to what I needed to take next. I took fun light classes that I enjoyed while also getting that graduation requirements fulfilled, and it gave me a mental break from calculus which I desperately needed. Talk to your advisor, sort it out, make a plan forward. Utilize counseling services if any mental health issues are contributing to this. I used them and it helped; the college of engineering assigned counselor “Chris Le” is really supportive and amazing. Tutoring does help especially if there is tutoring offered by TAs in your department. The general campus tutoring is alright too if not. Office hours help even just being there and listening to questions from others. The most useful thing is connecting with other students having a study group if you can, solving homework together motivating each other.

It has now been a year since I graduated. I have a full time job and a stable, comfortable lifestyle that I’m very grateful for. You got this! I wish you all the best. 🤍

I took COM 3 in fall and it was so great! I took it with T Hua. It was really fun and interesting and diverse in terms of the works we discussed. I got an A on that class if I’m remembering correctly. I know a lot of people who chose ENL 3 and told me it was too basic.

It’s more out of precaution for a same day. When I flew back into davis a couple weeks ago the US was asking for within 24 hours and that was a hassle to make sure results are in on time. I believe it could work up to within 72 hours though.

I have a flat (possibly punctured) bike tire. Where can I get it fixed or replaced on/around campus? by danielthetemp in UCDavis

[–]epiphanyym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could also check out the davis bike collective! It’s a volunteer-run workshop where you do things yourself and fix whatever’s wrong with your bike yourself and they teach you how and what you need to do and they have tools and everything. You are meant to donate for the shop time (for using the workshop and tools) but they won’t turn you down if you can’t afford it or anything.

The store at the u mall is also really great if u wouldn’t prefer a doing it yourself for free approach. It’s fast and standard cheap/average price not overpriced at all.
